What I saw: Eagles vs. Seahawks

Here's what I saw during tonight's Eagles' 31-14 loss to the Seahawks.
OFFENSE
* Vince Young threw four interceptions and finished with a quarterback rating of 52.7. He made a baffling decision on the Eagles' first offensive play and was picked off on a throw to the sideline intended for DeSean Jackson (I think). Analyst Mike Mayock was in disbelief, calling it a "horrific" interception. The second INT was on on Riley Cooper. Young hit Cooper in the hands, but he couldn't hang on. The third interception was probably the most costly. The Eagles were driving, down 14, and Young looked for McCoy on a swing pass. Linebacker David Hawthorne picked it off and took it to the house for a 77-yard touchdown. The final pick was a desperation throw to Riley Cooper down the sideline.
* Young finished 17-for-29 for 208 yards. He hit Riley Cooper for 47 yards to set up LeSean McCoy's 1-yard touchdown run in the second. McCoy, playing with a toe injury, gave a great effort with 84 yards on 17 carries. He also had four catches for 49 yards.
* It's impossible to make sense of Andy Reid's decision to not call timeout near the end of the first half. The Seahawks ran a third-down play with 1:07 left, before setting up for a 49-yard field goal. The Eagles had two timeouts, but for some reason, chose not to use them. Seattle finally called timeout with 21 seconds left and kicked the field goal. The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds. The Eagles took over at their own 40 and drove to the Seahawks' 47, before settling on a Hail Mary. Had they saved the 35-40 seconds earlier, they would have had time to get into field-goal range.
* The Eagles had a 17-play, 80-yard drive, taking 10:13 off the clock in the second half. Young found McCoy for a 2-yard touchdown on a shovel pass.
* Mayock carried over Cris Collinsworth's man-crush on Jason Peters, saying he's playing better than any left tackle in the NFL. Peters has been one of the few bright spots on this team.
* I have to re-watch to be sure, but it seemed like Danny Watkins had a rough time. He was called for a false start on third down in the first quarter, turning 3rd-and-9 into 3rd-and-14. And Watkins got beat in pass protection on a third down in the second. Young was under pressure and threw incomplete to Chad Hall on the play. Todd Herremans had some issues too at right tackle.
* On a 3rd-and-2 in the third, McCoy reversed field and Young delivered a great block. McCoy picked up 10 yards and a first down. Young played a bad game, but it was good to see him deliver full effort on that play.
* Did you notice former Eagles Chris Clemons get in Reid's face after making a tackle near the sidelines?
* DeSean Jackson was invisible. He had four catches for 34 yards. The cameras caught Jackson running his route at half speed and never looking back for the ball on a third down in the second where Young was looking in his direction. Jackson was later spotted on the sideline staring into space as Young was talking to him. It's tough to say what exactly was happening since the cameras were only on him for a few seconds, but it sure appears that the situation is deteriorating week-by-week.
DEFENSE
* The Eagles' tackling was horrible all game (and has been horrible all season). It started with a 15-yard Marshawn Lynch touchdown run. Jamar Chaney had Lynch stopped, but didn't bring him down. The rest of the defense stopped. Nnamdi Asomugha was blocked into the end zone somehow and dove to the ground, avoiding any and all contact.
* The Eagles were moving all over the place before the ball was snapped on Lynch's 40-yard touchdown run. Jason Babin and Akeem Jordan both got blocked on the play. Babin got blocked on several big run plays. Lynch finished with 148 yards on 22 carries, averaging 6.7 yards per carry.
* On a third down in the fourth quarter, it looked like the Eagles would get off the field, but they were whistled for a holding penalty. The officials did not say who the penalty was on, but it looked like Chaney in the middle of the field on the tight end.
* Right around the 8-minute mark of the fourth quarter, with the Seahawks setting up to punt, the Eagles called a timeout because they had 12 men on the field.
* On third down in the first, Jackson hit Ben Obomanu for 26 yards. There was a huge hole in the Eagles' zone between Chaney and Kurt Coleman. Coleman was behind receivers all night on completions.
* Golden Tate made a great catch over Joselio Hanson for an 11-yard score in the third quarter.
* Nate Allen and Keenan Clayton both missed tackles on a 25-yard completion to Tate.
* Asomugha got dragged down by a Seahawks wide receiver in the second and left the game. He did not return. Reid said after the game it was a stinger/concussion.
* Tarvaris Jackson completed 13 of 16 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. Young threw more interceptions (4) than Jackson threw incompletions (3).

Reid has lost the team. I've never seen so many Eagles quit as I saw tonight. Shameful. No guts at all. Just shameful. NM Eagle fan- no heart, either.

Not sure which was worse: the Eagles' play, or the voice of Mike Mayock. Is he trying to be annoying? J H
Andy Reid does not deserve to come back next year...his team has quit on him. I did not even see the game and glad I did not. What a joke. Why is he such a "great coach"? Because he wins during the regular season and loses in the post-season? When does being someplace for 13 years gives you the right to stick around longer? "I have to do a better job of putting my players in the right position"...why don't you put yourself in the right position and just resign. What a chucklehead... CandyReidh8ter
The position Andy Reid puts his players in cannot be discussed in a family newspaper. rhawnhurster
All of the high priced free agents they signed this year looked as good as their 7th round linebackers Luriesucks
worst linebacking and safety play in the nfc , maybe the nfl. nate allen is a stone cold bust. snakeplissken
Firing Reid at this point, after the season, would be merciful. Quite simply, its the worst group of Eagles safeties I've ever seen. These guys make Terry Hoage look amazing. It is quite possible there are 15-20 players on this roster who are out of football within the next season or two, including Allen and Coleman. Murrayman- The entire 2010 draft may be out of football by opening day next year.
Firing Andy isn't enough...the beancounters picking personnel need to go too. Only in Philly...
defense quit an has all year on juan...andy couldnt motivate a highschool football team, and desean jackson has went into 12-year old mode sitting in the corner by himself...hire cowher an lets get things rolling sinsin1990- I agree we need a defensive head coach..bringing cowher to philly would be great..how times can andy say 'we need to put our players in better position'...juan, marty, and howie should be fired..
Fire Reid, MM, JC and let the new coach evaluate the thing with Djax. He's obviously quitbut it's management's fault--cheap as usual. Draft a QB & some BIG LB's , and go for the gold in '12. This season is probably the best thing that could have happened to this franchise. Time's yours, Andy. rad205

