Report: 'Skins worried about Eagles landing Haynesworth

POSTED: Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 9:26 AM
The Redskins will have to decide whether to trade or release defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. (Susan Walsh/AP file photo)

When the Redskins make a decision on what to do with Albert Haynesworth, they'll have the Eagles in mind, according to a report.

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network recently wrote a detailed piece about Washington's plans once free agency and trades are allowed. Team sources tell La Canfora they can't see Haynesworth returning to the Redskins, and they say Mike Shanahan will likely take anything he can get for the defensive tackle in a trade.

But that's not all:

The Redskins are particularly concerned that if they release Haynesworth, he will sign with the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles and reunite with his former Tennessee Titans position coach, Jim Washburn.

It's an interesting distinction. If the Redskins have indeed decided they will not bring Haynesworth back, they have two options.

One is to just release him, which would be the easiest thing to do. But this option makes Haynesworth a free agent, meaning the Eagles would have as much of a shot at him as anyone else. Also, this would allow Haynesworth to choose where he plays next.

Or the Redskins can trade him, which is the more difficult option, but also the preferred one from Washington's perspective. Not only would they get something in return for Haynesworth, but the Redskins would dictate where he ends up, meaning they could restrict a team like the Eagles from even having a shot at him.

Of course, from the perspective of a potential suitor, trading for Haynesworth doesn't make sense if you think the Redskins are going to release him anyway. Plus, any team that trades for him will be on the hook for Haynesworth's contract. We'll find out if any franchise is willing to take on that risk.

One more thing: The notion that the Redskins don't want the Eagles to land Haynesworth indicates they still believe he can be an effective player. If they felt strongly that he's going to disrupt another team/locker room, they'd have no issue with Haynesworth playing for the Birds. In a distorted, roundabout way, it's almost an endorsement. Almost.

La Canfora's piece had some other good nuggets on Washington's plans. He expects them to be active in free agency and go after Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

Team sources also tell La Canfora they expect Shanahan to eventually be forced to release Donovan McNabb because trade options are limited.

Hanynesworth is worth it. Redskins will cut him and no team will trade for him. So all the eagles have to do, is to sign him to a one year deal and an option for another if does well. The. After that if there is no trouble with him then sign to a ,long term deal. If there is problems with him, cut him at anytime. No big loss for the eagles

Did this topic get discussed to death about two weeks ago? Like the rest of you, I will have to accept what the coaching staff and the front office decide. Too many armchair defensive coaches spoils the blitz!!!!!
    unbelieveable!

All this talk of getting him cheap, incentive laden contracts, etc is meaningless. The market will dictate what he gets if he's released. IF he's released. There may be a team desperate enough to trade for him. Even if he's released, he's gonna sign with the team that'll pay him the most &/or give him the most security short and long term. Some of you act like the Eagles are the only team that will even look at him and can just decide to get him for a 1 year incentive laden deal if they feel like it.

It's great to see the Redskins continue to make such key personnel errors. Keep up the great work Mr Snyder!! Great trade for McNabb last year..........hahahahaha

Fat Albert = no respect for: football, his team, coaches, team meetings, the law, women. Other than that he's a great guy and we should sign him yesterday.

Good article. I can't imagine any team trading for Haynesworth and picking up that contract. Even if he had played, and played fabulously, that was an over-the-top contract. If we can get him dirt cheap, and Washburn thinks he'll fit in, then get him as a free agent. But I mean dirt cheap. Whatever the problems with how the Redskins handled him, this guy established that when the going gets tough, he fades out.

The redskins will release Haynesworth at the last possible chance out of spite. Hoping teams will have filled out their rosters limiting his choices. I have no problem with the Eagles signing him. If they did it will be on an incentive based contract. It is the only way the Eagles would do it. Besides you know he would show up for at least two games.

Huge gamble to bring him in here. If we can go short term deal with incentives then it's a no brainer. Can't be no worse than bunkley.

Haynesworth was at one time a premier player. Now, he has lots of money and little bits of motivation. Why bring him here now, at the end of his career?

Definitely worth the small gamble to check him out. His stock is low and the investment would be minimal.

