Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair has been shot and killed, according to several reports.

Absolutely stunning news.

Probably like many of you, I was taking in the Phillies-Mets game at a friend's barbecue this afternoon. I drove over to another friend's house to watch the end of the game when he broke the news.

Details are still emerging, but here's some of what we've cobbled together:

** McNair suffered a gunshot wound to his head at a condo complex in downtown Nashville.

** When police arrived at the scene this afternoon, they found two people dead. McNair, and a female who has not been identified.

** McNair was 36.

McNair was a three-time Pro Bowler and former league MVP in 2003. He led the Titans to the Super Bowl in 2000.

I worked for baltimoresun.com during McNair's time with the Ravens. He'll be best known for his toughness and ability to play through injuries. A competitor through and through.

And of course, I'll always remember him throwing the pass that ended up just short of the end zone against the Rams in the 2000 Super Bowl.

Thoughts and prayers go out to McNair's family during this difficult time.

Feel free to share your thoughts and memories.

OK, he was a great competitor and a decent QB. But as a society, we tend to view professional athletes as role models when that is simply not justified. For the next week, we'll get to hear about what a great guy McNair was, despite having a girlfriend on the side and, until the rest of the story comes out, having a 50/50 chance of being a murderer.

phillygwm - Half of the married men in the U.S. have a girlfriend or girlfriends on the side. McNair was shot multiple times. How does that possibly make him a murderer?

I haven't read anything about McNair being shot multiple times, I read that it was a murder-suicide. I have not read anything specifying which person pulled the trigger (thus, I said 50/50 chance). Perhaps you can cite where 1) half of the married men in the US have a girlfriend on the side and 2) that McNair was shot multiple times.

Whether half the married men in America have a girlfriend or not, it is not a capital offense. Your response, phillygwn, seems to suggest that what happened is justified because of it. Also just finished listening to the police press conference here in Nashville, and he was indeed shot multiple times and his friend had one gunshot wound to the head. While it is certainly within the realm of possibilty for him to be a murderer, even this preliminary and sketchy explaination of the known facts argues stongly against drawing such a conclusion.

Very sad! One of the very few warriors to play the QB position. It was a pleasure watching this guy play.

I'll never forget him willing the Titans down the field on that final drive in the Super Bowl against the Rams. On the second-to-last play, he should have been sacked about 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Instead he got the two St. Louis linemen pursuing him to collide with each other, freeing himself up to fire a pass to Kevin Dyson at the 10-yard line, setting up one final play to tie the game...

In response to phillygwm: Police found McNair, 36, and Sahel Kazemi, 20, fatally shot in a condominium in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, Saturday afternoon after receiving a phone call about an injured person. McNair was shot twice in the head and twice in the chest, while Kazemi was shot once in the head, Nashville Metropolitan Police Department Spokesman Don Aaron told reporters Sunday after announcing the autopsies were complete. *source CNN.COMhttp://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/07/05/mcnair.shooting/index.html From wikipedia: Recent studies reveal that 45-55% of married women and 50-60% of married men engage in extramarital sex at some time or another during their relationship (Atwood & Schwartz, 2002 - Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy)
