Report: Eagles made offer for Burgess

The New England Patriots have acquired former Eagles defensive end Derrick Burgess from the Oakland Raiders.

However, according to one report, the Patriots weren't Burgess' only suitor.

Adam Schefter reports the Eagles were in the mix for his services.

New England gave up a third-round pick in 2010 and a fifth-rounder in 2011, reports Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post.

Schefter, via his Twitter account, says the Eagles offered a third-round pick and an unidentified player.

So who might the player have been?

It's only a guess, but Reggie Brown and Hank Baskett come to mind. The Eagles have a surplus at receiver, and the question all camp has been -- will the team keep both those guys on the roster?

I know some of you might mention Sheldon Brown, but in my opinion, that would be a pretty high price to pay. Brown has looked good in camp and is a starting cornerback. Burgess' role with the Eagles' defense would likely be as a rotation guy and situational pass rusher. Don't get me wrong. It would have filled a need, but I don't think they'd have agreed to include Sheldon Brown.

Burgess turns 31 next week and had 3.5 sacks in 10 games last season. In his first three seasons with the Raiders, Burgess piled up 35 sacks, an impressive number. In 2005, he had a Pro Bowl season, leading the league with 16 sacks. Burgess also went to Hawaii in 2006 when he had 11 sacks.

The Eagles drafted him in the third round of the 2001 draft. Burgess had six sacks as a rookie. He signed a five-year, $17.5 million with Oakland in 2005.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen was the first to report that the Eagles could have interest in Burgess, back in May.
