Gov. Christie held his first cabinet meeting today, with more than a dozen department heads and top aides around a table and a handful of reporters and photographers hovering overhead.
Christie used the start of the meeting, the portion open to the media, to urge teamwork and transparency. He then ordered the press out of the room so he and his staff could get to the meat of their discussions.
"No one at this table has a monopoly on good ideas," Christie told his team. He said he expected cabinet members to contribute to discussions about areas that fall both within and outside of their immediate responsibilities.
Christie sat at the center of one long side of the table with Lt. Gov. Guadagno across from him, chief-of-staff Richard Bagger on the left side of the gathering and chief counsel Jeff Chiesa to the right. The meeting was held while much of the state's political and lobbying establishment was on board the Chamber of Commerce's annual train ride to Washington, a scene of much connection building and deal making.
Christie also said he expected transparency with the front office and the public.
"Folks in this state have a right to know what we’re doing in their name everyday," Christie said.
The media was invited into the room while Christie spoke to his cabinet. At the end of his seven-and-half-minute address, Christie said it was time to work.
"We have some work – but the work we have to do is not going to be with all of you," he told reporters, who were ushered outside, the twin doors to the meeting room closed behind them.
