Report: Eagles looking to trade Baskett

POSTED: Monday, September 14, 2009, 4:53 PM

And so it continues.

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio is reporting that the Eagles are looking to deal Hank Baskett to clear up a roster spot for Jeff Garcia.

The Eagles carried seven wide receivers to start the season, but they only dressed five against the Panthers. Reggie Brown and rookie Brandon Gibson were both inactive.

Baskett played, but was not on the field a lot, catching one ball for 6 yards.

Last year, he caught 33 balls for 440 yards and three touchdowns. He's been with the Eagles since 2006.

From earlier:

I didn't know where to begin with the Jeff Garcia news. It raises several questions so I'm just going to list them.

But first, Andy Reid confirmed and explained the move during his radio show on WIP:

"It's a unique situation because Michael is suspended for a week and Donovan's banged up so we don't know how long Donovan's gonna be and at the same time, we need a second quarterback in there if needed for this weekend," Reid said.

Now the questions:

1. What does this say about the team's confidence in Kevin Kolb? To me, that is the biggest question here. All we've heard from the Eagles is that they like Kolb. It was almost as if they were anxious to see him perform in a situation like the one they are currently in. But now, it's tough to believe that. Does Sunday amount to a tryout? If Kolb plays poorly and Donovan McNabb can't go in Week 3, does Garcia get a chance? If Kolb starts Sunday and underperforms in the first half, do they turn to Garcia?

2. Why would Garcia want to come here for just a couple weeks? In the original post, I explained that A.J. Feeley choosing the Panthers made sense. He joins a team with a shaky QB situation instead of the Eagles, where he likely would be cut once Michael Vick was reinstated and McNabb got healthy. But shouldn't the same hold true for Garcia? Or have the Eagles explained to him that there's a chance he could hang on all season? Which, of course, would mean the end of Kolb's time here.

3. Who do the Eagles release? The team has officially annouced the Garcia deal, which means they have to make a roster move. Do they cut one of the guys along the defensive line? Do they part ways with one of their seven receivers? Someone else? Remember, as of last weekend, this year's contracts are guaranteed. In other words, they still have to pay and take the cap hit for whoever they let loose.

4. If the Eagles kept Garcia, Vick and McNabb, would they become the first team in history to have three former Pro Bowl QBs on the same roster?

5. What happens when McNabb gets healthy? Some were already worried that the fans would be calling for Vick. But now adding Garcia to the mix takes it to a different level. Fans loved him during that 2006 season.

6. Am I reading too much into this? Maybe it's just a matter of the Eagles needing a backup QB for a couple weeks, looking over the options and picking the player that was the best fit. If Garcia backs up Kolb for a couple weeks and then is released, we'll know that's all it was. Hard to take this one for face value though.

Earlier we posted a full notebook of how every offensive player performed in yesterday's game.

This tells me McNabb could be out awhile. I can't imagine Garcia coming here for a week or two. Kolb and Vick are not anywhere near the level of McNabb or Garcia. This gives us a chance to win until McNabb gets back. This is the best possible option we had.

better to have a garcia and not need him, than to need a garcia and be stuck with a kolb...

My first reaction was WHAT THE F+++K are they doing? Then I remembered that I had been saying all along that it was a mistake to let AJ go when they will need him next season to replace either Vick or McNabb as one of them will have to go, the Eagles can't pay starting QB salary to both of them. Now I get it, AJ sees Vick as #1 QB which means he will never be more than #3 with the Eagles and now was a good time to get away before the possible cap lifting in 2010. Garcia at this point in his career will be happy to be in Philly and doesn't see himself as the starter even though he knows the system here. He could be #2 with Kolb behind Vick him as he matures. Garcia could not come back if he thinks McNabb will be here in the long run.

Smart move...Garcia is a pro and knows how to play. I would like to see Kolb be successful and if his last preseason game is an indicator he has made big strides.

It's still a shame that Andy wouldn't let Jeff Garcia go for the victory in the NFC Championship Game with no time outs left, instead Andy stubbornly punted at mid-field to the Saints and thought that the former Heisman Trophy winner, Reggie Bush, wouldn't get a first down - c'mon............... I think Andy just didn't want Garcia showing up his boy McChoke.............

Garcia is better than Kolb. Even if he is here for 2 weeks its a good signing. Garcia's money isn't guaranteed and if McNabb has a lingering injury than we need 3 qb's. Kolb is terrible and if you are Garcia a pay check is a paycheck. So that is why he signed here who wouldn't want a pile of money just to play football for a weeks.

This tells me 3 things, and I would be very surprised if this shook out differently: 1. Garcia is the starter until week 5...they decided to hold McNabb out until after the bye week to make sure he heals properly. No need risking further injury this early and with some winnable games on the slate. 2. The team has no confidence in Kevin Kolb other than as strictly a backup, and his days in Philly are done. It was an ill-advised decision to draft him, and this finally brings that to the surface. 3. In no way is Michael Vick going to be ready to QB the team as a starter anytime soon. I think it is a great move given the situation...they are sending a message that they want to WIN...and Kolb is not the answer, nor is risking further injury to Donovan. Garcia can step right in and win.

This guy is dumber than wood. They signed a third string quarteback because the one they have is suspended. Uh oh! The Patriots have backs behind Brady hmmm I think this is raising serious questions. Oh wait a minute evey team in the league has backup quarterbacks my bad.

This says nothing about the FO's faith in Kolb. They NEEDED a backup quarterback, so they signed the best one available. My faith in Kolb, of course, is another question altogether.

Vick will be starting by game 3. Didi any of you see Garcia play during his last season with Tampa, and if he was still any good why did the Raiders cut him (the Raiders are garbage!).
