Will Reggie Brown want out?

Will Reggie Brown have a place with the Eagles in 2009? (AP / File photo)

Reggie Brown is happy to be in Philadelphia -- for now.

The Eagles wide receiver said he's out to prove himself after a disappointing 2008 season.

But if he feels he should be on the field, and the coaching staff thinks differently, well, there could be some problems.

"I’m just gonna make the best out of what I have right now," Brown said during an interview on Comcast SportsNet. "I don’t think I’m gonna force the issue too much unless I have to. Unless things start to decline to me not playing at all when I know I should be and everyone know I should be. Then I might push the issue a little bit, but right now I’m just trying to focus on what I have to do to become a better receiver."

Brown caught 18 balls for 252 yards and one touchdown last season, all career lows. The Eagles obviously didn't think he could make much of a contribution, as they deactivated him for the NFC championship game against the Cardinals.

"For me personally, it was a very disappointing year," Brown said. "I wasn’t able to get out there and help the team to victories like I wanted to. There was a little bit of uncertainty there, how I fit in the offense, but that’s something I try to leave in the past. I really didn’t want to dwell on it and have it affect my performance."

The Eagles, of course, drafted Jeremy Maclin in the first round of last month's draft. They also dealt veteran Greg Lewis to the Patriots.

If you look at the team's completely unofficial depth chart, which is put together by the Web guys, Brown is listed as a second-stringer behind DeSean Jackson.

Brown said his approach is to work hard, improve and play well in practice so that the coaches will have no choice but to get him on the field.

"I’m gonna go out there and prove myself, and I feel like no matter who's out there, I’m gonna go out there and do my thing and they can’t ignore it," he said. "You can’t ignore someone out there making plays everyday against some of the best corners in the league."

The Eagles' coaching staff and front office have backed Brown all offseason.

Here's what Andy Reid told the Inquirer's Bob Brookover back in March:

"He's got a lot of good football ahead of him. It's not that Reggie can't play. He's got to come in and play like the rest of them do. There's competition there. If somebody snoozes, then they're not going to be the one playing, whoever it is."

** Brookover and the Daily News' Les Bowen write about Jim Johnson's leave of absence.

** Daily News columnist Sam Donnellon says Johnson always makes those around him feel comfortable.

** The Inquirer's Bob Ford wonders how Shawn Andrews will react to playing right tackle.

I think the competition across all positions will make this team better overall. Brown has been a bust so far and I think with the young guys in he has no choice but to work harder to prove himself. If he does then good for him and the team. If not then good ridance!

Being number 6 on the Eagles wide receiver depth chart is nothing to brag about. You wouldn't want to be the sixth smartest man in Mississippi or the sixth prettiest woman in Arkansas! Reggie has to step way up or way out.

Reggie Brown is a good receiver in the prime of his career. I say it doesn't hurt to have as many good players on the team as you can. Playing time is at a premium with all the young talent here but I believe Brown has a role and should stay.

It's about time-get him out of here--he was supposed to be the #1 receiver and every receiver who as came here was better than him-I will admitt he does make some catches every now and then but there is no seperation between him and the defensive player--just dont have it--just like G lewis--SEE YA

Here are 4 players the Eagles will leave training camp without them being on the roster either by trade or cut. The Brown Clowns, Reggie and Sheldon, Booker and Justice. They won't be missed either.

Sorry soliteryman, Brown should be further along in his career rather than regressing to #6 on the list. Doubt he'll make the team but if you are correct that only makes the eagles stronger. As it is now another bust of a WR drafted by Reid.

Jackson is the 1, Curtis the 2 or 3, depending if the line him up in the slot,Maclin will be whatever Curtis isn't, Avant is the chain mover, Baskett is the up top loft guy. Sorry Reggie..

5, should have read 10 years and of course I wrote that tongue in cheek. Andy Reid is a fine coach, the best we ever had apologies to Vermeil. He has made mistakes, he has drafted some real clunkers, been out coached at times and is ultimately responsible for everything. I am glad that he came to Philly. He built this team and deserves the chance to take it all the way. The same arguments apply to DM. He isn't the best in the league, has made mistakes and now at least has a modicum of help albeit VERY young. He also deserves the chance to win after what he has been through. Both give us our best chance to win the SB so I'll live or die with them both. Of course Shanahan....Hmmm.

5, you are totally correct about that. Let's look at what he has done while in Philly. Year years, ZERO SB championships. That's more than enough time to get the job done. He has to go. He takes a QB in his first draft the has the foresight to surround him with all star caliber offensive talent like LJ, FredEx,Pinkston,Thrash, Lewis, Hunt and SOOOOOO many more studs I can't count them. Then as a running game he depends a guy that was too small in college. He gets out coached in 4 championship games and a SB. He uses tackles as fullbacks and thinks punt returners are unnecessary for some reason. There's more but I made my point. That's the guy I want to lead me to the promised land. Yessiree! What do you think 5? Why tolerate a loser when right now there are several coaches available that have already WON a SB or 2. How about Shanahan? Cowher? Billick? Gruden? He actually beat AR head to head. Those are all FACTS. Only a moron could defend that record. Why should we settle for a loser when a REAL champion is available!!!

