Could Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott be in line for a head-coaching gig?

Sean McDermott spent 10 seasons in the Eagles' organization before being named defensive coordinator last offseason.

But could his tenure as Jim Johnson's successor be only a one-year gig?

Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com reports that McDermott's name is on the short list of assistant coaching candidates expected to be interviewed by the Buffalo Bills for their head-coaching vacancy.

Other assistants mentioned in the report are the Cardinals' Russ Grimm, the Vikings' Leslie Frazier, the Jets' Brian Schottenheimer and the Chargers' Ron Rivera.

Higher profile names like Brian Billick and Bill Cowher have also been mentioned in connection with the Bills' job.

Buffalo fired Dick Jauron during the regular season, and Perry Fewell was named the interim head coach for the final seven games.

The Eagles finished 12th in the NFL and sixth in the NFC in total defense (321.1 yards per game) this season under McDermott. They were 12th in the NFL and ninth in the NFC in scoring defense (21.1 points per game).

McDermott's unit was tied for second in the league with 37 takeaways.

The Eagles, of course, did not turn in a good defensive performance Sunday against the Cowboys. On Monday, I'll post Man Up with a detailed look at how each player performed.

The whole team played like they wanted him to get an interview as soon as possible.

i guess buffalo wants to play with no heart, tackle poorly, and miss assignments with regularity. if that's the case, they've got the right guy.

After the pathetic game that he called on Sunday, Buffalo can have him. He coached like a pansie.

Sean has much to learn as a coordinator before becoming a head coach. Take a look at the fool out in Denver, power rushed to his head and he has had nothing but problems. He may get another year but the fan base has had their fill.

I agree that McDermott's game plan was faulty and at the heart of the Eagle D's failure last Sunday. We saw the same thing in several games earlier in the season. Still, he's a rookie in the job. Let's see how he does this coming Sunday. It's a tough situation from several aspects, but I keep thinking about what JJ would do in these circumstances. If Little Sean can suss that out , man up and get his players to execute, they can stop the Cowgirls dead in their tracks.

Pormatilda, thoroughly enjoyed your perceptive and wise words. Thank you. Todd Pratt, I was bitterly angry and disappointed about the Eagles- until I read your post. Again, thank you.
