Rex Ryan on Jean-Gilles' surgery
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
The Eagles revealed last week that offensive lineman Max Jean-Gilles underwent lap-band surgery in April to get his weight down.
The announcement caught reporters and fans by surprise. The Eagles told the Daily News' Les Bowen that they were unaware of any athlete having undergone the surgery before.
One guy who can offer perspective on what this might mean for Jean-Gilles, and what the recovery process might be, is Jets coach Rex Ryan.
Ryan underwent the same procedure six weeks ago and has reportedly lost 40 pounds.
"There are times you feel sluggish after you have the surgery," he told NFL.com's Steve Wyche. I was at work three days after (the surgery), but I wasn't having to run around and block somebody. There is a foreign object in your body, so he better be careful he's doing everything exactly right.
"I wish him the best. I know I feel great, and really, it's been nothing. Not a problem at all. I just never thought that it would be considered for anybody while they're playing."
Jean-Gilles told Wyche he has lost 15 pounds in the first week after the surgery. Click here for my thoughts on Jean-Gilles' potential role with the Birds in 2010, assuming he's healthy.

* Hey, look. Another 2011 mock draft. ESPN.com's Todd McShay has the Eagles ending up with the 20th pick and selecting BYU offensive tackle Matt Reynolds. Andy Reid was unable to pick up a BYU guy in this year's draft.
* FoxSports.com's Peter Schrager lists the top 10 players who have come close, but never won a Super Bowl. Not surprisingly, three ex-Eagles made the list: Terrell Owens (10th), Brian Dawkins (third) and Donovan McNabb (first).

Another get slim quick scheme. Why can't a professional athlete just eat normally and EXERCISE???? Lazy, lazy, lazy but I hope it doesn't blow up in his gut. kcruel
Yeah, I'm sorry but if you are a professional athlete and can't lose the weight through diet and exercise?....I'm not feeling good about that. tkotanch
You have to realize that this guy is paid to be big. But he can't get too big and he can't get too small. He needs to maintain the size, while still keeping the strength, quickness and what not. It's not easy for a man that big to lose weight on his own while keeping his strength, quickness and mobility at top shape. For someone like me or you, exercise and normal eating would work. But for an athlete like that, when your talking 300 plus pounds, it works a little different. EagleBeliever
Jean-Gilles sounds like Shawn Andrews without the talent or the personality. Also, didn't the Eagles pick up Dallas Reynolds from BYU this year? Granted, he was an undrafted free agent, not a draft pick, but Andy did get a BYU guy... jrw723
Not so much lazy. More the inability to say no to food. That "I'm full" signal is either being ignored or malfunctioning in his body. So I don't see how the band is going to stop that behavior. PhillyFanSouth- When someone gets to the point he did, it would take a supreme effort - boot-camp like - to take the weight off. And even at that the success rate would be low. People with Jean-Gilles' problem are frequently pre-diabetic or diabetic and this surgery is the surest way of reversing those illnesses. He may be at that point now, and it may have been given to him as an option. Bob1
Personal discipline in eating habits and exercise is the answer for all athletes and all of us......the inability to have self control and self discipline will betray ability and lead to ultimate failure... nuggett
I guess the Eagles don't consider golfers as athletes, but John Daly had lap band surgery. fammarlin
That much extra fat can come off quick with propper diet and exersize. Like most obese people, the man has no self discipline. Not a good idea to take regular beatings from 300lb men while having a plastic band rapped around your stomach. Klambake
I agree with the posters, they have it right here, self-discipline. He can even eat as often as he wants, it just can't be stinkin potato chips, cheeseburgers and french fries every time he munches. I would presume the weight room and practice would be enough exercise, his problem is the diet. I am surprised the Eagles allowed this type of cosmetic surgery on one of their athletes. -not bob levy remyy- His career may be over, because he is going to lose way too much weight.
Don't the Eagles have nutritionists and dieticians on their medical/training staff? For the amount of money they invest in these guys, I would want to control everything that they put into their bodies. Also, isn't a major unwritten rule that the team has to approve or at least be aware of all surgeries? I know Thomas Tapeh got cut in Minnesota for not telling the team about a surgery he had. realzeel- Guess we should ignore the MDs and TX Specialists that feel different about the blame for obesity - the Philly bloggers/experts have spoken.
I agree realzeel, youd think they would have the training staff help with this kind of stuff before it has to get to a procedure like this. I find it strange to get that done while playing pro ball, but maybe he can heal in time and care for himself and still play, I cant claim to know. peteike
Just throwing this out......Albert Haynsworth. We traded them McNabb. How cool would it be if Haynsworth played here and demolished McNabb when we palyed them. bossrjc
