McNabb looking forward to next step
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
Donovan McNabb won't have to wait until the offseason to part ways with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings have released him. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the move earlier today.
Why now?
So he can pursue opportunities with teams that have suffered injuries at quarterback.
"I just thought the best move for me at this particular point was to move on and clear my thoughts and clear my head and see what's next," McNabb said during a SportsCenter interview.
The Bears are one team that could be interested. They lost Jay Cutler and went with Caleb Hanie last week. Hanie threw three interceptions in a 25-20 loss to the Raiders. Chicago is 7-4 and very much in position to compete for a wild-card spot in the NFC.
"I think there are a lot of teams out there who are in desperate need of a quarterback at this particular point, who are surrounded by veteran players, and teams that play well together," McNabb said.
When asked to describe the last two years, which have been disastrous in Washington and Minnesota, McNabb used the word "exciting."
"I don't regret anything that's happened throughout my career," he said. "You go through ups and downs no matter what you do, if it's in sports or in life, but I look back on my career and it's been outstanding..."
One other team that was thought to potentially be in the mix was the Texans, although John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that McNabb is probably not headed there. Houston lost Matt Schaub for the season, and Matt Leinart suffered a season-ending injury last week. The Texans went with rookie T.J. Yates in their win over the Jaguars. They also signed veteran Jake Delhomme last week. Houston has an 8-3 record and holds a two-game lead over the Titans in the AFC South.
Teams interested in McNabb will have to file a waiver claim by 4 p.m. Friday. If no team claims him, McNabb would become a free agent and could sign anywhere.
The Vikings went 1-5 with McNabb at the helm, before he was benched for rookie Christian Ponder. McNabb had a QB rating of 82.9, throwing four touchdowns and two interceptions, while completing 60.3 percent of his passes. At the time of McNabb's benching, a report surfaced from Michael Lombardi of NFL Network, which questioned his McNabb's work ethic.
During the SportsCenter interview, McNabb said he can bring experience and athletic ability to a team. He also said he's "a guy who is not a locker room cancer" and added that he works hard.
McNabb threw 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in one season with the Redskins in 2010. He turned 35 years old last week.

i vote that Dallas should take mcnagg. The Birds kept him as long as he could play. They also kept the head coach past time for replacement. McNagg is just trying to grab one last paycheck. Not worth his weight in pennies anymore. Of course Andy's weight in pennies would be a lot! Dutch-wayne
McNabb, please go away.... and take Reid with you. watsonmr
oops, playoffs wins.

Young is a horrible QB -- can't throw, can't run, can't win. Funny thing -- all that hate for McNabb -- have you noticed we've done zip since he was traded. Bottom-line -- McNabb was a very good QB who was saddled for many years with second string receivers and a coach who didn't want to run the ball even when he had a guy at RB who could run. Reid never "got" that run pass balance thing down. How many games did NcNabb throw the ball 35 plus times and the RB would get 10 carries. Meanwhile the clock was ticking == McNabb was aging, and getting beaten up because the O line couldn't block anybody and eventually he couldn't run as much as he did before all the injuries and age caught up to him. Finally when we got great young wideouts and the running game improved -- THEN the team decided to trade him. I'd rather have 35 year old McNabb out there NOW than watch another minute of Young. Vick is injury prone and unless the Eagles build an offensive line that can hold off the knockdowns and sacks -- welcome to Eagles football where part of every season the QB will be the backup because the starter is injured. Tonight's game was putrid. sherry37
merchanise, P. Manning was horrible in his superbowl win. Manning has been a playoff choker and his teams were laoded, at least on offense. McNabb has more layoff wins than your All American boy. EL Zorro
And look the iggles lost again because the $100 million dog killer got injured. flavious27
news Flash...McNabb coming to Phila as a fourth QB...100 million for him envirojoe55
McNabb wants no part in losers from Philly! A team who has never brought a Championship trophy home to Philly.......Thats poor! MRD- " ...and teams that play well together," McNabb said.
Oh-oh. That just eliminated the Eagles.

Look for McNabb to come back to Philly next season and battle Mike Vick for the starting job. Although this could only happen if Andy Reid is still coach next season, its not totally out of the realm of possibility. Vince Young will be gone and who better are the Eagles going to get for a backup? I don't think Jeff Garcia is in the mix any longer. SteveS11
merchandiser, he's a lot better than jaws, cunningham, vick, young. In his prime, he was a top 10 QB.
Quixote, how obvious is it? Of course, your fat *ss sweats just by thinking about trying to get up off the couch. palmyra21
McNabb hardly ever threw interception when he was in Philly. Take a look at Vick's numbers. p-diddy
Beagles fans booed McNabb when he was drafted by the organ-i-zation. What a bunch of dopes. Beagles fans = white trash trailer park. taxmanndumbeth
420Phillie cracks me up-- why do people feel the knee-jerk need to say "classy classy class-act" whenever McNabb's name comes up? Do you not recall McNabb passive-aggressively ripping people? His own defense? The rookies? He even threw Pam Oliver under the bus. Shaggy
McNabb was an above avg QB that could have benefited from better coaching, better game plans and more of a running game. Again Reid is to blame. Andy atleast had a plan when he got here...now he just seems lost not sure what to do...who to draft. Time is up Reid. Get out. RealizticFan
McNabb is and will always be a class act. All you green KoolAId drinkers ripping him is hilarious. Sounds like misery loves company! 420Phillie
I really would love to see "fatty McNabb" embarrass himself to the point that he, and everyone realizes that he is done! plaurie
I am in tears!! likhon
Good one, jimmymack Paul G

