What they're saying about the Eagles

Here's a roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles:

Greg Cosell of NFL Films recently wrote about Michael Vick's development, saying he faces the most critical offseason of his career:

The overriding point with Vick was he too often played outside of structure, and it is not possible to be a consistent NFL quarterback playing that way. I once had a Super Bowl winning head coach tell me and I quote, "The problem with quarterbacks who can run, is they run". Structure, not improvisation, generates consistent execution.

Scouts, Inc. (subscription) ranks the top 50 available free agents. The only Eagle on their list is Evan Mathis, who comes in at No. 24:

Maybe the least known player on my list, Mathis has been extremely effective when given the chance to start. He is a technically sound guard and will be a great asset to any offensive line. He helped make up a fantastic left side of the line in Philadelphia next to Jason Peters.

ESPN.com's Dan Graziano thinks London Fletcher would be a good fit with the Eagles:

An oldie, but still a goodie, Fletcher would have been much higher on this list if it weren't for his advanced age. But he can still play. The Eagles should do everything possible to pluck Fletcher, a leader on and off the field, away from the divisional-rival Redskins.

SI.com's Peter King also has a top-50 free agent list. He's got Mathis 21st and Juqua Parker 40th:

Eagles can't pay everyone. In the right spot, with help, he'll get 10 sacks.

Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com has Mathis 29th:

Mathis signed a one-year deal with the Eagles and played well. That could earn him a nice multi-year contract. He turns 31 in November.

Prisco also lists Derek Landri as one of the little-known players he really likes:

This undersized player was a big surprise for the Eagles last season. Signed as a low-level free agent, he was one of their better pickups. He plays with a lot of effort and his quickness is a plus. Might not be the right fit for every team, but he is a player who will help in the defensive rotation.

NFL.com's Michael Lombardi puts the Eagles in the "He is better than our guy, but it's too hard to make it happen" category for Peyton Manning:

Assuming Manning is healthy, these four teams know that he is better than their current starter, but it likely will be too hard to make the move. They cannot publicly show interest in Manning because it would cause their starter to feel threatened. However, privately all these teams know Manning would be an upgrade.

Pro Football Weekly is hearing that the Eagles could still be interested in drafting a quarterback this year:

The Eagles might be out of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, but they could be interested in a rookie quarterback — even with the Trent Edwards signing. Andy Reid knows the Eagles are on the hook for Michael Vick only one more season without suffering too much of a crippling cap hit after 2012.

PFW has Mathis ranked 63rd among free agents. And they've got Vince Young ranked 76th:

Young had some good moments in his first season with the Eagles, most notably in Philadelphia's Week 11 win over the Giants. However, he threw nine interceptions in 114 attempts. His mobility is his greatest asset, but his accuracy remains too scattershot.
