The Eagles revealed last week that offensive lineman Max Jean-Gilles underwent lap-band surgery in April to get his weight down.

The announcement caught reporters and fans by surprise. The Eagles told the Daily News' Les Bowen that they were unaware of any athlete having undergone the surgery before.

One guy who can offer perspective on what this might mean for Jean-Gilles, and what the recovery process might be, is Jets coach Rex Ryan.

Ryan underwent the same procedure six weeks ago and has reportedly lost 40 pounds.

"There are times you feel sluggish after you have the surgery," he told NFL.com's Steve Wyche. I was at work three days after (the surgery), but I wasn't having to run around and block somebody. There is a foreign object in your body, so he better be careful he's doing everything exactly right.

"I wish him the best. I know I feel great, and really, it's been nothing. Not a problem at all. I just never thought that it would be considered for anybody while they're playing."

Jean-Gilles told Wyche he has lost 15 pounds in the first week after the surgery. Click here for my thoughts on Jean-Gilles' potential role with the Birds in 2010, assuming he's healthy.

* Hey, look. Another 2011 mock draft. ESPN.com's Todd McShay has the Eagles ending up with the 20th pick and selecting BYU offensive tackle Matt Reynolds. Andy Reid was unable to pick up a BYU guy in this year's draft.

* FoxSports.com's Peter Schrager lists the top 10 players who have come close, but never won a Super Bowl. Not surprisingly, three ex-Eagles made the list: Terrell Owens (10th), Brian Dawkins (third) and Donovan McNabb (first).
