Report: Broncos had interest in Asante
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
As we inch closer to the draft, the Asante Samuel trade rumors continue to swirl.
The latest one is out of Denver, where two NFL sources tell The Denver Post's Mike Klis that the Broncos have expressed interest in the veteran cornerback. But, according to the report, they no longer believe they can pull a deal off with the Eagles.
What were the Broncos offering in return? Klis says they presented two options. One involved an unknown player. And the other was for a fifth- or sixth-round pick in the 2012 draft.
Samuel's contract and age are both factors, but the report indicates the Eagles feel they can do better in terms of compensation. And they probably can. But as always, it depends on the market. The good news is that Klis reports "several other teams" have been in talks with the Eagles about Samuel in recent days.
Meanwhiile, Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reports that the Titans are not in the mix for Samuel. He too indicates that they are not willing to match the Eagles' asking price.
The guess here is that the Eagles will continue conversations and pull the trigger on a deal right before the draft, even if that means settling. I have a difficult time seeing Samuel returning and having Juan Castillo try to figure out roles for him, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, when none of them have shown the ability to play inside.
Samuel showed up at the Novacare Complex for workouts this week and told the team's Web site he wants to stay in Philly.
Update: Per Klis, the issue isn't trade compensation, but Samuel's willingness to take a pay cut. He's due a reported $9.5M in 2012.

Only let him go if they get something close to value. Cornerback is a position that REQUIRES depth, so rather than knee-jerk to a trade how about restructuring his deal. If he truly wants to stay he might be willing to do it... especially as he's reportedly willing to restructure if traded. Zaknafein
Stop with the trade for Dawkins stuff. He is a free agent and he is old and very hurt. I'd let Asante go for a 4th or 5th that turns into a 3rd or 4th with good play. That's about the best they are going to do at this point. andrewc23
That is not fair compensation. He is a Pro Bowl CB. Paul SoTX
If Asante took a big pay cut and agreed to move to free safety I would rather keep him for 2-3 more years as a free safety since he seems better suited as a ballhawking center field type then a press and tackle corner. A 5th or 6th is not good enough comp. and unless we get a 3rd or 4th I would try to keep him but not in his old role. connorjr- Not a bad idea. The only flaw is Ashante doesn't tackle well and a free safety has to actually hit and tackle. There is more to being a ball hawk than just laying back watching the QB and jumping on the ball. Remember that hit Dawkins put on Crumpler in that NFC Title game, Alge didn't come back after that hit.
Would rather watch 22, with his great interceptions every year, than D(What, me tackle?)RC. DHowardisdaman
People are overvaluing what you would get for a 30+ y/o high contract corner back. If you only get a 2nd round pick for a starting QB in a trade, what do you expect for a corner that is paid A LOT and that you don't want? He is only worth a 4th or 5th rounder. It sounds like the Birds are ok with the compensation but that he will not take the pay cut that they are demanding as part of the deal... andrewc23
I wouldn't feel sorry for Asante Samuel. The man is going to make more money this year than 99.99% of the population will ever make in a lifetime. But having said that, the Eagles should trade him already if that's their intent, so they can move on with their plans for the team in 2012. SteveS11
The Eagles NEED to keep Asante Samuel and if he has offered to redo his deal, they should take him up on it (I haven't heard that report). The idea of giving him up for a 5th round pick is ludicrous. But that's not as ludicrous as the idea of him playing free safety. Any fool suggeting that needs their head examined! He is not a tackler and is ridiculously small compared to most receivers in the NFL, let alone safeties. He would be a disaster at safety. But unless they get a top tier corner in the draft, they need to keep him because either DRC (who hasn't even shown that he can hold Asante's Jock anyway so far) or Nnamdi is going to get hurt at some point. eaglesphreak23
Patriots will trade down with one of their 2 first rounders, trade a 3 or 4 and get asante back. He will be moved regardless at this point, they want to dump that salary rather than have depth. THEaglesFan, you lose on that one, the Strangler is exactly right and resorting to your name calling isnt making your point any more valid. peteike
now that we have Bowles coaching DBs, how about moving DC to free safety? LA Mike
He wants to stay, and he can still play. Move 24 to safety and renegotiate 22s contract. Two birds, one stone. Are they going to get someone in the 3rd round that is as good? No chance. Whatsoever. chriscollins
Not to mention that the scouting report outside of Philly on DRC is that he is a complete stiff. Trade him for a 5th. UncleStosh- If the guy would tackle at ALL I would say keep him, but Im sick of watching him wimp out on physical receivers or any of them for that matter.
Shady's extension has NOTHING to do with 22 being here or not.
^^^Absolutely wrong. AS cap number is near 10 million for this year. McCoy's extension will have a signing bonus near 25 million with at least half of that will be applied to this year's cap.
