What they're saying: Eagles in position to land Boldin

POSTED: Tuesday, March 10, 2009, 10:14 PM

Time for an offseason edition of "What they're saying."

This is where we scour the Web for Eagles links and bring them directly to you.

We'll start with a brief post tonight, and many more links on Wednesday.

And remember, for the best local coverage from The Inquirer and Daily News, check out philly.com's Eagles section.

Without further ado...

On SportsCenter (or maybe ESPNews) tonight, John Clayton was asked about the Eagles, and more specifically Donovan McNabb. Clayton talked about the Eagles now having12 picks in this year's draft and a lot of cap room. He speculated that they are in position to do something big, mentioning specifically Anquan Boldin and recently release Rams tackle Orlando Pace.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated seems to share Clayton's opinion.

In his reader mailbag today, King said he does not expect Boldin to be back with the Cardinals. And guess which two teams he mentioned as possible new homes for the talented wide receiver:

The Eagles and Giants, two receiver-needy teams, are in position to deal for Anquan Boldin, who I continue to say will not be a Cardinal by July. Philly has 21, 28 and 53, the Giants 29, 45 and 60. I find it hard to believe the Eagles won't trade for Boldin. Very hard. He's a perfect fit, and they've got the cap room to sign him.

I'm not saying it's going to happen. Just thought I'd pass along the links.

The Eagles should trade a 1st round and a 3rd round for Boldin, and then either sign or draft a halfback to help brain. Then sign pace too a 2 or 3 year deal we need a big body like him. Then get rid of reggie brown, maybe add him in the deal for Boldin. Maybe go out and get another pass rusher like jason taylor. We need play makers on this roster to make to the superbowl and win, Mcnabb cant do it by himself.

Everyone stop blaming Mcnabb for everything he has only two good players on offence to begin with. He doesnt have much and still lead his team to NFC championships. Philly needs not just good players but great player. We cant go to the superbowl with player like Reggie Brown and Gaither.

Koulet?!!?! I hope you didnt mean to throw the whole Dawkins in with the bad mouthing his employer part. That never happened. If it did, id like to know when and what was said. Because as a life long brian dawkins fan, i have never known that to happen. Anyway... Boldin would be a nice fit, but i agree, enough with the talkin and make sh*t happen. Sorry for Warner, if Boldin wont return. He can trade birds, definitely.

How does this sound for a red zone package. Boldin, D-Jac., Curtis, Weaver, Westbrook and Gonzo? HMMMMMMM How would you like to be the D-cord. facing that? But then again I like to dream...

Didn't we learn our lesson about the effects of a selfish WR already? How many times is this city going to make the same mistakes? Any WR that cries after a game his team WON, a playoff game nonetheless, due to his lack of touches is insanity. I want nothing to do with Boldin. What is the obsession with this city and self-centered big WR's? We DON'T need a WR! During the loss to the Cardinals, our WR corp put up 300 yards and we LOST! And that was after McNabb missed some guys. Why isn't the defense getting attention after yielding 32 points to a 40 year old QB? Why isn't the running game getting slammed after averaging 2 yards a carry over THREE PLAYOFF GAMES. Let's keep our eye on the real needs of this team.

Peter King has zero credibility if for no other reason than his blatant love affair for Brett Favre and refusal to acknowledge that Favre has not been a MVP caliber QB for over a year OR that Favre is basically a less abrasive Terrell Owens with his selfishness and ability to attack management and divide a locker room.

Boldin may be a TO in disguise, but he's the best option out there for a big, tough receiver that the Eagles need to boost their redzone offense. He has yet to prove himself as a controversial receiver with the exception of his tantrum stint in the NFC Championship. Harrison and Holt are of course future Hall of Fame WRs, but Boldin is younger. As everyone can see, the Eagles have a hard time signing or keeping anyone over 30. The first day (week) of Free Agency I saw little hope in the Iggs, but even though Banner is a waste of time and Lurie as well, but I can't see anyone being that stupid as to keep 40 million dollars under cap room when there will be no cap next year and not utilize their 12 draft picks to make a big move and bolster the offense.

PLEEEEAAASSSSEEEEE TRADE FOR AND SIGN THE MAN! You can't compare him to T.O. This is his first negative press in his entire career, and if he makes more money he WILL be happy. He would be the man in Philly, rather than 2nd fiddle in AZ. It makes complete complete sense to the front office, which is why I'll be shocked if it happens.

Holt and Pace are too old and worn out - injuries...I would not add them expecially since you let Tra, Dawk and others walk. Adding Reggie would be best thing they could do - but they should not trade both first rounders - still need that RB to rescue BW

From the Sporting News on NFL free-agency: Best non re-signing Brian Dawkins, S, Broncos. Think back to when the Eagles had cornerbacks Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor. They weren't sentimental about keeping them at an advanced age, and it was the right decision. Dawkins was a beloved, productive Eagle, but at 35, it was time to let him go to safety-desperate Denver. Quintin Mikell came on strong as the other safety last season, outplaying Dawkins, and he and ex-Brown Sean Jones make a fine young pair in their prime.

I'd do a #1 and Reggie Brown for Boldin. Otherwise, I wouldn't want to see a #1 and a #3 gone for him. Too much risk for another locker room cancer.

pace cant stay on the field, i am with the king on this, they should have just re-signed thomas if that was an issue they were going to address via free agency....boldin for the 28th and 3rd rounder should be on the table right now!

