Westbrook defends Reid, McNabb

POSTED: Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 9:42 AM
Brian Westbrook defended Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb during his weekly radio show. (AP)
On his weekly radio program on ESPN 950, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook gave a vote of confidence to his quarterback and head coach.

Here was Westbrook's response when asked how he would respond to fans who think it's time for Andy Reid to go:

"Bad idea, bad idea. ... I believe he's a very good coach. You have to say...who are you gonna get? Who's gonna be better than coach Reid? Who's gonna have a better winning percentage out there that you can potentially go get than coach Reid? Who's gonna run this team better? Who's gonna be a better leader? Who's gonna take more of the blame on their shoulders? And I personally find it hard to find somebody that's going to do a better job than Andy Reid."

Westbrook was also asked about Donovan McNabb, and said that the players in the locker room have not lost confidence in the starting quarterback:

"I've seen the different things that Donovan has been able to do. I've seen him have bad games and come back that next game and be an MVP-caliber quarterback. That's what I expect from him this week. Donovan McNabb is not the problem here. He's part of the solution."

Asked whether he appreciates Reid not calling out specific players and always taking the blame, here's what Westbrook said:

"He said at the beginning of the season, 'I'm not going to throw you guys underneath the bus' and he would appreciate if we don't throw him underneath the bus either. ..."

"I think he's a great coach and I respect him a lot and it takes a lot for a guy to go up there and say 'It's my fault' ...to take all the blame on yourself when you know it's not all of your fault. It takes a big man to do that and (laugh) Coach Reid is a big man."

And, of course, Westbrook was asked about knowing the rules of overtime. He said he knew the rules, and McNabb's admission didn't affect the way the team played:

"I think a lot of people are asking, basically to say, Donovan didn't do everything he could to help this team win in the overtime period cause he thought there was going to be another period. And I couldn't disagree with that any more. ... We're trying to score, no matter what. The bottom line is, offensively, we're trying to score."

Somebody said Buckhalter. I can't imagine for the life of me why he isn't used more. Never mind, I know. He' productive when given the chance to run and Andy doesn't like to run.

Nobody throw anybody under the bus and we will all just continue to be paid very well for shoddy work. Brilliant except that dog won't hunt in Philly.

Westbrook has produced in the past and even if he seems to be overpaid now .. it's "payback" for past great deeds. Sure Reid has to go though and he's looking more and more foolish as time goes by. And McNabb's not knowing is being over-blown. Not that I say stick with him after this year .. but all in all his play on the field been more good then bad for Philly through the years. And his personal gaffs are over-blown - he's a decent guy. I remember how Cole Hammels was criticized for not wanting to pitch with 3 days rest and now he's a hero. Well it probably won't happen for Donovan but let's keep a little perspective here.

Westbrook is injured. The Eagles have had Lorenzo Booker wear his jersey in recent games in an effort to fool the other team and the fans. The real Brian Westbrook is practicing at home for his shot at Dancing with the Stars.

All of Andy's and Donovan's apologies, thumping their breasts (my bad) and their excuses all sound like Bill Clinton when he was caught with Lewinsky and then lied about it to a grand jury. It all depends on what IS IS. We got the shaft then and are getting it now.

ahahaha... "westbrook needs to go too." ahaha why do you even bother posting? the guy that everyone thought was the greatest thing to ever wear green is now being mentioned in the usual trade/cut him talk? A. he just got an enormous deal. cant cut or trade him. remember all that "he deserves it, now pay him you cheap eagles?" B. most yards from scrimmage last year in the nfl in 15 games. C. one of very few players in the nfl that can score on any play from anywhere on the field at any time... and this is not time for rebuilding. they're not detroit, oakland, kc, or cinci. a lull for 3 years of rebuilding wastes good years of westbrook, samuel, gaither, bradley, patterson, bunkley, cole, s brown, mikell, and d jackson.

Westbrook is the problem, it's because they want him to be the only weapon!!! Give him a break every once in awhile. Everyone saw how bad they were when he wasn't in the games. Hey Donovan!!! RUN!!!Keeps the D honest. Get another big back in here, or here's an idea USE BUCKHALTER!!!It's not rocket science!!

The fact that Westbrook had to carry us for so many years tell u alot about the offense and the talent we have had over there years-Now we are going to milk poor little SJACKSON- It goes back to recruiting-Which needs to be resolved later-it's to late for that now -So we have to deal with what we have and that’s why the coaches needs to step up AR-you know what McNabb can do -Heck you have been together for 10 years as well as the O-line and BW -So PUT THEM IN PLACES WHERE THEY CAN SUCCEED –don’t just talk about it in press conferences –Stop running the same plays you run every week and if they do choose those plays-choose the plays that are successful- Stay with the run and motivate the team--Who is that leader of that locker room--Where is the screamer or the hype man on that team-.

Westbrooks' comments are bogus: ["who are you gonna get? Who's gonna be better than coach Reid?] Give someone new a shot. A fresh approach is clearly needed. ... ["Who's gonna have a better winning percentage out there that you can potentially go get than coach Reid?] Pay attention Westbrook! The Eagles are a .500 team since the SB loss. Your only sustained drive came when Garcia was the QB. ... [Who's gonna run this team better? Who's gonna be a better leader? ] Pick a name. Chancses are, he'll be better. You know Reid will be more of the same last 4 yrs. ... [Who's gonna take more of the blame on their shoulders?" ] So! The players are content that Reid covers up for them every week. Shouldering the blame, and fixing the situation, are two different things.
