TE Cook seeing interest from Eagles
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
Add Jared Cook's name to the list of tight ends the Eagles could potentially be targeting in next weekend's draft.
Cook has not had an official visit with the Eagles, but said the Birds are showing interest in him.
“I met with pretty much the whole coaching staff at the combine," he told me during a phone interview last week. "They were great guys. I just got a good vibe from them when I walked in the room. They really welcomed me.”
A 6-foot-5, 246-pound South Carolina product, Cook was a standout at the Scouting Combine, running a 4.50 40-yard dash, the fastest time among tight ends. He was also the top performer in the vertical jump.
He said he's visited with the Bills and also had trips scheduled to Oakland and New Orleans. Representatives from the Rams, Dolphins, Jaguars and Browns have also traveled to see Cook.
Eagles tight ends coach Tom Melvin attended his Pro Day.
One of the things he and others wanted to know was if Cook would be able to get it done as a blocker at the NFL level.
"They want to know about my blocking ability, see if I could actually block," Cook said. "I just told them I’m a willing blocker and I can get the job done. There’s just some technique things.
"Coach [Steve] Spurrier had a spread offense. We weren’t really required to do much blocking."
Cook was recruited as a wide receiver, but was asked to switch to tight end during his sophomore season. He had 37 catches for 573 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 15.5 yards per reception last season.
He's not sure where he's going to end up, but Cook said Philadelphia would be a "great place" to play.
"It is hard to tell because everyone is pulling out poker cards, and not showing much," he said.
Eagles GM Tom Heckert was asked about the possibility of drafting a tight end when he met with reporters last week.
"It’s a very interesting group because now in college football with all this spread stuff, there are a lot (of tight ends) you never see on the line of scrimmage ever," he said, per Paul Domowitch of the Daily News. "At that position, what you’re looking at is a lot of big receivers. You just don’t see them block."
Here are some video highlights of Cook.
- PETERS!!!
Eagles Suck! Big Ragu
We got Peters baby!!! now draft moreno.... Cook is going to be real good but who cares we barely use the tight end bc we stink at play calling fman727
According to SI, the Eagles will trade #28 plus a 3rd rounder for Peters and it will be completed today. KGKoons- a 4th rounder plus 28th
Hasanmahmdamdnadsdad....can you read? #28th....a 4th and a pick in 2010. Dvs Mind
Cook is not a tight end he is just a big reciever. In fact I would not be surprised to see a team use him excusively as a reciever. dawggone
Birds need a TE that can block this season. They already have a pass cathcing TE in Celek. chasing history
Comment removed.
I have watched Cook throughout his career at South Carolina. He is the real deal and the Eagles should grab him in the second round. I like Celek, but Cook is a future Pro-Bowler. jdogle1
coffman is also slow...Cook is a better fit crohnkiller
Comment removed.- so Philly 10 what you want is another celek? The purpose of getting a tight end this year is to get someone who can block and catch... just not catch Dawk20
6'5" 246lbs and runs a 4.50 40! this guy could be a beast of a slot receiver. with his size and speed he should be able to pull in mc5's errant passes, break tackles then torch most safeties in the league or at least run over them. jbuck1979
Workout wonder. Never heard of him. Sounds like a project. Why not grab a guy who actually blocked as a tight end in college - not someone who just says he's willing to block. Besides, he'll probably be gone by late 2nd round. I smell trade down with 21 now that the O-Line in solidified. 21 is to early for Donald Brown, too late for Moreno and I just don't see them taking Beanie Wells (thank god for that). tdcuse
AR will probably trade out of the first round anyways... Eagles4SB
Two words at TE: "Bear Pasco!" Monster from Fresno State who will be a pro-bowler!!! Can take and deliver hits unlike any TE we've had since KJ!! IdahoMoose
This guy really doesn't look that good, and not blocking = bad. We really don't need another one of those. Why not just get Tony Gonzalez for one of our 3rd or 4th rounders. Sure he is old, but he has a couple good years left. Known commodities are better than a hit or miss second rounder. Imagine if McNabb had Gonzo and Chad Johnson to throw to, instead of Hank Baskett and Celek. Dear lord, let's get real Eagles and bring in some legit people. DrZ88
Brilliant analysis, Big Ragu...when do you get your pulitzer, idiot. igglegreen
LJ Smith was big and fast too.. (and couldn't block) johnnysanz3
