Eagles add undrafted CB; more draft grades

Some things to get to today:

* One name that wasn't on the list of undrafted free agents the Eagles sent out yesterday is Arizona cornerback Devin Ross. But according to the Arizona Daily Star, he signed with the Eagles on Monday and hopes to make the roster on special teams.

"The Eagles got a hell of a player," said his agent, Harold Lewis. "There's a reason why he was the best player in the state of California when he came out of high school. There's a reason he was a starting corner with the Arizona Wildcats, and why he led the team in tackles (in 2009). And there's a reason why the Eagles and other teams wanted him bad."

Lewis also represents current Eagles Leonard Weaver and Ellis Hobbs.

* Speaking of the cornerbacks, I just realized yesterday that I've been leaving Dimitri Patterson out of the discussion when writing about them. How come you people didn't call me out for that? Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting he's the answer. But Patterson did play last season in a variety of different roles. He was called on to serve as a sixth DB and cover the opposing tight end in a couple games (against the 49ers and Falcons). I'd guess he figures into the competition somehow, considering how thin the Eagles are.

* One last word on the cornerbacks (I know, you're tired of my griping). I was thinking: If the Eagles were to add a cornerback to their roster, what kind of player would they be looking for? Someone who's durable, a leader, a good tackler opposite Asante Samuel. Someone like Sheldon Brown perhaps? I almost wonder if they made a deal with Brown before last season - play well in 2009, don't complain about your contract and we'll take care of you before next season. Just thinking out loud here, but I have a hard time believing that this team - the way it's currently constructed - is better off without Brown.

* Our friend Wes Bunting of the National Football Post is up with his draft grades. Wes gives the Eagles a B:

A deep class that offers some intriguing bodies on all levels. I wasn't overly impressed with some of their mid-round picks, but getting guys like DE Brandon Graham and FS Nathaniel Allen early and values like DT Jeff Owens and DE Ricky Sapp late makes this group tough to pick on.

* Nolan Narwocki of Pro Football Weekly gives the Eagles an A-minus:

Good value was found in Rounds 5-7, as WR Riley Cooper (notes) could compete for a roster spot and ILB Jamar Chaney (notes) and FS Kurt Coleman (notes) could potentially help on special teams. While completely retooling the roster, the Eagles easily landed four starters and found a lot of quality depth, although the jury remains out on the decision to deal McNabb.

* And finally, in case you didn't see it, Tony Hunt has resurfaced with the Giants - kind of. He's scheduled to attend their mini-camp for a tryout. Hunt was a third-round pick by the Eagles in 2007 but never caught on.

Great story on Hunt. My friend and loyal MTC reader Lemur received an authentic Hunt jersey from his fiancee when the Penn State product joined the Birds. Lemur, a PSU grad and Eagles fan, was a big Hunt supporter, and was devastated when the Eagles released him.

He now has an authentic No. 29 Hunt jersey and can't get any use out of it. What should he do? Replace the name on the back with "Allen" for new Eagles DB Nate Allen who will wear that number? Try to sell the thing on E-Bay?

Option No. 1 would be to leave it as is because as the years go by, it becomes funnier and funnier. Although years down the road, if people see me wearing it, they will just think my last name is Hunt, which is not good because I am anti-personalized jersey.
