Report: Eagles likely to wait on Vick trade

Before we get to the Michael Vick report, a couple housekeeping items.

We started our Year in Review series with David Akers, and as some commenters and the folks at Iggles Blog pointed out, I somehow forgot to include his performance on kickoffs. Bad job by me. Maybe this is what happens to my brain once football season ends?

Anyway, Derek over at IB fills in the gaps and starts an interesting discussion about whether the Eagles could benefit from a kickoff specialist. Worth checking out.

The other housekeeping item is one I will annoy you with constantly: Become a fan of MTC on Facebook.

Now on to Vick.

League sources tell Jason La Canfora of NFL.com that the Eagles have not initiated any talks with teams about Vick. That doesn't mean they haven't listened when other teams have started the conversation though.

And sources from two teams tell La Canfora they don't expect Vick to be dealt until the preseason.

The Eagles owe Vick a roster bonus in March, but per the report, that $1.5M number will not force them to pull the trigger on a deal in the next few weeks. In other words, the Eagles could be willing to pay the bonus and wait for a better deal for Vick before the start of the 2010 season.

"I don't think there is enough value in a trade to make the move now," an executive with a team that needs QB help told La Canfora. "They don't have to trade him before the roster bonus is due, and I'd be very surprised if they traded him in March. I expect them to hold on to him until he has more peak value, and that could be in August or September."

If the Eagles do wait until August/September, and end up dealing Vick for draft picks, it would mean they'd have nothing to show for him until the 2011 season.

And as a Twitter follower pointed out, it would mean Vick would have a limited amount of time to learn the new offensive system and get adjusted to his teammates. Doesn't sound like the best plan for a guy who has thrown 13 NFL passes in the past three seasons, but we'll just have to see how it all plays out.
