Report: Browns showing interest in Gocong

Yesterday, Chris Gocong signed his restricted free-agent tender.

But that doesn't mean he'll be with the Eagles next season.

An NFL source tells Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post that the Browns have had "preliminary discussions" with the Eagles about acquiring the outside linebacker.

As you know if you are a frequent reader of MTC, my feeling is that the Eagles have never really found a way to use Gocong in a position where he could have success. And I don't see that changing here. He had one sack last season and four in the last three.

A trade would not be surprising at all, and it will be interesting to see if Gocong finds success rushing the quarterback in a different system.

Cleveland obviously has the Tom Heckert connection and employs a 3-4 defense.

Last season, Gocong was replaced by rookie seventh-round pick Moise Fokou on the strong side. There was the failed experiment of trying Gocong in the middle, which was probably unfair to him (although the Eagles didn't really have a lot of options at the time).

If the Birds do deal Gocong, the strong-side job could fall to Fokou. But then again, given the amount of trade activity we could see in the coming weeks, there's a chance the starting strong-side LB isn't currently on the roster. Last year, they were willing to give the job to a seventh-round pick, so it stands to reason they could rely on a rookie there again in 2010.

And in case you missed it, we updated yesterday's post with comments DeSean Jackson made about the Eagles' quarterback situation while at the Sixers' game last night. Nothing too exciting. Similar remarks to LeSean McCoy and Brent Celek.

Much more coming later.

What would be the offer for him? I would hope at least a 4th round pick.

I would take a hoagie and a bag of Utz potato chips along with a soda, that would be great!!! I never really thought Gocong was anything much and I think anything would be better than what we have..!

Gocong, as a 3-4 LB, will excel- the eagles really messed him up with how he was used in a 4-3, he should be rushing the passer all game, not dropping into coverage. The only time he was used properly was against NE a few years back when they went 3-4 against Brady and he was around the ball all game.

Can we get a bag of used balls for him? If so, do it!

JLH- Gocong had 23.5 sacks his senior year in college, so the eagles decide to draft him and have him cover a TE all game and maybe blitz 10 times a year- does that make much sense to you?

Of all of the head scratchers that result in being an Eagles fan on the outside looking in, the personnel decisions made regarding LBers is one of the ongoing ones.

Gocong played OK for Jim Johnson. Like some many on the 2009 Eagles defense--it was a year of frustration and steps backwards. Has Sean McDermott changed the defense that much? Maybe its not the players?

Gocong is a typical example of Andy Reid thinking he can change a players position to fit his scheme. IT NEVER WORKS ANDY! You are not that smart!

He played that 'joker' position in the New England game on that Sunday night - and then never again. If he was known as a pass-specialist and we need a pass rush, is this just they are too stubborn to admit they were wrong? Funny how their need to be right has been an obstacle for this team.
