McNabb, Raiders update

Is Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha in play as trade bait for Donovan McNabb? Does McNabb want to stay with the Eagles? Some links to pass along this afternoon.

McNabb, Raiders update

POSTED: Friday, March 26, 2010, 1:46 PM

A couple links that caught my eye this afternoon.

Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com reports that the Raiders are willing to send cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to the Eagles as part of a deal for McNabb, but that the Birds are reluctant.

Per Schefter, the problem with Asomugha is that he has one more year on his contract for $16M.

Asaomugha has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons. He will turn 29 in July.

Which bring us to another report - this one from Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports. Robinson reports that the Raiders are in front right now in the McNabb race. We pointed to a Jason La Canfora report yesterday on NFL.com that said the same thing.

But here's the big piece of information from Robinson. He reports that the Raiders would not require McNabb to sign a contract extension if they traded for him. If true, this would change everything because McNabb would not have a say in the deal. It's not like he has a no-trade clause. The reason he would have a say is because it was assumed any team that traded for him would demand a contract extension.

In other words, no team would offer up draft picks to rent a QB for a year. But if a team is not giving up draft picks and is giving up a player (especially one on the final year of his contract), then maybe such a trade would be feasible.

Update: Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Donovan McNabb spoke with Andy Reid Thursday and told him his preference is to stay in Philadelphia this season, not Oakland or Buffalo.

Update 2: The Daily News' Les Bowen caught up with McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith, who said he has not discussed which teams he'd prefer to be traded to with the Eagles.

Sidenote: Quick shout-out to a loyal group of MTC readers and the Philadelphia Sports Network floor hockey champs: Three Girls, One Puck. They brought home the title earlier this week, and we are always happy to latch on to winners here, so consider MTC the official blog sponsor of the champs.

Not really. We are getting a guy on the last year of his contract to. So it evens out. But then what do we do with Sheldon Brown? Think we could get a 2nd for him?

NNamdi is by far the best CB in NFL. This would be huge, Fat Andy doesnt have the stones to pull the trigger. WE end up with 3rd round pick for Donny unless Roseman is the real deal. Pray we ger NNamdi from Raiders!!!

Not a terrible exchange, but it does not solve our DE, Safety, Center, and linebacker questions. Instead it adds a question, what do we do with 3 cornerbacks that all think they should start?

A franchise QB for a corner? That would be the most moronic trade of all time. maybe for Asomugha and a 1st rounder. but regardless trading donovan is the height of stupidity

If they can negotiate a new contract with Nmandi it wouldn't be a bad deal. Nmandi is considered one of the best all-around CB in the league. He's about 6 months younger than Asante Samuel. With Nmandi and an improvement at safety the secondary would definitely be in good shape. We'll see. Could be another false rumor.

Shut down corners are never available, anyone who thinks Don is worth a 29 year old shut down is crazy. IF Eagles were to pull this off it would the trade of the decade!!! McNabb is one injury from retirement and Nnamdi doesnt get much coverage out in Oakland but he is best rated player in ALL NFL by ESPN.com player rankings!!! The moron who said, we need NNAmdi and a first rounder for Donovan is smoking something serious. Pass me some of that stuff!!

Bulls##$t, now Birds would have 2 soft, no-tackling corners. Cowholes are waiting...

Donovan was a franchise when he could scramble, now he's just average.

I am a Raiders the Eagles would be stupid not to take Nnamdi. You never hear about him because no one is dumb enough to throw to his side.

As long as Reid is still coach, doesn't matter what happens with McNabb... if you want to end the era of "good enough to be annoying" then they BOTH have to go... nuff said...

Lonewolf last year: "Kolb will win the SB within two years, or sooner." Lonewolf yesterday: "Give KK a decade." Have some pride, flip flop.