I heard they're going to resign Harold Charmichael. He's a little old but his height makes up for it.

If the Eagles keep the picks and draft a few WRs, then we are truly re-building for the future. If they get Boldin, they are giving McNabb and the fans one last chance to win with Donovan. We'll see how committed they really are to Donovan suceeding......

Also, in order for us to grab Boldin, we need to trade Sheldon Brown. The Cardinals came out and said pretty much "if we trade him, we want a cheap starting corner, and draft picks".. That means pretty much Sheldon Brown (I believe the lowest paid starting corner in the NFL) and #21 in the first round as a starting point for negotiations.

STOP ASKING FOR PACE YOU SCHUMCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! Pace has missed ***37 out of 48*** games in the last three seasons. He's only played in ***11 out of 48*** games in the last 3 seasons. His ratio of playing to not playing is 1:4. You want to sign him so he can miss 75% of the games in the season?? If you people ask for Pace one more time, I swear you deserved to be slapped. He's been finished for THREE SEASONS NOW! What is the point of getting rid of Tra Thomas, who is old and ineffective, but uninjured for Orlando Pace who is old and ineffective, but also ***INJURED 75% OF THE LAST THREE SEASONS!!!*** STOP ASKING FOR PACE!!! HES GARRRRBAAAAAGGGGEEEEE!!! STOP IT NOW!!!

Keep the draft choices and grab Pettigrew and Moreno and a tackle. Then a good offensive line can make an average QB( that would be McNabb) look pretty good.

I hear Jerry Rice is available. Maybe we can sign Johnny Unitas as well. These are about as realistic as anyone who thinks that our Eagles will do the right thing anymore. As long as Banner is in charge, expect us to only sign old, past-their prime and/or injured players. But, on the bright side, that means that they will sign Runyan in July to the veteran minimum . . .

Bottom line the Eagles need a wideout bad, really bad we will not win a superbowl with this roster or go to the playoffs. Trade to get Bouldin that will take presurre of McNabb and Brain. and get rid of reggie please get rid of him too many drop balls in big games. And finaly move Curtis to Slot he is way more effective in that postion. If we make these moves we will go to the superbowl and win.

I'm with Jbettner and GM86 in that DM gets too much of the blame when the team losses. Sometimes it's him, sometimes the D, sometimes the drops, sometimes the coaches. Bolden would be an upgrade if he can be had at a decent price. Pace would solve the LT problem for a season or two and remove the need for using a high draft pick on that position. There can be no other reason for all those draft picks. In that regard I agree with Clayton. While a lot of you guys are carping on the amount of money the Eagles are under the cap I think it's an enviable position to be in, but only if the picks and the cap space are used to make the team better NOW. If after FA and the draft there are still holes in the team you have the right to scream. Right now it's too early.

not going to happen-Eagles never trade high picks for a player & I don't think the cards want to trade him to one of their top competitors -& also Banners a schmuck-probably the biggest reason.

jwatson, The QB is not the problem its the wideouts he has to work with. Curtis has been a slot wideout his whole career almost and the Eagles make him a number 1 and Brown sucks, Jackson is young, LJ was the worst, Hank could be playing better, and Avant is soild, but not a pro bowler. The sad thing is that Avant has the best hands of all the wideouts. If a wideout drops passes how in the hell is that the QB fault which was the cases this year. I support McNabb to the fulliest because some of the NFL poster boys had great success with pro bowl type wideouts and McNabb has done it with Class C wideouts. Somebody said McNabb for Cutler thats just dumb! "When was the last time Denver went to the Playoffs?

You folks have to be crazy not to want Boldin. Boldin would make us a much better them and will help open Jackson and Curtis up a little more. You want a wideout who is going to make teams try to double team them and open lanes for your other wideouts.

Hey Dave Clemens I really hope that was sarcasm. Last time I checked we've never won a Super Bowl. If we get Boldin, McNabb will put up 2004 type numbers again. Trade one of those first rounders and a 3rd. Grab a RB in the first round and move Shawn Andrews to LT. There some big problems solved.

Boldin needs to be in Philly. So does Weaver. Trade him for one of the 1st round picks and another pick, maybe a 3rd. AS far as "Roy Williams" type compensation, I'm with Otto, forget it. He is not worth mortaging the future on. Plus, they could still get a nice back in Rd. 2 and a great tackle in Rd. 1. Win-Win.

Boldin is a possession type guy, not the endzone fade jumpball threat we need in the endzone to improve our red zone performance. But at least he would take things up a notch and probably keep Donovan in Philly.

lets remember that john clayton and peter king are just giving their opinions - no more than a caller talking to eskin asking about the same. A deal would be great, but I'm not on the edge of my seat, awaiting great news from this franchise. Let's cancel out those accolades for 5 NFC championships in 8 years - OK? In the last 8 years there have been 8 different NFC teams in the Super Bowl - that represents 50% OF THE NFC!!!

Holt is alright, but Bouldin is a tougher, bigger guy and we need that in the red zone. I can't help but believe the Cardinals wouldn't accept the 28th pick (and Reggie Brown) for Bouldin. Whatever the deal, PLEASE add Reggie to it. His playing and wrestling with McNabb on the sidelines after yet another dropped pass has gotten way too old!

Agreed that it won't happen, unless Arizona wakes up and realizes they need a defense and want to use our draft picks to build it,,, that team was a fluke. Eagles should go after FB Karney (Carney?) released from the Saints.