McNabb has had MUCH more success with the Eagles, than the fraud Michael Vick....PERIOD. frank105
McNabb is completely washed up. Any team that signs him is crazy. He has been terrible for over 3 years now and it is time for him to retire. vinnybravo
Not only is he not a pocket passer he is NO leader behind center.
1- Peyton Manning
1A- Tom Tom Brady
2- Drew like the view Brees
2A- The other Aaron.Aaron Rogers
these 4 have all won......theee game.....McNabb..NOT
He is not nor will he ever be an accurate passer...
Maybe a commentator in future..ie: Syracuse Univ lots of communication majors..Michael Barkann merchandiser
cosmoK, thank you for making me laugh out loud at that comment! Gilbert Brown, that's too funny! mjc1

The bird's should sign him as a linebacker, he's bigger than the ones we have, maybe he can stop the run. jimmymack
Is D Mac going to start tonight? I hope so..
Signing him may be the only way to get fans to come see the last 2 home games... dedhed
I see there are still many McNabb haters' and bashers out there. Just remember who won all of those games while Number 5 was an Eagle. Bet you clowns wish he were here now to make those low throws. I see the Eagles' dropping Fat Andy at the end of the season, and drafting Vick's replacement within two years. But it will still take another three years for things to turn around. lalaw9833
@mkat33, more growup than you are. Kat got your tongue? Panthro2011
@James - F-16 Falcon. vipers53
Donowhine McSadd. McNagg. You're a fat old man. Yeah, you're the grownup. mkat33
Frag105 is again spewing his hatred of Eagles QBs. Too bad no one cares what you have to say. Maybe when you grow up one day, you can get involved in grown folks business. Until then, STFU! Donowhine McSadd's career is over! Let him leave the Vikings and go to the NFL Network or something. No one needs his worm-killing, pigeon-blasting throws on their team anymore. Once he gave up being a running QB, that was his demise. That was his best weapon besides his arm once upon a time. Goodbye McNagg. You had a good career once. Now? You're a fat old man in a league that no longer needs you! Panthro2011

I believe the wrong photograph was attached to this article - post is about mcnabb, but in the photo it appears to be former packers nose tackle gilbert brown.
what a slob mcnabb has become, wow, no wonder he can't throw. CosmoK- mcnabb stopped running for 1st downs, which made him so successful in the beginning of his career in philly. he also then believed he was a pocket passer, which he wasn't too good at jamarder
Low throw McBlow will be unsuccessful whereever he goes. Maybe he could win something as a back-up while standing on the sidelines. Voytas- Is the new Soldiers field still natural grass? If so the bears should hire BOZO to make sure all the worms are gone by the end of year.
jwatson - Chicago might be a good fit for McNabb. It's his home town and if Martz keeps it simple the way he did with Cutler, McNabb could do a decent job. Hand off to Forte, play action passes is what McNabb does best. McNabb should be in decent shape to step right in.
He'd be a perfect fit for Chicago or Houston - two teams with stout defenses and good running games that just need a veteran game manager to get to the playoffs. I was never a huge fan while he was here (Westbrook and Dawkins were the heart and soul of the McNabb years), but I would like to see him do well in the twilight of his career. jpk
Donnie Mac always got a raw deal here. Shame to see him passed around the league like Paris Hilton in a Vegas bar bathroom. PinkstonsStrengthCoach- MacNabb had a great career here, but it was time to let him go when they did, and his play since has proved it. That said, he might he a good fit in Chicago, especially since it is his home town.
Bobby257 - I'd rather see McNabb under center for the Birds than Vince Young and his "well at least I played good" mentality. On the other hand, I'd rather see Kafka than either of them, so I guess that point is completely moot. centard
- i mustve missed something, when did vince young "play well"? other than a single 18 play drive, he has been terrible. CosmoK
I hope the Bears or Texans sign McNabb...it would be good to see him in the playoffs, while the Eagles DREAM TEAM does not even make the playoffs...LOL. frank105- BOZO--please come back to Andy before he enters Dr.Drew's celebrity rehab center---PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
