What they're saying about the Eagles

Here's a roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles after their Monday night loss to the Bears:

SI.com's Don Banks has the Eagles 16th in his power rankings:

About last week. I could not have been more wrong regarding the Eagles and where I saw them headed. I offer a thousand mea culpas, with a few dozen pardons sprinkled in. After the Eagles let yet another fourth-quarter lead get away at home, this time against Chicago on Monday night, Philly's road to the playoffs grew considerably in its degree of difficulty. This is the last time I will have the Eagles peeking their noses above the bottom half of our rankings if they fail once again.

The Eagles drop to 16th in ESPN.com's power rankings:

After losing to Chicago on Monday night, the inconsistent Eagles are three games behind the Giants and one of this season's biggest disappointments.

ESPN.com's John Clayton gives the Eagles a C for the first half of the season:

Dream team? Not even close. The Eagles' season is quickly becoming a nightmare. Blame it on an out-of-sync defense and Michael Vick's inconsistency.

Elliot Harrison of NFL.com has the Eagles 17th:

You got to catch that ball at midfield before the half, Jeremy Maclin. Huge moment in a 17-10 game. People tend to forget those plays right before half, but that catch could've ignited a drive to either tie the game or at least get a significant field goal before halftime. Then there was his stumble on fourth down at the end of the last Philly possession. Two huge events in a game with significant playoff implications.

Clark Judge of CBSSports.com has LeSean McCoy in the running for Offensive Player of the Year through the first half of the season:

McCoy is tied for the league lead in touchdowns, leads it in rushing and leads it in first downs. In short, he's a load.

Judge also names the Eagles his most disappointing team:

The Eagles made a zillion moves in the offseason to acquire the talent necessary to catch Green Bay. But it's not the Packers they're chasing. It's the Giants and Cowboys. More proof that chemistry always wins out over talent.

Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com agrees with him:

How can the "Dream Team" be 3-5 at the midway point? Their playoff dreams are turning into a nightmare. Runners-up: Chargers, Chiefs.

Brian Billick of FoxSports.com has the Eagles 17th:

The Eagles didn't record a single sack against Jay Cutler Monday, and that is a bad sign for a defense that is built to get after the quarterback. They were able to come up with some key turnovers, but even that wasn't enough to stay on top. Based on NFL history, the Eagles only had a five percent chance of making the playoffs anyway, and now even that is a pipe dream.

Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com gives the Eagles a D- for their first-half performance and calls Nnamdi Asomugha the team's biggest disappointment:

The signing of free-agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha was supposed to give Philadelphia the NFL’s best secondary. Asomugha, though, has become mortal while being used in more zone coverage than he played in Oakland. Asomugha also committed a key pass interference penalty on what proved the game-winning drive in Monday night’s 30-24 loss to Chicago.

two words - Juan Castillo. The season started circling the drain when he was hired to run the defense. It does not matter how good the ingredients are if the cook can't even make toast.

If the coaches were doing a good job of coaching the players would be coordinated. IT'S THE COACHING

Coaches/coordinators certainly have significant input, but in the final analysis, it is the players that ultimately determine the success of the team.

We have had success over the years. We may not have a SB win but we've been a pretty good team. We'll probably miss the playoffs this year because this was pretty much a rebuilding year and the lockout didn't help much. I wonder what you guys would be saying if this was a board for a team that hasn't been to the playoffs in 10 + seasons. I see the word moron put out there a lot. If you are paying a guy millions of dollars, you would expect him to be able to play zone and play it effectively. Juan is not a moron for expecting the guy to be a NFL Defensive Back.

Season is over. Just a question of how bad they finish. Anyone who thinks they have a legitimate shot at making the play-offs is delusional.

    Who cares about the Eagles?

Turnovers, stupid penalties, they can't tackle and a defense that can't hold a 4th quarter lead is what they are.

A flash of brilliance against Dallas but inconsistent and certainly not good enough to win 7 of their last 8.

If they all played with McCoy's effort you might have something.

Andy is smarter than everyone though. Team is a joke. Team cannot tackle, cannot cover, commits stupid penalities, stupid turnovers. Horrible defensive coordinator, Vick is highly overratted and we're stuck with him forever now. We've been duped by the Eagles brass again

Here's what I'm saying, this week's game will be the equivalent of last year's Minnesota game. The Eagles will be complacent and unmotivated while a hungry John Skelton plays the role of Joe Webb.

Why not play you players to their strengths. The Castillo experiment is not working.

Look at the picture: this is when Jason Babin was called for roughing the passer when he was obviously pushed into Cutler, even the announcers were calling this horrible. And it gave them 7 points. Not saying the game was the refs fault but this and the no-call when MacClin was draped under a Chicago corner in the red zone which ended up an Eagles punt...what can you do? yes the Birds need to clean up the penalties but if those blind idiots would have called the right thing on two key plays, we might not be reading these articles....just sayin'....

Andy's assessment: just clean up the penalties and turnovers and we'll be fine....

No one is mentioning the other acquisition that was supposed to be a major factor in the "dream team" and that is Rodgers-Cromartie. He is standing in the backfield looking lost on many plays, things are happening around him and he drops out after barely making an effort. I cannot recall a single major contribution he has made this season.