I asked this question last week, and I'll ask it again after watching Young play another bad game. Not that I was a big Kolb fan, but would the Eagles be better off if they didn't trade him. DRC has given the Birds nothing. Young won't be here next year, and for 5 million, was a terrible investment (and where was S.Smith tonight). And the fact that Vick is a constant in getting hurt, we need a reliable QB. Kolb had his moments here, but briefly. Just asking the question, because we are going to need a QB. watsonmr
It looks like the coaching staff has also quit. They were terrible. mario1239
Hopefully this will result in empty seats at the Linc. p-diddy
Desean Jackson is completely tanking his game. He dives rather than getting hit, he failed to aly a key block on a sideline play when Young had to scramble and could have gone farther with a block by Jackson, who stood and watched Young take the hit. And when he didn't even look back on that second half pass play, as he was jogging down the field, I gave up on him. He is a cancer, worse than TO was. Cut him now. He is not going to get more than he's getting now IF another team will sign him. He is immature, and has cost this team in every game far more than he has produced. Cut him and get it over with. Or bench him permanently. ngfs66
We should expect the Eagles to continue playing flag football. Everyone thinking of booking their vacation plans, so they don't want to get hurt. 4thand10
Is it true the Birds are moving to the Big East? 2ndNlong
did some people not get the memo?-
the eagles are sooo much better than the seahawks. bloodymess
Clemons got in Reid's face because Reid is a wuss. ej610
The only thing working for this team is the run game - which Reid refuses to do on a consistent basis. ej610
The offensive line looks great and the RB is a superstar. The tight ends are good. The WRs are inconsistent stars (when healthy and paid). The starting QB is electrifying sometimes. The defensive line gets after it. The corners are weak as Juan uses them (next year, use Asomugha one-on-one only!). The linebackers and safeties show flashes at most. Special teams have been adequate. So: focus on linebacker and safety in free agency and the draft, hire an experienced DC, let the rest of the team get healthy and gel as a TEAM -- not just a bunch of talent -- and indoctrinate everyone in the Eagles' way and let's learn from this season and get back in it in 2012. Leegles
Jackson needs to play or holdout, you can't do both. When he showed up after holding out he knew the only thing guaranteed was his $600,000. From Reid all the way down to the 53 active players, no one deserves a pass but it's apparent some worked a lot harder than others. Joefl
Shiel, you are being too kind. For all the Asante haters out there. A few points. Tom Brady when asked about him said why would i throw at Asante Samuel ? Last night and most of the season, when i team needs a hot read or key play, they throw at Namdi, who is all hat and no cattle. When Pete the cheat, ceaselessly threw for a TD at kneel down time, Asante made the play that said not on my watch. He has his faults, but is better than Namdi and DRC combined. Time for Cole and Babin to see less reps. Babin a dumb one trick pony. We need 2 safeties and 3 linebackers and back-ups for them. Send Vick/young on their way. Time to clean the nest. oldBird
Mario1239 is right the coaches look like they quit too! CLEAN HOUSE! Coaches/Linebackers DBs and JACKSON, MACLIN and SMITH!!! Zeedog
Andy needs to get Watkins in a better position to perform in the UFC. pedge
DeSean ruined the offense and Assante did same to defense......both are cancers!!!! recGUY- We gonna work hard, and continue to work hard and you will see, all of you will see that I know what I'm doing in a few weeks..these guys are going to get it. - Juan Catillo
Leo Durocher said it, and it's true. Nice guys finish last. Juan may be a nice guy and a hard worker, but he's an ineffective DC. He was also ineffective as an O-line coach. He's got to go, and the Eagles need a GOOD defensive coordinator. Not so concerned about getting rid of Andy unless we get a Cowher type guy to replace him. The talent is there on this team (with the exception of linebacker and safety). Even with those deficiencies, we've got the talent to be a playoff contender. All those missed tackles all year? That is a coaching fault. Replace Castillo, and we'll get an immediate improvement. Replace Andy? I'm not so sure. The front office guys? Don't sweat it, they don't have that much influence. Thgey got the talent here, it was simply not used effectively. dlscholt
Not only to eagles need to man up, but so do their blogger fans! A lot of trash talking was on this site when this dream team was formed. Now the Cowboys and their 5 SUPERBOWLS can win division. Eddiesbar
Why was the penalty for Offensive PI not called before nnamdi got hurt? beerflow
Andy Reid has completely lost this team. There is only one solution when a Head Coach loses his team. Find a new Head Coach. And let the new Head Coach decide who he wants (and doesn't want). And go from there. Please Fire Andy!!! Now wouldn't be soon enough. TheBIG
@Eddiesbar: Super Bowl? What's that? Bruce87036
