The Eagles drafted Victor Abiamiri in the second round of the 2007 draft. (David Maialetti / Staff Photographer)

Think way back to early September and Week 1 of the NFL season.

Do you remember who was in the starting lineup at left defensive end opposite Trent Cole?

It was Victor Abiamiri. The third-year defensive lineman actually recovered a fumble and took it to the end zone for a touchdown.

For one game, at least, it looked like Abiamiri was ready to take an important step in his development

But looking back months later, it's safe to say that was probably the high point of his season.

In two early-season losses to the Saints and Raiders, Abiamiri struggled against the run, as both those teams effectively attacked his side.

He then missed three games to injury. And when Abiamiri returned, his role became more defined: Enter the game in passing situations as part of the defensive line rotation and get after the quarterback. He often lined up inside with Darren Howard, as the two replaced Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley. But Abiamiri had trouble getting pressure up the middle, something the Birds struggled with all season.

Part of that was due to ineffective line play. And part of it was ineffective blitzing.

Looking back at my game-by-game notes, Abiamiri showed flashes, particularly against the Bears and the Redskins. But overall, it was not the type of breakout season the Eagles probably were looking for when they broke camp at Lehigh.

The Eagles need to address their pass rush in the offseason. It will be interesting to see if Abiamiri is once again just a member of the rotation, or something more.

Stats: Victor Abiamiri

Your take:

Stay (60.2%)
Go (39.8%)

…hmmm, how can I thoroughly insult this guy’s playing abilities, while being funny at the same time? (ah, to be a fan)

He's a spare part, a 3rd stringer. A dime a dozen. Sign Peppers, and we don't need so many subpar spare parts.

How many high draft picks have been wasted on players of his ilk since AR has arrived on the scene? 10 years of multiple high picks on O and D lineman and the result is that 2 of the 3 most pressing needs on the team are...yep...the O and D lines. Nice job Andy.

I must agree...I am glad the front office stepped in hiring someone to assist with the draft....We need to sign Kampman or Peppers, and draft and ILB as well....The safety position is stacked and can wait at least until the 2nd....If we can get pressure on the quarterback, from peppers and kampman, and sure up the LB spots, we should be fine...But safeties are a dime a dozen. (in this draft)

Tpizza--your post says it all. Eagles front office been less than successful at drafting DEs. Eagles have chosen to let other producing D-line depart over $$. I have ot wonder if firing of Eagles strength coach plays into the relatively 'weak' Eagles D-line play.

LIke many other Birds fans, I had very high hopes for this guy. Not too undersized, good size/speed combo, and we're still waiting. I, on the whole, agree with tpizza, and I also give credit to Dragoon6 for a good line.

The Eagles should try and use their first round pick to get Brandon Graham DE from Michigan. I was impressed by him during the season, and he was dominant in the Senior Bowl. He might be there when they draft, but is moving up most draft boards. He has a high motor, something sorely lacking on the D line with the exception of Trent Cole. Abiamiri has potential as a run stuff specialist, but has to shed blocks better this year and take a step forward.
