Report: Eagles, Bills haven't talked Peters

POSTED: Saturday, April 11, 2009, 12:00 PM

The Eagles have been mentioned several times this offseason as a potential suitor for Bills offensive tackle Jason Peters.

However, a league source tells ESPN.com's Tim Graham that the Eagles haven't had any discussions with the Bills about the Pro Bowl left tackle.

NFL sources tell Graham that it's "highly unlikely" the Bills will deal Peters before the draft, but there's still a chance a trade could go down in the next two weeks.

What is the asking price? An AFC personnel executive tells Graham that the conversation would start with a first- and a third-round pick.

The question Eagles fans are tossing around: Would Peters be worth it?

One GM tells Graham that while Peters is a premium offensive tackle, trading for him might not be a wise move.

"Once you give him the money, I'm not so sure he plays up to it," the GM said.

Peters, 27, is under contract for two more seasons. If the Bills don't trade him and the two sides don't come to terms on a new deal, he'll likely hold out, just as he did last year.

Sidenote: Here's a link to a radio interview I did with Fox 1470 last week.

Notice it's a "league source" says that the Eagles and Bills haven't talked about Peters. It's not a "Bills source" or an "Eagles source". I don't think there's probably been much significant trade talk about Peters though with anyone because the Bills aren't trying to trade him yet. If they'll take the 28th pick in the 1st round and a 3rd rounder for him...I'd make that trade if I was the Eagles. The guy is only 27...he's in his prime...it's hard to acquire All-Pro LTs in their prime. Whether a rookie can step in and effectively play LT right away in the NFL is questionable...there are very few who have done that and done it well. The only thing that held this guy back the last season was that he missed training camp while holding out for a new contract and he was probably distracted a little by the contract situation. If the Eagles trade for him, it's not going to be unless they can get him to agree to a new deal. So if the Eagles get him, he'll be happy with his contract and he'll be fine. The guy has had no other issues.

Somehow someway, that Right OT position MUST get solidified before training camp. I don't see anybody on the current roster stepping in. I also know that no rookie available to us (without packaging both firsts) can step in either. That leaves a trade. And the only name floating around right now is Peters'. A first and a third sounds like good value to me unless they are targeting a VERY specific need with that third they always seem to covet. (Brian Westbrook anybody?) But the need is so glaringly obvious to the Bills, that I don't see a deal being struck, as I'm sure they woulod want the sun and moon too. I hope the brain trust has something up their collective sleeves to address this situation. Yeah, right.....who am I kidding.

Move Shawn Andrews to LT and Stacey Andrews to RT. Herremans at LG, Jackson at C, and Jean-Gilles at RG. Then you have Cole as a backup at both G positions and C. Draft a T in the 2nd or 3rd round and a couple of G/Cs later on for depth. You could also wait until after cuts are made by other teams and add depth. You can then use the 2 1st round picks on skill players.

I wouldn't give a 1 and a 3 for Peters. Stay at 21 and 28. Trade up with the Lions for their 33rd. Give them your 53rd, 85th and 2 of the 5th round choices. Then you can walk away, with wise selections, a TE, RB and OLT or Center. Three players who can start right away.

RT? Stacey Andrews is a RT. That's why the Eagles signed him. If they sign Peters, it's to play LT, not RT. The Eagles won't pay big bucks? They paid big bucks to McNabb, they paid big bucks to Westbrook, they paid very big bucks to Asante Samuel, they paid huge bucks to Kearse, they paid big bucks to Runyan. When guys are in their prime, the Eagles will pay big bucks to top-level talent. They won't pay big bucks to mid-30s veterans with declining skills. Peters is 27 years old, in his prime and they are way under the salary cap. They'd pay big bucks for Peters. Peters isn't a diva. The guy wants a new contract and he's sat out training camp and mini-camps to try to obtain the new contract. Tons of players have done that. He doesn't bad-mouth the team in the media, he doesn't throw his teammates under the bus when talking to the press, he doesn't do choreographed dance routines all over the field every time he makes a decent play, he doesn't draw penalties and fines just so he can show off. The guy isn't a diva in the least. Marco, hate to break it to you but the Eagles aren't going to trade 4 draft picks for a 2nd rounder...I'm pretty sure no NFL team would do that. I also highly doubt that the Eagles would spend a top 33 pick on either a TE or Center. Reid doesn't value either position enough to spend that high of a pick on one of those positions. Asking 3 rookies to be able to start in the NFL is asking a lot...maybe if they were all top 10 choices but late first-rounders, early second-rounders? There's no way you go into training camp hoping that 3 rookies will be able to start and not turn out to be busts.

Birds are very thin at O Line. Jean Giles is coming of major surgery and may only be a back-up at best. If Peters could be had for first and third, they should consider it. Or maybe they should have taken Otah last year.

Should the Eagles really want a guy who only plays when properly motivated, i.e. when he's getting paid. Peters is selfish and overrated. Forget him.

hes is a top3 NFL LT. FACT. but he is a diva though. id rather have Chad Ocho Cinco tough for a 2nd and reggie brown (a bengals source said they are looking to deal him if they do for a 2nd rounder).

Rather trade up to draft for an OT - clearly one of the most valvuable positions on the team - getting it right is highly important.

I agree with the Marco Islander. Stay put and take the BPA and trade up into the second or third with all the extra picks that wont make the team anyway.
