Catching up on some national opinions about the Michael Vick signing.

And most of it is positive, with people calling the Eagles and Vick a pretty good match.

Interestingly enough, quite a bit has been written about how this will affect Donovan McNabb's psyche. McNabb said yesterday that he lobbied for the Eagles to add Vick, but apparently not everyone believes him.

Here is a sampling of national opinion. We'll do more links later.

SI.com's Peter King calls the Eagles and Vick a near-perfect match, but wonders how it will affect McNabb:

This is a great segue to Vick's second career. What I'd be a concerned about is the effect the signing will have on Donovan McNabb. There are those around the Eagles who think that -- despite McNabb kissing and making up with Reid and the organization after his ugly benching last November for poor play -- the incumbent really doesn't trust Reid. Despite what he'll say publicly, and he'll say all the right things, McNabb may begin to think deep down that Reid is trying to replace him again.

Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post seems to take the other side with McNabb:

Vick is an Eagle because of his relationship with Donavan McNabb and because of McNabb’s ability to handle the situation. McNabb is tough and doesn’t let things bother him, but this signing has the potential to be a disaster for him. We all know the backup quarterback is the favorite of the fans, especially in Philadelphia.

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com calls the move a slap in the face for McNabb:

The signing of Michael Vick is another indication of that. Just another slap in the face of McNabb who's been smacked so many times he must feel like a punch drunk Mike Tyson. It constantly seems as if the city of Philadelphia and the Eagles organization can't wait to ship McNabb's big butt out of town as quickly as possible. Oh, and that's what the Vick signing means. If you don't believe that Vick is McNabb's heir -- sooner rather than later -- you're a fool. McNabb is once again being prepped for pasture.

Matt Bowen of the National Football Post takes a look at Vick's role with the Eagles, and sounds excited:

Sure, we can talk about the wildcat, but I’m thinking bigger. Put him on the field with McNabb at the same time, create specific packages for him in the red zone, backed up and in third down situations. Align him in the slot, in the backfield and use pre-snap movement to get him the ball quickly — with blockers and open field in front of him. Lots and lots of options, folks.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen thinks Philly is a good fit for Vick:

It had to be a team with a strong owner. A strong organization. A strong head coach. A passionate fan base. And, yes, an established, stable quarterback. That was a strategy that was thoughtfully formed by Vick's agent, Joel Segal, and certainly endorsed by coach-turned-mentor Tony Dungy, commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith. Oh, and Vick himself.

Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com says Reid deserves the benefit of the doubt:

So let's give Reid the benefit of the doubt after Thursday's stunning signing of disgraced quarterback Michael Vick. But for his sake and that of the Eagles, Reid's hunch had better be right. This is the kind of boom-or-bust decision that could help bring Reid his first Super Bowl title or tear his team apart. The stakes are that high.

Calling the Eagles and Vick "a pretty good match" is a back-handed compliment.

Philly has a terrible dog fighting problem, one you don't encounter in other cities. Anyone who's lived here has had to deal with it at some level. This forever ties the Eagles in my mind with what I've seen in my own neighborhood, and how hard it was to get enforcement in there and get it cleaned up. A lot of those dogs had to be euthanized in the two locations in South Philly I'm referring to. The rest the aid groups that the Utleys raise money for struggled to get homes for the dogs, and had a lot of success, but it took a whole huge group of people of good will to do that. Now you have the Eagles telling us "just get over it" with Vick. My fan gear goes in the trash today. I'll stick with the Phillies.

The kid said he was shame, embrassed and felt he committed a inhumane act for which he now sees was pointless. He's saying the right things of a contrite man. The upside as a fan is unbelievable. This kid playing with the fire he brings to the game, and with a humbled spirit can be a weapon that brings Phila a Super Bowl win. Not to mention that as an Organization the Eagles provide access to citizens whom may have paid a penalty in life for bad judgement that sends them afoul of the law. This is reflection of a issue with the greater society. Society's cast-aways. Can America continue with the building of a permanent underclass of citizens whom are felons? Powerful move for the Eagles. Excellent weapon to put on the field. Glad I believe in God and Forgiveness.

The dog stuff is takes away from the fact that Vick is a bad passer, not average, bad. The Iggles are pass-happy and they bring in this rag arm. Other than 5 and 36 the offensive roster looks like a nursery school, with weaver as the grizzled vet at 5 years.

The Eagles have a good chance at the Super Bowl if their D-line and O-line are outstanding. Even before Vick, they had the skill players in place, although question marks are at running back. McCoy and Buckley may be good enough if Westbrook misses games. If the lines aren't good enough, McNabb, Vick, Westbrook, Jackson, Samuel, et. al. will provide excitement and maybe one playoff win.

Just had to comment as a lifetime Atlanta resident and Falcons fan. What the hell are the Eagles thinking? Let's get past his heinous crimes against dogs, his smearing of the reputation of the Falcons and NFL, giving the finger to fans, attempt to sneak "water bottle" through airport securtity, etc.,etc. He's a LOUSY quarterback. No accuracy, can't read defenses, 24 fumbles his last two years, lead the league in sacks his last two years. He's a tremendous athlete with no ability to handle the most cerebral position in all of sports. Find an example of him checking down to his third receiver in his entire career. Pass to his second reciever, maybe 10 times a season. Why was Roddy White a nobody till Vick was gone. Putting Vick at QB is dumber than a Wade Phillips game plan. Philadelphia was the only team in that division I could stand but I guess I'll have to reevaluate the Redskins.

As a reader, don't you just love it when the supporting copy of a news story blatantly fails to bolster the opening premise. Here we open with "And most of it is positive, with people calling the Eagles and Vick a pretty good match." However, each ensuing comment by the renowned "Sports Pundits and Writers" seems to come with a BIG "BUT." Why all the fuss Gus? After last nights showcase of new Eagle talent at running back and wide receiver, Intern Coach Nagy could take this years Birds for a run to the playoffs. Add to that, the fact that Vick appeared sincerely humbled at today's press conference, and what Eagles fans are going to get is one heck of a show. That McCoy slices through the line beautifully, and on two occasions, with just a glimmer of a hole. Weaver looked sharp and so did Eldra Buckley. No. There's very little downside to the signing of Michael Vick, and quite frankly, I think, when the same noted pundits above reflect upon this signing and the Eagles Championship season in February 2010, they'll write about this being "a brilliant stroke of football genius." With regard to the Dog-fighting itself, let me say that I cannot fathom someone being a part of such an uncivilized activity in any way shape or form. It just doesn't register with me that someone could somehow get some kind of entertainment out of such a brutal act. But having said that, I've always firmly believed that one should leave the judging of his fellow man to the "Big Guy." And of course, "he who is without sin cast the first stone" isn't a bad guide either. That out of the way, all I see is McNabb, Vick and the rest of this Eagle offensive machine lighting up our football Sundays...BUT!

    R. Reagin is right.......Lets add the veneral disease episodes with he and his brother in Atlanta; the gun episode in the McDonalds in Atlanta......this guy has had more chances than the chance cards in the game of monopoly.....How do you expect him to act if not contrite during interviews. Even hardened criminals admit they were wrong if it got them into the good graces of the parole board. I am not against second chances but I am against those who have abused the second chance opportunity given them, and those organizations/individuals who have no morals......At least T.O. came to us without any prior criminal record/

I am a graduate of LaSalle and Villanova. The Michael Vick thing is it for me. Burning all jersies, hats and tickets. The owner is slug and an enabler who cares ONLY ABOUT THE MONEY. No wonder this team has never won a super bowl. If they win one now, I won't be watching. Eff all things philly and eagles.
