When asked what they had for breakfast, one student replied, Sour Cream Lays. Another said, Ruffles and a “bar” from her teacher, and another, nothing. We have work to do and a message to send with our breakfast lesson! After discussing “My Plate” and the fact that 3 of the 5 food groups should be eaten for breakfast, I asked them to write in their journals what they envisioned a healthy breakfast to be, that they would eat. Isjeer Lowery wrote: yogurt, fruit and granola (excellent!), Janiya Hale wrote: apples, milk and muffin (not bad). We discussed how the scrambled eggs took no time to make and the cake could be made on Sunday and enjoyed all week...grab and go, with a piece of fruit and chunk of cheese or yogurt. No excuses to skip breakfast. Let’s hope they don’t from now on!
