Reid: Childress a great fit in Cleveland

When Marty Mornhinweg's name surfaced as a potential head-coaching candidate in Oakland and Indianapolis, many wondered whether Brad Childress would return to Philadelphia to replace him.

While Mornhinweg got an interview with the Raiders, he was not offered the job and remains with the Eagles.

Childress, meanwhile, was hired last week as the Browns' new offensive coordinator. And while Andy Reid has yet to update us with what he has in store for his own staff, he spoke to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer about how Childress will fit with head coach Pat Shurmur.

"Pat's a heck of a play-caller, and Brad's a heck of a play-caller, and I think that's a heck of a combination," Reid said. "Both of them can bounce things off of each other. That's what Brad did here with me, and that's what Pat did here with me. So, whether I was calling the plays or they were calling the plays, we had an open communication where we could talk and make the best of whatever situation there was."

The three "heck of a" references in one sentence may be a record - even for Reid.

"You hire guys that are driven and smart, and both of them fall under that category," Reid said. "Both of them have a great work ethic, and they understand the game, and they have a whole lot of football smarts. They're smart guys away from the football field, too, but they really know the game."

As for Reid's silence in Philadelphia, I don't have a big problem with it. If he doesn't have his staff in place yet and is still trying to get things figured out, why call a press conference and say nothing? That would only draw more criticism. I'm not saying he's going to unveil some master plan in the end, but it's never been Reid's M.O. to update the media and the public with what he's doing behind the scenes. Not sure why anyone's expecting him to start now.

REID ON FOURTH DOWN

Jim Armstrong recently wrote a piece for Football Outsiders, which measured how aggressive coaches were on fourth down last season.

He uses a metric called Aggressiveness Index. Here's the definition:

To compute AI, we analyzed fourth-down decisions when the offense was in the opponent’s territory, where a coach’s tendencies were most distinguished from his peers. We also excluded obvious catch-up situations: Third quarter, trailing by 15 or more points; Fourth quarter, trailing by 9 or more points; Last five minutes of the game, trailing by any amount. AI measures how often a coach attempted a fourth-down conversion compared to the league averages in similar situations, based on the field position and the distance needed for a first down.

In 2011, Reid was the 12th-most aggressive coach in the league, going for it on nine of the 46 situations described above. Among the most aggressive coaches were Steve Spagnuolo, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Smith and Sean Payton. Ron Rivera, John Fox, Leslie Frazier and Rex Ryan were among the least aggressive.

The Aggressiveness Index dates back to 1992. In that time, Reid has been the least aggressive coach in the NFL. Mike Holmgren, Mike Tomlin and Rex Ryan are also near the bottom.

Guess who's the most aggressive? Rich Kotite.

Bill Belichick, Smith and George Seifert are also near the top.

"Rhodes was in the playoff 2 out of 4 years 50%...that is decent."

So 2 for 4 or 50% is decent, but 10 for 13 or almost 76%, "is BELOW AVERAGE TO WEAK. TERRIBLY OVER-RATED MEDIOCRE GARBAGE"?

lol, um Troke...the point is Andy has had average results, similiar to the other 3 coaches immediatley before him. Since 1990 THE EAGLES have averaged a respectable 9-7 finish, without a SB, and about a .500 record in the playoffs. That is with Buddy, Kotite, and Rhodes. Rhodes was not a great HD, although decent but a great DC and he had an eye for talent at both coordinator and defense. In fact Rhodes only got 4 years and won Coach of the Year in 1995, or 25% Reid has won Coach of the Year I think 3 times in 13 years...or less then Rhodes 25%. Rhodes as a sane person, got burned out after a few eyars and went 3-13. Delusional Andy who is not in touch with planet earth, does not get burned out but instead is happy to do the same thing over and over, so he avoids the 3-13 firing season, but also does not win a SB or beat the best teams. .350 against winning teams is terrible. 10-9 in the playoffs is nothing special, uhhh I think that would be called "mediocre". Kotite was 1-1 and averaged a 9-7 finish in 4 years. Andy Reid is 10-9 and avaerages a 9-7 finish after 13 years. He took credit for that run from 01-04 but most of those best defensive players, and some of the coordinators were left over from Rhodes, picked by Rhodes, or picked or signed by Modrak. And even still he usually just went 1-1 each year in the playoffs winning only one game to get to the championship, and them promplty blowing it. 1-1, .500 in the playoffs does not win superbowls. .350 against winning teams DOES NOT WIN SUPERBOWLS. HE has been about as good as the 3 caoches before him, and sometimes worse. Now you see a team built completely by Andy UNABLE TO EVEN WIN ONE PLAYOFF GAME IN THREE YEARS. THAT IS PATHETIC. 5 BLOWN 4th QUARTER LEADS, NOT ONLY WORSE THEN THE 3 GUYS BEFORE HIM, WORSE THEN EVERY COACH IN NFL HISTORY. INSANITY PATHETIC. N E V E R