The oddity is when both guys are released, they could both end up with the Birds. The team would get a dysfunctional tackle but pretty good, and a QB who Andy trusts and could aid Kafka in transitions after Kolb goes. And if Vick gets hurt, at least Donnie can hand the ball off and throw 10 yd passes without killing the team.

This, signing Haynesworth and signing a quality db would be a ton for the new dc to digest. However, it's also an end to any excuses.

If available -sign him up - big incentive to work with his old coach...

Pick him up if he's released and will agree to one year incentive loaded contract including good behavior clause. If not, let him walk. Haynesworth was a headache even under Washburn in Tenn.

Sign him, he and Reid can throw hoagies and donuts down together. He may also be the only player in the league that is in worse physical shape than Reid.

My take, is to not get Haynesworth - no matter what. I can't get passed seeing him laying on the ground watching the play go right by where he should have been.

Trust in Washburn to make the right call. He is too big for Andy unless he can make two d lineman from Albert.

No way the Birds go after him. He's not light enough for the Eagles D-Line. And his motor doesnt rev that high.

If he is released and the Eagles can sign him to a performance contract....he might just be good pick.....for revenage sake he projects two big wins....if sacks are at a certian level....it would motivate him to play well....and having his old coach around is a plus.....it is an attitude issue and we would have to see if his coach and Andy felt he would play.....if not....nothing lost to interview him..

No one will pick up his contract. The Skins have 3 choices: 1. eat the money and not play him, 2. release him, or 3, subsidize the contract payments to a team they trade him to. Let's see how much the Skins are willing to pay for him not to play for the Eagles.

I'm no fan of Haynesworth, but the Skins got him and right after that changed their defensive scheme and then wanted him to play nose tackle which is not his natural position. You bring Haynesworth here, put him in the right D, with his original mentor (Washburn), and let him play his All-Pro recognized position and he will flourish. Just give him an incentive laden contrcat with a sweet but not ridiculous signing bonus (like the Skins did), and he will be a solid acquisition; would love to see him just rip the Skins apart in Eagles green.

I agree totally!!!! Haynesworth still has a lot left in the tank, under 30 (which the Eagles love) and reunited with old coach. A win-win situation. Just make sure the contract is smart and includes incentives and not guaranteed money for little or no production.

GET Haynesworth... period! He has alot to prove and would be reunited with his old coach for whom he wants to play. We just need to structure this contract correctly with many incentives. He is definitely worth the risk (if contract right). Secondly...We need to get Burress for the RED Zone catches, one of the premier FA cornerbacks (first and foremost), a stud right tackle or OL to protect Vick better and if possible a competent LB that can cover the TE and also stuff the run. This would be a perfect cominbination for a Championship. I say sell-out this year or two to go for the ring and deal with the bull later. Just give the player smart and fare contracts (mostly incentive laced). Philadelphia needs a ring..NOW!!! Andy days and the Birds chances are only going to get slimmer (no pun intended towards Andy) as the years go by. The Birds are at the cusp of a ring now, they need to just go all out and grab the damn thing. GO GET the players available that they know they need. Just do the damn things for once!! The ring would heal many sore wombs here in the city, besides increasing the popularity; thus the cash flow.

The prison jokes and the Andy Reid Fat jokes are ignorant, sophomoric, and lack creativity. Get over it. This has been the 2nd most successful team in Philly for the past 10 years. And, as long as we don't have to take Haynesworth's contract, we would have to take a risk. 3 years ago he was the best defensive player in the league and hasn't even hit 30 yet.

Haynesworth is the beast in the middle of the line the Eagles haven't had since Jerome Brown. Corey Simon was good but a step down.

What's to stop a team from trading for him and then flipping him to the Eagles anyway?

And how ridiculous is it that they believe he's a good player, but they just can't squeeze a single drop of his talent out of him. That franchise is a laughingstock.

Reid wants Haynesworth here only because if he can't play he could be used to make 10,000 Big Mac's.

The Redskins suck and always will suck. If they are smart, the will realease him and Haynesworth will be the best DT in the NFL while on the Eagles roster. He will dominate so hopefully the Eagles get him.

Bird's would be foolish to be interested in a dog like Haynesworth..The brass likes to create the aura of " we're smarter than you are"...believing that the defensive line coach would erase the emotional baggage that kid brings is rather far reaching.
