Statements from Lurie and Reid

POSTED: Saturday, February 28, 2009, 4:05 PM

I just posted on Brian Dawkins' departure so be sure to check out that entry, which includes a YouTube highlight video of No. 20.

But this statement from the Eagles just popped in my inbox. Here are statements from Jeffrey Lurie and Andy Reid on Dawkins' departure.

From Lurie:

“Brian Dawkins has been one of the pillars of this franchise for 13 years. He helped lead us to five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. Brian embodies everything you look for in a professional athlete and human being. I have been fortunate to witness his impeccable character, his passion for the game of football and his commitment to being the best player he could be. I look forward to continuing a close relationship with him once his playing days are over. His legacy as an Eagle will last forever and will ultimately land him in Canton as a Hall of Famer.”

From Reid:

“Brian is one of the best players in franchise history and one of the most popular players to ever play in the city of Philadelphia. The Eagles organization, as well as the entire fan base, will miss him not only as a player but as a tremendous person. This is the toughest part of my job, no question. He gave this city 13 years of emotional, energetic football. We wish Brian and his family nothing but the best as he continues his career in Denver.”

As difficult as it might be, please try to refrain from using obscenities with your comments.

Mr Lurie & Mr Reid, you sirs are morons. You care nothing for the team or the fans. You have all the cap room needed to ensure that Dawk remained where he belongs, here. You talk a big, bogus game of the gold standard and wanting to win but you do little to make it happen. As long as the organization finishes 500 or better, you are assured that the fan base will continue to buy tickets, hats, shirts, etc. That is what you aim for, good enough to keep selling but not enough to actually win. Congrats, you accomplished your goals. You idiots!

I am as saddened and disapointed with this move as most people are. I would understand the move if Dawk had slowed down this year and/or the Eagles had a backup plan. What is it? Quintin Demps? Don't get your hopes up Eagles fans that this organization is going to spend that money left under the cap. Sure they will sign another offensive lineman and maybe defensive lineman, but there will be no big trade for Boldin or signing of Housh either. They will tell you what they always do, that they are happy with their team and look to make any other improvements through the draft. Don't expect them to keep both 1st round draft picks as well, because that means they will have to pay those players 1st rd money. I never thought I would see the day when the Phillies owners would spend money while the Eagles' owner keeps it in his grubby lil pockets. I really think Lurie, Banner, and Reid want the fan base to hate them. Don't spend the money on Dawk Jeff, but it's okay to raise ticket prices you cheap SOB!!

Maybe they'll feel guilty about letting Dawk go and do something drastic to make it up to the Eagles fans....like acquiring Anquan Boldin!

This organization will NEVER be forgiven and will NEVER live this one down no matter the spin. Philly sports lost a hero today, good luck Dawk, we love ya.

OK Andy I will refrain from profanity. The fact that you are a idiot may be prophetic but it is not profane. You do not understand nor will you ever understand the leadership that Dawk brought to your team but you are about to as you stand on the sidelines with your Color Codes clipboard. If you think that you will fill the leadership void you are also ignorant. Don't count on Donavan either. It is tough for a team to follow a guy who pukes in the huddle every time the going gets tough.

The shouldn't have matched the contract Denver gave. I love Dawk as much as anyone, but that contract was stupidly high. 5 years? Really? Hadn't they watched his film?

As frustrating as it's been to be an Eagles fan, seeing beloved players come and go, Laurie has made them a team who consistently competes at the highest levels, and now the Birds are respected and feared instead of being a door mat like they used to be under Braman. Dawk will be greatly missed, but life goes on.

Dawk and Buck, both's better days are behind them. No disrespect to either and I appreciate all they've done for the Eagles, but I think these cap dollars are better spent elsewhere. Check back in 2 years and I think you'll all be in agreement.

Brian Dawkins did what was best for him. Isn't that the only point? It is not about Reid or Lurie. They made the offer they thought they should, and Dawkins wanted more and got more. So be it. There was an Eagles team before Brian Dawkins and there will still be a team. It is time to move on. Football is as much a business as it is a sport. Brian Dawkins is simply handling his own business and that is enough for me. Respect Brian Dawkins for making the best decision for him and his family. I wish him well and the Eagles as well.

Dave Spadaro, what a homer. He should be the stitching on Lurie and Reid's underwear. It's okay to like your home team, but this guy cries out for help. He's probably sniffing Bdawk's jockstrap as we speak.

I know I will be rooting for B.DAWK now matter who he plays for. Without him and Runyan who is going to be the heart of this team? McNabb? I doubt it.....

What an absolute kick in the gut to not have Dawk retire as an Eagle. Hey, come to Philly, play your heart out, ruin your body playing the game of football for the fans, knock yourself out for an ownership that will give you almost all of the tools you need for a Superbowl but leave the team just crippled enough to sell out seats but not win it all, and in the end, in return for all of your blood, sweat and tears, we're going to cut you a couple of years shy of what could have been a great swan song year and a sure trip to Canton. Pathetic.....
