Questioning Kolb's value

POSTED: Saturday, May 21, 2011, 2:59 PM

As Kevin Kolb's future continues to be a frequently-discussed topic nationally, opinion on the quarterback's value seems to vary.

The latest analyst to chime in is NFL Network's Michael Lombardi.

Lombardi joined Sports 620 KTAR in Arizona and said he doesn't see Kolb being worth a first-round pick.

"It's hard to watch tape on Kevin Kolb and think he's worth a first round pick," Lombardi said. "It's going to require somebody selling him in the building and someone has to know him.

"When you study the tape on Kolb, it's not overly impressive," Lombardi continued. "It's very disappointing at times. I know Philadelphia doesn't like me when I say this, I think ultimately if he did have to play Philly would have been a 7-9 team. If it wasn't for Michael Vick it would have been bad."

The truth is there are probably NFL teams that agree with Lombardi. Kolb has only attempted 319 passes in his career. Whichever club trades for him will be taking a risk. But that's the case with all the other quarterbacks that will be on the market, and it's also the case when teams draft QBs.

There are certain schemes that will fit Kolb's skill set better than others. I think that's why you hear such varying opinions on his talent and his future.

As I've said before, the key to the Eagles' compensation is the market. If there are multiple teams showing serious interest in Kolb, the Birds are more likely to get a first-round pick. If it looks like most teams have filled that need and only one franchise is interested, the Birds might have to settle for less compensation.

Meanwhile, Lombardi said he thought Cleveland could be a landing spot for Kolb. The Browns have been pretty clear all offseason that they will not pursue him, though, and that has continued. A league source tells Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer the Browns won't be making a run at Kolb. As always, what teams say and what they do can be different, but right now, it doesn't look like Cleveland will be a player.

And finally, while Lombardi doesn't think Kolb is worth a first-round pick, ESPN's Adam Schefter thinks the Eagles will get at least that much. Schefter says the Birds were offered a first-round pick and more last offseason, and he expects that to happen again this offseason once moves are allowed to be made.

the question is...do u need a qb 2 start game 1????? if so do u draft a qb in round 1 or 2 or do u go after kolb? if u think a rookie esp. cam. gives u a better chance 2 win, put down the crack pipe. That rookie class of qbs will be busts except 4 kapernick.......& i hate the niners.

Must be another slow day in the sports media. Still beating the same dead horse. Give it a break until trading can actually begin.

Mike Vick WILL get injured this year. He WILL miss multiple Games in what is essentially a Super Bowl or Bust Season 4 Reid. Does He, or the Fans for that matter, trust Kafka, V Young, Hasslebeck, etc to win Multiple Games for the Eagles? I sure don't. Having a back-up QB who knows the Eagles System for Mike Vick is of extra importance this Season with the whole Lockout/No Practice Deal. If He trades Kolb for a 1st Rd Pick, He will probably use it next year to trade down anyway for multiple 4/5/6/7 Round Picks.

All you losers talking about Vick getting injured, get a clue all qbs get injured, you just talk about his more. Aaron Rogers was out 2 games for concussions, Tom Brady had to have surgery again after the season for an injury, the only reason why he did not miss any games is because he does not do anything but stand in one spot and throw the ball, Jay Cutler was injured, Big Ben broke his nose, Payton Manning will just fall down before he lets you hit him and how did he look in the playoffs (horrible). Sanchez was injured, Eli, well it does not matter, he was a liability on the field, Romo injured, Kitna, injured, McNabb injured, Drew Brees was injured and played through the season had a horrible year. Rivers was not injured missed the playoffs altogether. So stop talking about Vick getting injured all players get injured.

Mike Lombardi says Kolb could end up in Cleveland? Thats all you need to know about his opinions on things..Cleveland has up and coming Colt McCoy at QB who got substantial playing time as a rookie..No chance that Cleveland spends a big pick for another QB.. Terrible predicition Lombardi. I agree that many are overvaluing Kolb, but I do feel the Eagles will get a 1st rounder for him in 2012, or put together a deal with either Arizona or Seattle for a pick that was taken in this years draft.

If Christian Ponder is a first round pick, then Kevin Kolb is worth a first rounder. No question. Don't know if there's another team that agrees with the Vikes, though.

Kolb will go to a West Coast offense team, probably the Vikings.

No, Andy does not trust Kafka as back-up to the oft-injured Vick.

In a stirring twist of fate, a QB with great knowledge of Reid's scheme will be available (no one wants him) and help the Eagles. Number 5 returns. You heard it here first.

Why on Earth would the Vikings trade for Kolb when they just took a QB w/ the 12th overall pick in this year's draft?

    . . . because you rarely win w/ rookie QB's (exceptions: Ben R. - Pgh. & Mat R. - Atl.)

Lombardi always rags on the Eagles. Andy took his knees out in the past and Lombardi has had a grudge ever since. He was the GM for the Raiders as they sank into oblivion a few years ago.

he's right, and if you knew anything about raiders, Al controls all. GM's just a show. Kolb would have had Eagles at 7-9 last year..The Eagles would be stealing if they get a 1st
