Report: Chiefs' Gonzalez still wants out

You've gotta love this time of year.

Yesterday, we posted an item about Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez. Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt spoke to The Kansas City Star about a few of the team's veterans and said the team is likely to keep Gonzalez.

But today is a new day. And a new story has emerged. This one saying Gonzalez still wants out.

A source close to Gonzalez told the Associated Press that the Chiefs' tight end would still like to be traded.

"If the right deal can be made, Tony very much wants the Chiefs to trade him," the person told the AP. "Tony is not demanding a trade. Tony cherishes the time he's spent with the Chiefs and he loves the way he's always been treated by the fans there. But he knows of some other teams that would be interested in him and if the right deal can be made, he wants it to be made."

"If the Chiefs can't make a deal with the right team, then Tony will be fine with that," the person said. "He is not demanding a trade. But if the right deal can be made, he very much would like to be traded."

So there you have it.

Would it surprise us later today to see Gonzalez come out and say he doesn't want to be traded? No. But then again it wouldn't really surprise us if he came out and said the opposite. Such is the nature of the NFL offseason.

Some other items of note:

** Will Plaxico Burress be on the field in 2009? Will he be in jail? Those questions have yet to be answered, but some interesting stuff from Mike Garafolo of The Newark Star-Ledger. Osi Umenyiora tells Garafolo he thinks Burress will avoid jail time and get five years probation because he doesn't have any priors. Garafolo says that's what he's been hearing also.

** Good stuff in our Eagles section today from the guys at The Inquirer and Daily News. Updates on Bills tackle Jason Peters, interesting comments from Marvin Lewis on Stacy Andrews and Jerry Jones on Tony Romo, plus a breakdown of the new rule changes.

** Andy Reid is expected to meet with reporters today during breakfast at the owners' meetings in California. Be sure to check back on philly.com for reports from Paul Domowitch and Bob Brookover.
