The Eagles' best offseason move

POSTED: Saturday, May 15, 2010, 10:40 AM

About to head out of town for the weekend for a family gathering, but wanted to get a quick post up first.

A publication recently asked me to answer a series of questions about the Eagles for their NFL preview magazine.

And there was one question that made me think a little longer than the others: What was the Eagles' best and worst offseason move?

For me, the worst was easy. If you're a frequent reader of MTC, you'll be able to guess it right away: trading Sheldon Brown to Cleveland.

Brown, when healthy, is an above-average corner. The options left now: starting Joselio Hanson, converting safeties Macho Harris or Marlin Jackson, starting rookie Trevard Lindley or hoping for a resurgence from Ellis Hobbs are far from sure things.

As for the best offseason move, I really struggled to find one. Who are the new players the team's added? Darryl Tapp, Ernie Smis, Jackson. Do any of those moves qualify? Nope.

What about the Donovan McNabb trade? While it seems like the majority of fans were on board with starting the Kevin Kolb era, I don't think that deal fits the mold either. It's not lik the Eagles received overwhelming compensation.

So I went with the selection of Brandon Graham and Nate Allen in the first two rounds of last month's draft. Is this choice contingent on those guys actually being able to play? Of course. But at least the Eagles addressed a couple areas of need - pass rush and safety.

I won't lie. It did feel like a bit of a stretch. But it was more a process of elimination than anything else.

So I ask you: What was the Eagles' best and worst move of the 2010 offseason?

Again, Why is Kolb in any comment containing winning, playoffs , McNabb, leadership, etc. You wanted 5 gone but don't try to make yourself feel confident by bringing up stuff you know nothing about. Leadership? 90% of fans didn't even know who Kevin Kolb was when he got drafted but now you know that he is a leader! As I said before hoping and wishing won't get you anywhere.

I've read some pretty dumb posts on here before, but lonewolf10 that was stupid (even for you).

Trading Sheldon was the worst move. Going with Kolb was the best move, though an obvious one. It may not mean extra wins this season, but the team was not Super Bowl bound with Donovan anyway.

Trading McNabb was a good move because they got something for him. They wouldn't have paid him enought to keep him after the final season on the contract. We will all see how Kolb does, but it wasn't dumb to do it now. Losing Sheldon is huge, they are running out of beasts in the backfield. Funny how the Westbrooks name isn't mentioned, even if he played 9 games, that is a lot of yards to replace.

lonewolf, I haven't posted on here in over a year and I see you're still just as ignorant! Yeah Philly, let's trade a 5-time Pro Bowl QB who only went to the playoffs 8 of 11 years. Okay now you're talking about Mr. Tackle himself Asante Samuel. They ought to create a stat just for him: TD's given up/INTs. Give me a solid cover corner any day of the week, kinda like Sheldon Brown! Well one thing is certain: Either Philly will be very good, or very bad...painfully I believe it will be the latter.

Yeah Bill? Back to normal. Sitting home watching the playoffs because that's the only normal you know. The Eagles haven't won nothing in 50 yrs. Idiot

Hey wiff, when you are drunk and fall in the woods, do you make a sound? I think the best off season move was wiff getting a stalker. hahahahahahahaa. And one smarter than he is...well, that didn't really take much did it?

I like the pickup of coaches for special teams annd secondary. Eagle's sslected 1.5 starters (graham is .5 because he won't play every down) in the 5 picks? They selected another TE when they needed help at corner and DT. They selected more receivers (3), on a team with no need for that position. The paid 3-for-1 for Graham and gave up the opportunity for K. Wlison who went to the jets at 26. You think Jet's Coach Ryan knows D-talent?! I agree with the article, in brief, they wasted picks in multiple ways (fdraft and offseason trades). But they did lower the payroll by stocking up on late round picks. Any coincidence that strategy was driven by money objectives - NONE!!! Roseman blew this draft. Andy allowing McNabb to go to the Redskins is ridiculous. Eagle Fans, prepare to take a giant step backwards as the new regime of Banner and Roseman - money before talent - have completely taken control.

The worst move was the Sheldon Brown deal, but not because Sheldon was very good but because we failed to address corner as well as we could have in the draft. There were several corners in the 4th round we could have taken, like Ansah from IUP who went to the Cowboys. The best move was getting rid of the worm killing, air guitarist, locker room cancer McNabb. The entire team, from the few veterans around to the coaching staff, seem so much happier with McNabb gone. I am not so sure that Kevin Kolb can't be considered the best QB in the division....how high would you guys rate McNabb, Romo, or Eli Manning? Here is a list, in no particular order, of 10 better QB's than what is in the NFC East: Brady, Peyton Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Rivers, Favre, Flacco, Sanchez, Ryan, Roethlisberger. I'd rather try "upside" than proven mediocrity.

The best move(s) were releasing our beloved players who frankly were on the down side of their career. We will miss them (Sheldon too Sheil...NFL people say that he can still hit but just can't run) but it was time for them to go.... The worst move was not signing an Offensive Lineman...we have a lot of guys but not enough proven guys.

rickah88 & tpizza we had a team built for multiple Super Bowls but the team was scared to cut or trade the one position that held us back for 11 years. Now with a legit QB this team will go where it needs to go. If Kolb had the speedy Todd Pinkston and the sure handed Freddie Mitchell they would have both been Pro Bowlers. McNabb held them back then gave future employers of those players bad referrals Which was why all of McNabb's receivers who left failed to start a single game after they left the Eagles. Now under the guidance of a true leader and All-American Kolb will make Maclin, Celek and D-Jax hall of famers. This was the best EASTER EVER! J-E-S-U-S WOULD BE PROUD!

Best move.... hiring two great coaches Jauron will really help the defense and April will put the ST in the top 5.
