Instant reaction: Booker, Buckley, TE situation

POSTED: Saturday, September 5, 2009, 7:36 PM

Just saw the list of cuts for the Eagles. Some quick impressions:

** I'm glad they kept Eldra Buckley and admitted their mistake with Lorenzo Booker. Buckley clearly outplayed him in training camp and during the preseason. The knock on Buckley was he couldn't produce as a receiver, but it's something he can continue to work on. And he showed he can be an asset on special teams. So they gave up a fourth-round pick for Booker and it didn't work out. No need to be stubborn and and try to force it at this point.

** Seven wide receivers, huh? You have to wonder if it will stay that way for long. The Eagles kept Reggie Brown, Hank Baskett and Brandon Gibson. Throughout the preseason, everyone (including yours truly) has speculated on which guy would be the odd man out. And it turns out none of them are headed anywhere -- yet. Don't be surprised if the Eagles aren't done making moves. Could be more coming this week.

** Speaking of which, Michael Vick on the exempt list? Really? I can't imagine that is going to last. You have to have the guy on the practice field and get him ready to contribute when he's ready to return in Week 3. The guess is that they'll continue to shop A.J. Feeley and hopefully add Vick to the roster in the near future.

** ESPN's Adam Schefter Tweeted earlier today that a Feeley to the Patriots deal, which has been rumored, will not happen. And it appears that he's right on. New England did make some moves at tight end, but the Eagles were not involved. The Patriots acquired tight end Michael Matthews from the Giants. They also released TE Alex Smith and sent David Thomas to the Saints for a seventh-round pick, according to reports.

** The Raiders released former Eagles QB Jeff Garcia.

** Full list of Eagles cuts: Booker, Danny Amendola, Eugene Bright, Tank Daniels, Kyle Eckel, Paul Fanaika, Josh Gaines, Curtis Gatewood, Mike Gibson, Jack Ikegwuonu, Dan Klecko, Reshard Langford, Marcus Mailei, Rob Myers, Dallas Reynolds, Bryan Smith, Matt Schobel, Matt Wilhelm, Trae Williams, Willie Williams.

** Amendola did everything he could to make the team. Rooting for the guy to catch on somewhere.

** Who says the final preseason game doesn't matter? Curtis played his way on to the roster as the second tight end behind Brent Celek.

** Eckel was a good story, but Leonard Weaver is a Pro Bowl caliber fullback.

** The 2008 draft is shaping up to be an interesting one. The Eagles cut Smith and Ikegwuonu, third- and fourth-round picks, respectively. DeSean Jackson was a great pick, Quintin Demps will be counted on to start, and Joe Mays will be in the mix at linebacker.

** OK, that's it from here. Chime in on what you mamke of the Eagles' roster moves.

wkd - the best thing Philly football coverage has going is on vacation. Cut him a break.

Don't forget that Mike Gibson was a 2008 pick as well. Also I surely hope that Demps isn't the starter, if he starts after that display on Thursday night.. I'm truly scared.

coatesville: Who's Michael Gibson? Brandon Gibson is the WR but I don't see a Michael Gibson on the 53 man roster. if you're talking about Brandon Gibson, he's a rookie meaning he was drafted in 2009 not 2008.

Mike Gibson is an OL who joined the team in 2008 (if not earlier).

Leonard Pope!!!! A healthy 6'8" tight end only three years into his career. Just cut from AZ. Get'im. There are a lot of quality players getting cut, including our own. There are sure to be a whole bunch of players in Canada this year.

Hey albertpa, why TWO bags of Sun Chips? And cheddar? The french onion are the only good ones. I'd have to negotiate some PB Kandycakes and u got a deal!... And Mike Gibson was cut (see above cut list) but no word on Debbie Gibson they're lips are sealed on that.

@Knebman, you'd love to pick up Dominic Rhodes? Did you just notice that he was cut. By Buffalo? A team that is desperate for offense? Why do you suppose they did that?

second round pick trevor laws came out of the 2008 draft also. if the eagles trade for a mlb, mays might be gone. he looked lost at the position durning preseason. demps is young and talks a lot. he has to learn to use his speed and not overrun receivers/runners. i believe he'll learn. he has a tough attitude learned from dawk.

Hope to see Jack Ikegwuonu perhaps land on a practice squad think there is potential for him,I think there is room for improvement perhaps in the LB corps ,not sure why they did not try to move Bryan Smith to a strong side LB and develop him like a speed rush LB ..I dunno I don't evaluate talent just make obsurd opionions..

Keeping Buckley on the team as the third running back was the way to go. He was far superior in comparrison to Booker. Plus if you kept Booker you'd have three very similar running backs. Buckley is a good change of pace from Westbrook and McCoy.

Did you guy know Peters was a TE in college? They can use him there some on the goal line next to the Andrews Bros and overpower any D-line in footbal at the point of attack.

Hopefully they can get Amendola on the Practice Squad so when they inevitably dump Brown, and K. Curtis can't stay healthy, he get's his chance.

Rhodes seems like a very good guy to get. They can carry 5 receivers instead of 7, so there is room for another rb. Overall, the Eagles didn't keep anyone who can't play. They're probably shopping Reggie Brown, who seems like extra weight. Injuries on the OL and MLB make for a very questionable season, and it's not clear if Sean Jones is going to be good enough at safety. Demps doesn't look ready. Anything better than 8-8 could be called good. Next year could be a very good year if they get healthy and keep a similar roster.
