Why are the Eagles 9-point favorites?

Our weekly visit from Dave Staley of sportsbook.com:

Q: What's the line this week for Eagles-'Skins?

A: Philadelphia is currently nine-point favorite, which is exactly where it opened. After a dismal first half of the season in which Washington went 1-7 against the spread, the 'Skins covered their last two games with ease. Two weeks ago, they were three-point underdogs to the Broncos, but won outright by 10. Then last week, they lost by one point as 10.5-point 'dogs.

Washington’s defense surrenders just 17.8 points per game, good enough for sixth in the NFL. However, it is the offense that gives fits to Redskins bettors, ranking 29th in the NFL, scoring 14.6 PPG.

The Eagles’ offensive numbers, on the other hand, are pretty impressive. They are putting 26.6 points on the board per game, and that number improves to 29 when playing at the Linc.

Something that Eagles bettors can’t ignore though is the fact that the Redskins won their last two games in Philadelphia outright despite being underdogs in both games.

This game means so much more to the Eagles though as they’ll need a victory to keep pace with the Cowboys in the NFC East.

So far, 60 percent of the bettors are on the Eagles, so I don’t see this number moving down at all.

Q: What about the over/under?

A: As for the total, we opened it at 41 but quickly adjusted it to 40.5. Our handicappers are concentrating on both teams’ solid defenses and the Skins’ poor offense, instead of the Eagles' high-scoring offense.

I can’t argue with their logic as you’ll probably need the Redskins to score a couple of touchdowns to do their part in covering the over. You won’t find me counting on Jason Campbell and a Clinton Portis-less Redskins offense to get in the end zone a couple of times.

The early bettors seem to be thinking the same thing as 53 percent of the money is on the under.

The under covered four out of the last five times these teams met in Philly.
