Report: Eagles work out QB Edwards

One of the positions the Eagles will have to fill this offseason is backup quarterback.

Vince Young filled in for Michael Vick last season, but only signed a one-year deal and is a free agent. Vick missed three games, failed to finish two more and played injured against Arizona last season. In other words, Vick's health was a factor in six of the team's 16 games.

On Tuesday, the Birds worked out quarterback Trent Edwards, according to Adam Caplan.

A third-round pick out of Stanford in 2007, Edwards (6-4, 231) has started 33 games (32 with the Bills and one with the Jaguars). He's completed 60.5 percent of his passes, averaged 6.5 yards per attempt and thrown 26 touchdowns, compared to 30 interceptions. He spent the last preseason with the Raiders, but was released and never caught on with another team. Edwards is 29 years old.

The Eagles went 1-2 with Young as the starter last season, beating the Giants and losing to the Patriots and Seahawks. They also lost two games - against the Falcons and Giants (first meeting) - where Mike Kafka filled in for Vick in the fourth quarter.

We've been over this before, but the Birds clearly need to enter 2012 with the mindset that a backup is going to have to win at least a couple games for them.

RotoWorld recently released a list of free-agent quarterbacks. Here are some of the names: Chad Henne, Jason Campbell, Kyle Orton, David Garrard, Shaun Hill, Byron Leftwich, Sage Rosenfels, Brady Quinn, Drew Stanton, Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman, Dennis Dixon, Charlie Batch, J.P. Losman, Dan Orlovsky, A.J. Feeley, Jeff Garcia.

Interestingly enough, three of the quarterbacks - McNabb, Feeley and Garcia - are ex-Eagles. McNabb was waived late in the season by the Vikings and has gotten a head start on his second career, already appearing as an analyst on ESPN and NFL Network. McNabb said on TV last week that he has a lot of good football left, but no team wanted him in 2011, and his playing days could very well be over.

Feeley has served a backup role with the Birds on two different occasions - from 2001-2002, and again from 2006-2007. He played in five games (starting three) for the Rams in 2011, completing 54.6 percent of his passes with one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Feeley turns 35 in May.

And finally, Garcia signed on with the Texans late in the season as a backup. He will turn 42 next month.

If you missed it from yesterday, I provided a player-by-player breakdown of the Eagles' rookie class.

Kolb will be on that list soon.

Garcia? Is that a released list or an AARP list?

Jeff Garcia is on the list? Isn't he around 40? Edwards can read a defense and has a decent arm, but he's a statue. If he can count to 4 and get rid of the ball he could be okay.

Jason Campbell is far and away the best alternative to all of them. I don't think Orton can be successful in the WCO. He is a vertical, down the field passer.

Dont sign anyone yet. Wait for Peyton Manning to be released in March and go after him hard. Manning to Maclin - Manning to Celek and Manning to McCoy, forget about it!!!

MichaelZoe, I find quarterbacks' win/loss records pretty worthless, but since you asked so nicely, he was 14-19. - SK

Not Edwards, most on the list are washups or hasbens. Edwards hasn't thrown a good ball since he had a concussion, and JP Losman, pleeeeze just give them all air guitars and let them join the mummers.
