Report: Broncos had interest in Asante
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
As we inch closer to the draft, the Asante Samuel trade rumors continue to swirl.
The latest one is out of Denver, where two NFL sources tell The Denver Post's Mike Klis that the Broncos have expressed interest in the veteran cornerback. But, according to the report, they no longer believe they can pull a deal off with the Eagles.
What were the Broncos offering in return? Klis says they presented two options. One involved an unknown player. And the other was for a fifth- or sixth-round pick in the 2012 draft.
Samuel's contract and age are both factors, but the report indicates the Eagles feel they can do better in terms of compensation. And they probably can. But as always, it depends on the market. The good news is that Klis reports "several other teams" have been in talks with the Eagles about Samuel in recent days.
Meanwhiile, Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reports that the Titans are not in the mix for Samuel. He too indicates that they are not willing to match the Eagles' asking price.
The guess here is that the Eagles will continue conversations and pull the trigger on a deal right before the draft, even if that means settling. I have a difficult time seeing Samuel returning and having Juan Castillo try to figure out roles for him, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, when none of them have shown the ability to play inside.
Samuel showed up at the Novacare Complex for workouts this week and told the team's Web site he wants to stay in Philly.
Update: Per Klis, the issue isn't trade compensation, but Samuel's willingness to take a pay cut. He's due a reported $9.5M in 2012.

- Eagles always want too much. If they intend on trading Samuel along with a contract that pays him 9.9 million and on the other side of 30, they should take the best offer and let that man know where he's going so he can prepare himself and his family.I understand it's a business but that doesn't mean they can play with a man's life and the lives of his family. Trade him and get it over with.
- huh? playing with a man's life and his family?? what are you talking about? samuel will get paid $10M this year. they have made his life and that of his family's better than most Americans can ever imagine. you're acting like they are holding him captive. this is a business and samuel knows what he got into when he decided to play football. the eagles, like any organization, will do whatever it takes to make their team better and they have every right to hold out until they get the deal they feel is fair. shut your pie hole.
- Grow up. People with jobs and have actually experienced the business working world know what I mean. Try finding something other than the fries machine and changing the grease at Burger King. He's stating that he wants to stay here, is willing to re-do his contract to have friendly cap number. Eagles haven't even acknowledge it and continue to float his name in a trade. This, my silly friend, is playing with a man's life because no matter what he got himself into he deserves the respect to have the deal done one way or the other. That is called good business.
- Seriously?? The NFL is a business based on contract work. He's been paid over $50 mil over his career to deal with potentially moving every year. There is no reason to trade him now, just to be nice to AS. By waiting until draft day, there's a better chance of getting a better deal. AS will have plenty of time to find a new house before training camp. This is far from playing with his life.

Rather keep him than settle for a 5th and 6th rounder. He's a playmaker, and say what you want, but look back to the last real playoff run they had in 08/09... Two huge plays in the 1st two rounds. The guy shows up when it matters. It's no accident that he has 2 rings. A shame he won't hit some body. sore richard
Bye Bye Asante !!! dmanphilly
Just get rid of him...His contract is holding up McCoy's extension. SilliBilli
You never know when injury happens so having this depth is very good. Keep him (if a decent trade can't happen) and drop a player who is third string elsewhere. psuwelsh
No reason to dump him for a 5th round pick unless we need the cap room to re-sign Shady. If we can't get a 3rd (that improves to a 2nd if Asante makes the Pro Bowl) then just pay the guy for another year - he makes plays. meanness
5th or 6th round draft pick - NO WAY! The guy is one year removed from a Pro Bowl season. He is a defensive playmaker in a passing league. Many teams teams are starting DB's that can't come close to even tying his shoes. nocarp
Best to trade a pick and Asante, to move up in draft. camasbud
Trade him for Dawkins. P Even
I agree with sore richard...Having a glut of pro bowl corners is a great luxury in this "passing league". To assume that there will be no injuries is naive. They can afford to keep him, and maybe he'll take a pay cut to allow for LMac negotions to proceed. Make DRC a backup when using two to three corner sets.
That being said, take a third rounder (fair compensation) if offered! danco225
I sincerely don't think they'll just dump him for the sake of dumping him; even though none of the 3 CB's have shown they can play inside it's not like DRC has shown he can clearly outplay Samuel on the outside so if we keep Asante, so be it. We're in a position of strength here because they manage the cap so well they're not stuck in moving him to sign someone else. Shady's extension has NOTHING to do with 22 being here or not. regassert6
