What they're saying about the Eagles

POSTED: Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 10:33 AM
A national columnist recently named Eagles QB Michael Vick the biggest jerk in the NFL. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

Here's this week's roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles:

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com has released his list of the NFL's 10 biggest jerks. Two Eagles, DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick, make the list. Jackson at six, and Vick at No. 1:

When is Vick allowed to move on? When is that threshold from criminal to forgiven criminal crossed? To some, it already has. But to many, like me, though it's clear that Vick has changed, the crime was so disgraceful, more time is still needed to make sure the change I've seen in him is not an act but permanent. There's almost a simple formula here to follow. The worse the crime, the more time it takes for the re-evaluation.

This is an arrogant approach for me and others, particularly since everyone judging Vick has made their own errors. But there are mistakes and then there are mistakes. For Vick, it will still take more time.

Matt Williamson of ESPN.com looks into his crystal ball and projects the top 15 pass rushers in 2015. He's got Trent Cole barely making the list at No. 15:

Cole is a fantastic, underrated player and pass-rusher. But will that hold true three years from now? Cole turns 30 this season, but he was a fantastic presence rushing the passer in 2011. Plus, the Eagles now have plenty of defensive end options to help spell Cole (and Jason Babin) and extend his career. From the honorable mention group, Chandler Jones was the one I thought had the best chance of being on this list ahead of an aging 2015 version of Cole.

Vick came in at No. 20 in Peter Schrager's Top 100 players list on FoxSports.com:

Vick in the top 25? You better believe it. He still strikes fear in the hearts of NFL coaches and defenders everywhere. And though the Eagles slipped and stumbled out of the gate in 2011, Philly finished the season with four straight victories and four straight mesmerizing performances out of Vick. With a full offseason to work with teammates, a healthy crew of receivers and a focus on the NFC East crown — don’t be shocked when Vick turns in the best season of his career.

Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports takes a look at the 10 best third-day draft picks from 2011. Jason Kelce and Brian Rolle both make his list (Kelce at No. 2 and Rolle at No. 3):

A former walk-on linebacker at Cincinnati. Kelce turned himself into a draftable offensive lineman with pure tenacity. He beat incumbent Jamaal Jackson for the starting job in Eagles camp, and impressed legendary line coach Howard Mudd enough to become the Eagles' first center to start his first NFL game since 1968. Kelce played very well through injuries, and Mudd may have his next Jeff Saturday if Kelce can stay healthy.

Brian McIntyre of NFL.com has the contract details for Eagles safety Oshiomogho Atogwe. He'll make the league minimum ($825,000) with $100,000 fully guaranteed.

In case you missed it from today's Daily News, the crew that runs the Cowboys' Web site had a little birthday message for Vick.

And don't forget to check out the 2012 Eagles Almanac, which is chock full of great information to get you ready for training camp and the upcoming season.

    Jbarry - Reading is Fundamental.

    The following are Sheil's words.

"When is Vick allowed to move on? When is that threshold from criminal to forgiven criminal crossed? To some, it already has. But to many, 'LIKE ME,' though it's clear that Vick has changed, the crime was so disgraceful, more time is still needed to make sure the change I've seen in him is not an act but permanent."

If I'm a waste of a human body, what does that make you?

No, man. The words in italics are the quotes from the "they" in "What they're saying". Sheil takes excerpts from the whole story "they" write and provides a link to the full story. Sheil's writing is only what is NOT in italics.

The hypocrites want the crimes of the black man forgotten and forgiven. They say its the Christian way, yet they do not ever want the crimes of whites forgiven. They live forever and can be used to justify all bad black behavior.

Are you talking about the crimes whites committed against black such as, hanging, beating, burning, raping, drowning, or training dogs to attack and kill them, simply because they didn't like the color of their skins, are those the crimes you are talking about? I wouldn't go there if I were you, and another thing you wouldn't know the Christian way if it slapped you in the face.

Philly fans wouldn't care a fig about Vick's past crimes if he had played the way he and Reid thinks he is capable of. Reid could have been a great coach. He put together some great teams. Unfortunately, he has never understood the most important player on a team is the quarterback. An elite quarterback like Payton Manning can take an average team to the Superbowl. Last year Reid added 8 all pro players and 4 top of the line players to the Eagles and finished 8-8 because he had an erratic quarterback that had 18 interceptions and tied the league worse with 36 turnover. He fixed it by giving Vick a vote of confidence. This will be Reid's legacy. The last elite quaterback Philly had was Norm Van Brocklin
in 1960. In case you're counting, that's 62 years ago.

Actually, just so that it's clear, Vick only had 14 ints. In fact, Vick had LESS turnovers than Eli last year. And over the past two seasons, Vick averages MORE total yards per game, MORE tds per game, and LESS turnovers per game than Eli. Also, 1960 was 52 years ago. Just wanted to clear all that up.

Mike Vick killed a couple of dogs, horrible thing. He went to jail for it, amazing. He's turned his life around, even more amazing. Roethlisberger raped a woman and then displayed his johnny to a teenager in a bar, but all is forgotten. Ray Lewis murdered a guy with a knife in an alley, again, all forgotten. I guess the bottom line here is people care more about dogs then they do humans. Go figure. Oh, let's not forget fancy lawyering and PR spin.

Forgotten by Who? Most people think all of those people you named are low life. Its just the Vick people that think he should be held to a different standard.

L11, BTS is correct. Those are not SK's words, they are the words of that Freeman dude whoever he is.

IMO, SK is the top writer on this site...no hidden agendas, no personal attacks, no snide remarks. He just gives you facts, an occasional opinion and then lets you make up your own mind. I'm fine with that.

Those were not Sheil's opinions on Vick. Those were the opinions of Mike Freemen. Click on the link provided and scroll down to No.1 and you will see word for word Mike Freemen's opinion.

I don't think there is a more impactive individual in the NFL capable of reaching rookies, and youths across the nation with a more positive message. I respect his efforts to motivate a change in behavior. He may not reach them all, but there is a chance one person is listening and because of Vick's personal tragedy may do something productive and change directions with their life's decisions.

mario1239, what games were you watching? Vick had 14 interceptions, 3 were tipped balls that should have been caught. By comparison, Eli threw 18 interceptions in 2011, and 25 in 2010. As a Team the Eagles didn't have 36 turn overs.

If you ask me, Vick's play was impacted by the offensive line early on in the season. Vick took a beating behind the Eagles line during the first 5 games.

@Dexter. Seems you are saying that young people will listen to someone that has been to prison more than someone that has done the right things all along. If that it so, then the culture of our youth is sick indeed.
