Report: QB Edwards visits with Eagles
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
A couple weeks ago, reports surfaced that the Eagles worked out quarterback Trent Edwards.
Apparently, they liked enough of what they saw to bring him in for a visit and have him take a physical yesterday, according to Adam Caplan of The Sideline View.
Edwards, a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2007, has started 33 games (32 with the Bills and one with the Jaguars). He's completed 60.5 percent of his passes, but didn't get the ball downfield much, averaging just 6.5 yards per attempt. He's thrown 26 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
For his career, Edwards (6-4, 231) has averaged one INT every 30.9 attempts. As a point of reference, Michael Vick was picked off once every 30.2 attempts last season.
In 2008, Edwards completed 65.5 percent of his passes and averaged 7.2 yards per attempt.
He spent the last preseason with the Raiders, but was released and never caught on with another team. Edwards is 29 years old.
The Eagles went 1-2 with Vince Young starting last season. They also lost two more games that Mike Kafka had to finish in place of Vick.
RotoWorld has a list out of potential free-agent quarterbacks. Here are some of the names: Chad Henne, Jason Campbell, Kyle Orton, David Garrard, Shaun Hill, Byron Leftwich, Sage Rosenfels, Brady Quinn, Drew Stanton, Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman, Dennis Dixon, Charlie Batch, J.P. Losman, Dan Orlovsky, A.J. Feeley, Jeff Garcia.
It seems unlikely that the Eagles will go with Kafka as the backup.
If the Birds decide to draft a quarterback and sign a veteran quarterback like Edwards to back up Vick, Kafka could find himself without a roster spot here.
Since Edwards was not under contract last season, the Eagles can sign him whenever they want. For many of the names on the list above, who were under contract last season, the Eagles would have to wait until the start of free agency (March 13 at 4 p.m.).
In case you missed it from Tuesday, I posted my thoughts on Andy Reid, Juan Castillo, Todd Bowles and Steve Spagnuolo.

- First off, it's PEYTON. Secondly, he's still under contract with Indy. Even if they did trade or cut him, he'd be a risk. An expensive one. His neck injury is no joke.
Not a huge Vick fan, but I'd say, stay away. phillychaos
Curious how the Philly sports pundits and beat writers have made the determination that Mike Kafka doesn't have what it takes to be a an NFL b/u QB and that the Eagles are now looking to drop him and sign a new b/u as well as draft a QB.
Isn't it possible that signing an Edwards or Campbell or whomever, to be a b/u simply means they want to season Kafka for another year?
Obviously time will tell re. Eagles' plans, but Kapadia (and others!) burying Kafka seems a bit premature. FishFryFrank- just remember, these are the same people who thought the Eagles had "two good starting quarterbacks" when Kolb was still on the roster.

Young has one big problem---he is dumb---and so is Jason Campbell, by the way. Don't believe me, look up their Wonderlic Scores on Google. BirdinParadise
Edwards and Kafta should be fine as long as they get a fair amount of reps. Lets not put more into the Qbs than needed even though they would benefit tremendously if we had manning behind the center for two years. What about our receivers and safeties and linebackers. Those positions need a major over haul

One problem with AR's scheme regarding backup qb's and practice time: no reps with the first team! So when something happens in the game, the backup coming in has no connection with the starters out there. Eagle_1960
Sheil, why isn't anyone considering McNabb as our back up? He only ran our offenses for 11 years and owns every QB record the Eagles have. What's the downside for the Eagles? What's the downside for McNabb if no one else wants him? Stan in SC
@Stan, you should be tarred and feathered for even bringing McGagg's name up......and who's to say that Kafka won't be the backup QB and Edwards the #3? Mark1npt- Because #3's are usually reserved for young, developing QBs...not aging journeymen.
Personally, I see the possible signing of Edwards as a back up plan. If they feel Kafka won't be ready as the #2, he'll go another season as #3, and Edwards will be #2. If he is ready...bye, bye, Trent (they'll probably draft a QB late, btw). Nobody ever said he was guaranteed a roster spot if they sign him. phillychaos
Jason Campbell, please. He would be our toughest QB since Jaworski. adamklee

Payton still has a broke neck, Edwards did play last year, McNabb likes to throw vomit/balls to the ground. How about we bring in somebody with potentail urbnasty
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
C'mom now. Birds have Vick and Kafka. Draft another QB. Please!!! Phillyexp
Peyton (with an "e") would be great if healthy but won't happen. I know everyone thinks this is crazy, but 5 is the only guy that can step in and in run the offense the way it was designed to run. Other than Orton, he is the best guy on this list. tbrenpsu
