What they're saying about the Eagles

POSTED: Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 10:33 AM
A national columnist recently named Eagles QB Michael Vick the biggest jerk in the NFL. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

Here's this week's roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles:

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com has released his list of the NFL's 10 biggest jerks. Two Eagles, DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick, make the list. Jackson at six, and Vick at No. 1:

When is Vick allowed to move on? When is that threshold from criminal to forgiven criminal crossed? To some, it already has. But to many, like me, though it's clear that Vick has changed, the crime was so disgraceful, more time is still needed to make sure the change I've seen in him is not an act but permanent. There's almost a simple formula here to follow. The worse the crime, the more time it takes for the re-evaluation.

This is an arrogant approach for me and others, particularly since everyone judging Vick has made their own errors. But there are mistakes and then there are mistakes. For Vick, it will still take more time.

Matt Williamson of ESPN.com looks into his crystal ball and projects the top 15 pass rushers in 2015. He's got Trent Cole barely making the list at No. 15:

Cole is a fantastic, underrated player and pass-rusher. But will that hold true three years from now? Cole turns 30 this season, but he was a fantastic presence rushing the passer in 2011. Plus, the Eagles now have plenty of defensive end options to help spell Cole (and Jason Babin) and extend his career. From the honorable mention group, Chandler Jones was the one I thought had the best chance of being on this list ahead of an aging 2015 version of Cole.

Vick came in at No. 20 in Peter Schrager's Top 100 players list on FoxSports.com:

Vick in the top 25? You better believe it. He still strikes fear in the hearts of NFL coaches and defenders everywhere. And though the Eagles slipped and stumbled out of the gate in 2011, Philly finished the season with four straight victories and four straight mesmerizing performances out of Vick. With a full offseason to work with teammates, a healthy crew of receivers and a focus on the NFC East crown — don’t be shocked when Vick turns in the best season of his career.

Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports takes a look at the 10 best third-day draft picks from 2011. Jason Kelce and Brian Rolle both make his list (Kelce at No. 2 and Rolle at No. 3):

A former walk-on linebacker at Cincinnati. Kelce turned himself into a draftable offensive lineman with pure tenacity. He beat incumbent Jamaal Jackson for the starting job in Eagles camp, and impressed legendary line coach Howard Mudd enough to become the Eagles' first center to start his first NFL game since 1968. Kelce played very well through injuries, and Mudd may have his next Jeff Saturday if Kelce can stay healthy.

Brian McIntyre of NFL.com has the contract details for Eagles safety Oshiomogho Atogwe. He'll make the league minimum ($825,000) with $100,000 fully guaranteed.

In case you missed it from today's Daily News, the crew that runs the Cowboys' Web site had a little birthday message for Vick.

And don't forget to check out the 2012 Eagles Almanac, which is chock full of great information to get you ready for training camp and the upcoming season.

I'll go out on another limb and presume you mean it's a racial issue. Mike Freeman, who put the list together, is a black man, so if that's what you mean, take it up with him.

GO BACK TO DALLASCOWBOYS.COM you miserable cowboys fan. Philly.com is for Philly Sports fans, not haters. If you don't like Vick, don't write about him. He doesn't criticize you while you bus tables at the local diner....get a life

The sad truth is that some of these posters consider the crazy physcho Vick as their hero...just because Vick can scramble 15 yards a couple times per game, then they will completely ignore Vick's torturing and killing of all these helpless dogs... However if Vick was on any other football team such as Oakland, these same posters would dispise Vick like the millions of others do....LOL

You must be mad you can't afford the bus ride to the games, let alone a ticket.

@phil500: Nobody is ignoring anything. The guy served his time. Get over it. It's people like you who won't let it go even though we all know you do nothing in regard to helping dogs and endangered animals. How many dogs do you own? Probably none. If you do actually own one, did it come from a shelter? Nope. Did you actually adopt one of the rescued dogs from Vick's operation? No way. How much time do you devote to local shelters and other causes that protect dogs and other animals? None. Are you out there rallying against the treatment of chickens, pigs, cows, fish, and other animals that are farmed inhumanely? Nope. I think you are the biggest hypocrite on this board. Get a life, dude. Seriously.

You just made some very good points, thanks for making them. The main one to complain is the main one to do absolutely nothing.

I couldn't bark with Quixote more... through the centuries, little pups like me have suffered though severe mental and physical damage from the evil jaws of demon pit bulls. This rotten breed should be pemanantly placed in Dogtanamo Bay.

Yapping back at you Toto. I've run roughshod with Dick Dastardly for years doing things I'm not proud of. But, I have never ripped the throat out of my fellow breed for laughs and giggles. Occupy Dog Street and get rid of pit bulls!

The people defending Vick want always to cite Rothlisberger. Why? The Anti Vick people never said he was any better. The only thing that I can see is that the pro Vick people enter his name because he is white. Most white people think that BOTH of them are dregs. But it seems that there can never be a bad black person.

Why? Because he's a three time rapist who should have been prosecuted and in jail, that's why. I hope that answers your question.

Another hater who knows his post will be quoted so he writes this garbage....vick did it, vick paid for it, vick is trying to get it back together and only 20 years will tell us if he was successful in his life and in football......but a writer with limited skills and no imagination and no willingness to research a new story writes trash like that....and the sad truth is this rag prints it......so much for the integrity of this media outlet...

Just because you don't hate Vick doesn't mean you love Vick. There are those of us who think he did horrible things, paid for it, changed his ways and have moved past it. It just isn't a factor anymore. Those of you who can't? That's your problem. Don't try to make us feel guilty because you are obsessed. It won't work and we don't care about how you view Vick.

And so Vick is voted blah blah blah. Who cares? Does that mean I HAVE to think that way too or can I make up my own mind?
