Cowboys trade for WR Roy Williams

POSTED: Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 4:27 PM
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Cowboys have traded for Lions wide receiver Roy Williams.

UPDATE: The trade is official and being reported by several media outlets.

Here's what it took to get Williams so you can decide if the Eagles had this much to offer and should have pulled the trigger:

A first-, third- and sixth-round pick in the 2009 draft.

The Lions also included a seventh-rounder in 2009.

Rumors had been swirling today about the possibility of the Chiefs dealing tight end Tony Gonzalez. Both the Giants and the Eagles had been mentioned as possible destinations, but he's not going anywhere, Herm Edwards announced at a news conference.

In other news...

Cowboys cornerback Pacman Jones has been suspended indefinitely. Didn't see that one coming, huh? According to the Dallas Morning-News, 'indefinitely' means at least four games. Jones had an altercation with a team bodyguard last week, which the league described as an alcohol-related physical altercation.

The Redskins have reportedly signed running back Shaun Alexander.

And as reported by both Birds' Eye View and Eagletarian, the Eagles have cut Tony Hunt and signed linebacker Tracy White. A couple notes on this:

1. Colleague and Birds fan Mike Potter after he heard the news: "How are they going to spin this one? 'We believe the acquisition of White is as big, if not bigger, than the Cowboys' acquisition of Roy Williams.'" I think many of you probably share his thoughts.

2. Sympathies to my buddy Lemur, a Penn State grad and an Eagles fan. Unfortunately, he received a Hunt authentic jersey from his girlfriend a couple years ago since he was such a big fan of the running back in college. Said Lemur in an e-mail: "I feel sick."

That's way too much to give up for Roy Williams... The Alexander deal is more intriguing, he'd be the best 3rd string RB in the league and with the injury histories of Westy and Buck...

i really cant believe these comments. they feel like theyre a joke. i understand everyones frustrated with the play call, the lack of a star WR, and no moves to do anything better. but why is everyone going so far to hate on andy reid so bad? these past two years havent been great, agreed. but andy has proven he is a good coach, we were in the superbowl right?? where were all u critics then? the roy williams thing sux i know..i want a receiver more than anyone..but u guys are way over the top. if this is ur favorite team then prove it. u guys look like sell outs, esp "the steelers are my new favorite team" get a life.

I have been an Eagles fan for a long time. I just wanted to say that I am sorry. I am sorry that this organization is more interested in about making a profit than winning the Super Bowl and they refuse to commit to excellence. They constantly put McNabb in positions that no other top QB in the league has to deal with that being trying to win it all almost all by yourself. The fact that the Cowboys have RW is just the icing on the cake that clearly illustrates the commitment of Jerry Jones and 'steady as she' goes mentality of JL and AR. AR's personnel moves are as predictable as his play calling and I feel sorry for McNabb and I hope they trade him to a team like Chicago who at least seems serious about their commitment. The Eagles are only concerned about doing just enough to be competitive and keep their fans interested, not winning championships. I leave you with this Manning has Wayne and Harrison, Palmer has Johnson and,Houshmandzadeh, Romo has Owens and now Williams, Brady has Moss and Welker, Eli Manning has Burress and Toomer, Rivers has Chambers, Jackson and Gates, Warner has Boldin and Fitzgerald, Cutler has Royal and Marshall and what does McNabb have just a bunch of Andy's guys, no wonder LJ can't get open......it's sad.

I am getting so sick and tired of the Eagles and their egotistical attytude. This is a guy who is in the prime of his career who would give McNabb and eventually Kolb a prime time target for years. So they sit on their content arses and watch as one of their rivals drops 3 picks in next years draft to get a premier wide receiver. HEY EAGLES, there is a reason that the Cowboys have all those rings - even when they are good they are not afraid to spend the money or use untested draft picks to make themselves even better.

You people must have forgotten what it was like before Andy Reid got here. The Eagles have been consistent winners for most of his career. Sure he's stodgy and plays it save too much but the Eagles have a chance at the playoffs every season. I am growing tired of McNabb's panicky passes thrown at the feet of 6'4 receivers and his refusal to run under almost any circumstance. It may be time for him to move on.

Based on these posts, Philly's gotta have the hysterical, whining fans in the NFL. Some of you haters are embarrassing the rest of us. Remove the sticks from your bums and get a life.

Yea Dallas has done so well since JJ took over control of player personel? Same with that great "win at all cost" owner Dan Synder?? Come on people.

Jerry needs those cowgirls to get to the SB -So he can make that money to pay for the new stadium-But at least he is trying and he can judge talent-or has people who work for him that can judge quality talent—I don’t know what we have in Philly-They can only judge -O line talent or players who have maybe one year left in them.

I'm ok with the fact that they didn't trade for Roy Williams.. kinda disappointed that they didn't get Gonzales, but the thing that's gonna push me over the edge is if the Eagles trade down with their 2 first rounders in the next draft.

What people are not getting is Williams will play better now--Since he is on a winning team and a team that reside in Texas. Williams also likes to play in a state that he used to play in college. Second Williams is a deep threat and the cowgirls have missed that when they lost Glen-So of course he will help the cowgirls -Heck he could have helped us .Since we thought we had a deep threat with GLewis, but Mr. Scary didn’t turn out the way we wanted.