I want to see Charlie Garner play the role of Humphrey Bogart in the remake of the "Caine Mutiny."

Hey Charlie, please do not say anything about Ray Rhodes being a decent coach. He may have been the worst coach the Eagles ever had. His draft picks included Jon Harris and Mike Mamula. And your boy Garner was drafted by Kotite. Additionally, he had Sean Payton on his staff and brought in Dana Bible as O-Coordinator. Yeah, he knew a lot. Besides Tra Thomas, he drafted nobody on offense. Get a clue moron.

Oh, and by the way Belichek's assistants have done nothing either. In fact, I am pretty sure that none of his assistants have ever won a playoff game (Mangini, Crennel, McDaniel) and also remember Weis was awful at Notre Dame.

Wasn't Spagnolo a Reid assistant and then went on to won a Super Bowl as D Coordinator under Coughlin? I believe he is the only one... Prior Eagles assistant within the past 10 -15 yrs that won a Superbowl in addition to Spags and Gruden was Sean Payton. I guess he was too good to keep around too LOL.

The teeam could use some new blood to help with drafting, run the defense, and help with playcalling and clock mgmt. Wow, what a gold standard.....

Sorry Spagnuolo doesn't count under the traditional definition of "coaching tree." Each branch of the tree shows a relationship between one coach and their predecessor. The relationship shown on trees are of an assistant coach to a head coach. The former assistant branches out from the head coach that they used to work for and himself becomes a head coach. Some assistants who became head coaches went on to branch out into coaching trees of their own. Soome even go on to develop their own trees like Holmgren from Walsh, Jeff Fisher fro George Seifert (who also coached under Walsh), Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy from Marty Schottenheimer and on and on. Reid is DYING to get that notoriety. Therefore, Spagnuolo falls directly under the Tom Coughlin coaching tree as he went on to become HEAD COACH of the Rams after leaving the NY Giants coached by none other than Tom Coughlin.

Hindsight...you have become the laughing stock of the site. No matter what you think of Reid comparing Kotite and Rhodes' records to his is ludicrous.

WMR, the lad would have no idea what you are talking about but I could see him in relentless pursuit of missing strawberries...and it would be Reid's fault. No comment about the balls...

And Hindsight, what is the FORMER significance to 57.4%, which you said couldn't be exceeded to win the SB?...man up chump.

lol, "pizza" your wrong on just about everything as usual. During the regular season The Pats and Giants were at 58% passing...until they just both pounded the run 30+ times a game for three straight weeks to make it to the SB...putting thier average going into the game probably at 56 or 57%...very close to the max, but not over. Also, I would love to take a voyage with Andy to Pitcairn Island. I am sure he has the proper atire of Tropical Shirts already on hand for a long stay...

I've followed the Eagles since the Mike McCormack/Roman Gabriel years. In all those years, I've never known a coach to snub the local press as this current coach has done (for 13 plus years). In good times and a lot of bad times, every coach but this one has stepped up and had been accountable.

The writers and press are the only conduit we have to get into what the coach is thinking. When this coach snubs the local press, in reality he thumbs his nose at you and I and all the loyal season ticket holders. Going to other NFL cities newspapers to interview and quote about coaching hires is just adding further insult to injury.

His arrogance towards the Philadelphia fan continues to astound me.