After a fine rookie year, it seems the talent around him got better, but Reggie failed to elevate his game. Here's hoping he makes eyeballs pop in training camp and beyond this year....if not the thanks for the effort, and good luck wherever you wind up.

The Eagles should upload Brown for anything that they can get. He is now the 6th receiver on a team that probably only needs 5.

Wolf you did NOT answer my questions. How many rings does AR have as a head coach? The questions about the QBs have nothing to do with DM. I said nothing about trading anybody. The questions are simple and staight forward. How many rings as a head coach and would you ax the 3 QBs? Man up and answer.

Al Davis is holding out for Micheal Vick! He will show y'all fools once again that he's one of the BEST QB's in the league come 2011. He may not have the arm that McWhiner has, but he can surely run! McStumble ought to learm from him or Randall.....

aintezbeingreen, the lack of top flight offensive talent to help DM has been ARs biggest mistake. He drafted DM to help him win and then tried to make him do it virtually all alone. No running game is a codicil to the above point. If you look at the help the Manning boys have had as well as Warner and others it is laughable to look at what DM has had to work with and sad at the same time. The fact that he has stood in their and taken a pounding while leading the Es to 5 championship games is something to be admired, not shortchanged. Hopefully DM can reap the benefits of this years draft and FA additions before his talent wanes and has to be replaced. He deserves that chance. Why it took AR so long to see the light is a mystery and perhaps he opened his eyes before it was too late. We'll see.

I agree with the last statement. Minus T.O. and rookie DJack, you'd have to add up all the other receivers this team has had to equal a number one. So my advice to reggie is do whatever you have to do to get on the field. Because unlike this organization who has been in denial over their wide receivers for the past decade, the rest of the league is seeing 20/20. If you can't make it here, you can't make it anywhere.

wolf, I'm still waiting for my answer. How many rings does AR have as a head coach? How many rings does AR have as a head coach? Would you have wanted to trade Marino after 10 years or Elway after losing 3 straight SBs. I'm throwing in Jim Kelly too. Would you have axed him after losing 4 straight SBs. Answer the questions please. I need a number and a yes or no on 3 questions. Easy. Add your reasons to the last 3.

5isaKing--You have no clue sometimes, Kolb is learning just like rivers behind brees. Kolb will be good, especially with all this talent around him next year or 2 years... Reggie Brown is weak and scared, trade him for some under armour or a football tee. Rather have avant out there as our 3rd/4th.

Those of you who have actually looked at Reggie's numbers will know this, but he could actually be productive this season. No doubt that last year was a complete wash, but it was for Shaun Andrews as well, yet everyone expects him to come back and be a huge part of the offense. For a guy who came to the Birds in 05 (meaning McNabb had injury shortened seasons in Reggie's first AND second years) he hasn't done that badly. I agree that he hasn't panned out the way we all hoped he would, but I haven't given up on him and I don't think the Eagles have either. His biggest problem is he seems to be an awkward, in-between size of not being big or solid enough to go over the middle regularly, but at the same time is not fast enough to stretch the field. If he can find the motivation to stay on top of things and make sure he's prepared to contribute (timing, running good routes, etc.), he could have a very nice season. Maybe the combination of being healthy and having one QB throwing to him all year will change things for the better.

Reggie was hurt most of last year but he was productive before that. Not spectacular, but productive. He better learn to play special teams in a hurry though because he's the odd-man out if he can't play special teams. The question asked by the article is just more meaningless speculation about a hypothetical situation that may or may not happen.

I hope Reggie realizes that no Eagles receiver drafted by Andy Reid has ever gone to another team and had success. If you cant make the Eagles as a receiver, then you will not have success anywhere else (see Pinkston, FredX, McMullen, etc...)

Dear Philly.com Staff: The media in Philly is a story in and of itself. Writing speculative stories, such as this one, does nothing to further the good of the teams or the city. In fact it does nothing at all except get picked up by the national bandwidth. Next thing you know we'll hear: "Reggie Brown wants out of Philly." This is not journalism - this is simply speculation. Thank you Sheil for pointing out the obvious, that we have an abundance of WRs, but is it really necessary to get Reggie Brown to comment on something like this?

His role changed with Jackson coming aboard and was running the wrong routes in the games. He doesn't have bad hands or a fear of going over the middle, or just a slow possesion receiver. The ment preparation is where he failed. He was taken off the field cause he was in the wrong spots when his number came up. NFL is all timing at that level, He was useless to McNabb because when he looked where he was supposed to be he and was not there. QB's don't actually look at the whole field or find a receiver, they look at certain spots on the field at specific times. @dutchman who is baskin? At least get the names right and offenses don't work that way. Different formations require different skills its not just receiver 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.

Love that Reid called Reggie a "snoozer." In this economy it may be hard for a slow possession receiver with questionable hands, fear of going over the middle, and inadequate physical and mental preparation, to find work in the NFL.

Brown is the odd man out. If he has something left in the tank, he should want to go somewhere else. Realistically, Avant and Baskin have established good roles int he offense. jackson and curtis are effectively the starters. Maclin is locked in for several years which makes Brown #6. he should be in the prime years of his career instead of at the back of the pack.
