With only the competition left, Battle of the Burbs judges see final acts

Here's another update for you: The Battle of the Burbs competition is now going to be on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. It's still at MilkBoy in Ardmore.

Here's an update for you: The audition judges released the eight-act list for the Feb. 4 competition: Two Plain Double Hams, The Bad Tequila Experience, Christina Brennan, Writer's Block, Inside the Velvet, Max Gottlieb, Neon Gray and Poor Fred Noonan. With high school performers wearing Pink Floyd t-shirts and Red Hot Chili Pepper Yamakahs, the final Battle of the Burbs audition at MilkBoy in Ardmore filled the coffeehouse with old and new musical inspiration.

Ten acts competed for the final spots. From Lower Merion High School junior Max Gottlieb's rendition of Ben King's "Stand By Me" to ensemble band Poor Fred Noonan's electrifying version of "In The Jungle" from the Disney classic "The Lion King," the audition judges had some tough calls to make.

The Battle of the Burbs competition will come to an end Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. Eight bands will compete for the top prize: Five hours of recording time at MilkBoy's studios and the chance to release a single using Lower Merion and Harriton high schools' newly-formed ATR records. The second prize winner will nab two hours of recording studio time, and Harcum Music School will offer a month of free guitar lessons to the third prize musicians.

Tickets are $5 at the door, and some proceeds will go to Girls Rock Philly, a nonprofit organization putting music in young female's lives. The judges panel – which will differ from the audtion judges – will include Philadelphia rapper Schoolly D, MilkBoy cofounder Jamie Lokoff and musician and recording executive Pete Anderson.
