Report: Broncos had interest in Asante

POSTED: Friday, April 20, 2012, 8:42 AM
The Broncos have expressed interest in Eagles CB Asante Samuel, according to a report. (Yong Kim/Staff file photo)

As we inch closer to the draft, the Asante Samuel trade rumors continue to swirl.

The latest one is out of Denver, where two NFL sources tell The Denver Post's Mike Klis that the Broncos have expressed interest in the veteran cornerback. But, according to the report, they no longer believe they can pull a deal off with the Eagles.

What were the Broncos offering in return? Klis says they presented two options. One involved an unknown player. And the other was for a fifth- or sixth-round pick in the 2012 draft.

Samuel's contract and age are both factors, but the report indicates the Eagles feel they can do better in terms of compensation. And they probably can. But as always, it depends on the market. The good news is that Klis reports "several other teams" have been in talks with the Eagles about Samuel in recent days.

Meanwhiile, Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reports that the Titans are not in the mix for Samuel. He too indicates that they are not willing to match the Eagles' asking price.

The guess here is that the Eagles will continue conversations and pull the trigger on a deal right before the draft, even if that means settling. I have a difficult time seeing Samuel returning and having Juan Castillo try to figure out roles for him, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, when none of them have shown the ability to play inside.

Samuel showed up at the Novacare Complex for workouts this week and told the team's Web site he wants to stay in Philly.

Update: Per Klis, the issue isn't trade compensation, but Samuel's willingness to take a pay cut. He's due a reported $9.5M in 2012.

I agree with Asante in this situation. He does not want to be traded and on top of that you want him to take a pat cut? Thats just bad business, i wish him the best wherever he goes. After all, he was our best corner last year and now all of a sudden hes the odd man out

On Madden, I have Nnamdi at Free Safety, Jaiquan at Strong...DRC and Assante at the corners. I get picks all day.

Too bad things don't work out in reality as they do on a video game.

He wants to stay, and he can still play. Move 24 to safety and renegotiate 22s contract. Two birds, one stone. Are they going to get someone in the 3rd round that is as good? No chance. Whatsoever.

WHy are we trading Asante. He was willing to lower his contract to 5mill. I think he's worth it

Just get anything for him at this point. It's addition by subtraction, getting his cap number off the books in order to resign McCoy.

Who cares? Let him go to the Sixers. They need help too. PAY SHADY! That's more important!

Does anyone remember why we got Samuel in the first place? It was because in 2007 the Eagles' defense only had something like 18 takeaways, 11 of them INTs. In 2008 Samuel contributed to a defense that had more takeaways than our offense gave it away, and by 2009 the Eagles had more INTs (25) than the offense gave it away (23). We were +15 in 2009. +9 in 2010. Now we drop to -14 in 2011 and we want to give away our takeaway specialist? Samuel only had 3 INTs in 2011 but that's within his normal career range and that was on a completely dissheveled defense. With our offense giving it away 38 times in 2011 we need more turnover generation on Defense than ever. Giving away Samuel is idiotic. And if the Eagles think they're rethinking character well here's evidence that is a bunch of BS.

Didn't Detroit offer a 2nd last year? Now they'll be lucky to get a 4th. Good job, Howie.
    Only in Philly...

If his contract is not guaranteed, they can always release him. That almost 10 million dollars can buy them a lot of "gap-fillers" without a low draft choice. Something is going to happen in the next 5 - 6 days. That is an almost "fer sure."

This happens every time the FO tries to trade/cut a guy. Yes, Asante made some big plays during his time in Philly. But he was also part of some horrific red zone defenses, and was allergic to tackling. Take off the rose-colored glasses and you see an above-average CB who's 31 and not getting any younger. The Iggles got rid of Dawk; they can, and should, get what they can for Asante.

Hey Sore Richard, Your right, he doesn't hit anybody. He's a great
ball hawk. But teams have gotten smart and not thrown at him...They
throw underneath, then run right at him...Cause he WON'T TACKLE!!!
