What they're saying about the Eagles

POSTED: Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 10:33 AM
A national columnist recently named Eagles QB Michael Vick the biggest jerk in the NFL. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

Here's this week's roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles:

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com has released his list of the NFL's 10 biggest jerks. Two Eagles, DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick, make the list. Jackson at six, and Vick at No. 1:

When is Vick allowed to move on? When is that threshold from criminal to forgiven criminal crossed? To some, it already has. But to many, like me, though it's clear that Vick has changed, the crime was so disgraceful, more time is still needed to make sure the change I've seen in him is not an act but permanent. There's almost a simple formula here to follow. The worse the crime, the more time it takes for the re-evaluation.

This is an arrogant approach for me and others, particularly since everyone judging Vick has made their own errors. But there are mistakes and then there are mistakes. For Vick, it will still take more time.

Matt Williamson of ESPN.com looks into his crystal ball and projects the top 15 pass rushers in 2015. He's got Trent Cole barely making the list at No. 15:

Cole is a fantastic, underrated player and pass-rusher. But will that hold true three years from now? Cole turns 30 this season, but he was a fantastic presence rushing the passer in 2011. Plus, the Eagles now have plenty of defensive end options to help spell Cole (and Jason Babin) and extend his career. From the honorable mention group, Chandler Jones was the one I thought had the best chance of being on this list ahead of an aging 2015 version of Cole.

Vick came in at No. 20 in Peter Schrager's Top 100 players list on FoxSports.com:

Vick in the top 25? You better believe it. He still strikes fear in the hearts of NFL coaches and defenders everywhere. And though the Eagles slipped and stumbled out of the gate in 2011, Philly finished the season with four straight victories and four straight mesmerizing performances out of Vick. With a full offseason to work with teammates, a healthy crew of receivers and a focus on the NFC East crown — don’t be shocked when Vick turns in the best season of his career.

Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports takes a look at the 10 best third-day draft picks from 2011. Jason Kelce and Brian Rolle both make his list (Kelce at No. 2 and Rolle at No. 3):

A former walk-on linebacker at Cincinnati. Kelce turned himself into a draftable offensive lineman with pure tenacity. He beat incumbent Jamaal Jackson for the starting job in Eagles camp, and impressed legendary line coach Howard Mudd enough to become the Eagles' first center to start his first NFL game since 1968. Kelce played very well through injuries, and Mudd may have his next Jeff Saturday if Kelce can stay healthy.

Brian McIntyre of NFL.com has the contract details for Eagles safety Oshiomogho Atogwe. He'll make the league minimum ($825,000) with $100,000 fully guaranteed.

In case you missed it from today's Daily News, the crew that runs the Cowboys' Web site had a little birthday message for Vick.

And don't forget to check out the 2012 Eagles Almanac, which is chock full of great information to get you ready for training camp and the upcoming season.

I've been fighting crime all of my dog years and have never been snout-to-snout with a more vicious creature than a pit bull. They are a menace to dogciety. Occupy Dog Street.

I'm sure Vick & DeSean are ok 1 on 1. But put them in a pack with the rest of their neighbor's and I'm pretty sure Jerk is what you would get!!

Look, if Vick were on anyother team, Eagle fans would detest him and wish great harm come to him! The only reason these people get all up in arms is because he QBs their team; they know deep down that he's not a very nice human being. Stop with the Vick is Mother Teresa comments; he's Vick, he is what he is.

Lists are stupid and people that write lists have nothing better to do journalistic-ally. Comparing other atrocities to what Vick did will never diminish what he did, it was awful. Comparing it to hunting, palease you need to try harder. I forgive him but dont expect everyone to, it will follow him around forever, get used to it. The point about the time it takes to forgive was spot on I think and reasonable.

@charmaine, just how slow do I need to type so you can understand it? What others have done has NOTHING to do with Vick; what Vick did has to do with Vick. By the way, Vick did NOT "man up" to anything; he was busted and immediately lied his a** off to authorities. If you're going to discuss something, at least be honest in what you post.

@The Dude Abides... umm it sure seems to me like the only reason you don't like Vick is because of the dog fighting thing since you didn't list any other reason for being a "hater". Some people hold dogs in higher esteem than humans. It's clear that you're one of them. Freak.

Before you begin to talk about Kobe and rape, you may want to check your facts. Sounded more like extortion to me. Check for yourself.

@charmaine, blessed1 and cheesesteak, no matter how many times you call out these haters that act like they love dogs, they will continue to spew hate. Its all they know! It wouldn't matter at this point if Mike Vick killed cats, cows, parakeets, etc. Haters are dumb and hate for no reason other than they are ashamed of their own lives! Fret not, Mike Vick fans, haters come and go. When we Eagles fans have the unfortunate pain of The Mike Vick Experience leaving the Eagles, there will be another Eagles favorite that the haters will hate on. Desean probably. GO MIKE VICK GO!

Leonard Little would be a better comparison than Big Ben. Better comparison than hunting is factory farming as another post mentioned. Although in that post the rest was garbage, claiming someone isnt doing something doesnt negate them from making points about any given subject.

It absolutely makes sense. First, the haters I was responding to weren't actually making points. Saying Vick participated in a dog fighting operation isn't a point at all. Everyone knows that. Repeating the same garbage over and over and over again isn't making a point. Second, a hater claiming that they hate Vick "only" because he killed dogs when it's totally obvious to everyone else that the reason for the hate has nothing to do with the dogs makes any "point" irrelevant. A hater claiming on one hand that they are attacking Vick because of animal cruelty but then on the other hand do absolutely NOTHING in regard to all of the animal rights abuses out there proves that they are phony and are only out to disparage somebody who just happens to be a celebrity and an individual who appears to be turning his life around. That's why I made the POINTS I made.

Who are arrogant murderers? Please don't talk about heaven and hell with comments like those. You can't take being a christian or whatever variation you are serious if you talk and think like that. It's crazy that if a white person has any negative opinion on Vick he is racist. So irrational and defensive. Again main question is who are the murderer's your talking about?
