Questioning Kolb's value

POSTED: Saturday, May 21, 2011, 2:59 PM

As Kevin Kolb's future continues to be a frequently-discussed topic nationally, opinion on the quarterback's value seems to vary.

The latest analyst to chime in is NFL Network's Michael Lombardi.

Lombardi joined Sports 620 KTAR in Arizona and said he doesn't see Kolb being worth a first-round pick.

"It's hard to watch tape on Kevin Kolb and think he's worth a first round pick," Lombardi said. "It's going to require somebody selling him in the building and someone has to know him.

"When you study the tape on Kolb, it's not overly impressive," Lombardi continued. "It's very disappointing at times. I know Philadelphia doesn't like me when I say this, I think ultimately if he did have to play Philly would have been a 7-9 team. If it wasn't for Michael Vick it would have been bad."

The truth is there are probably NFL teams that agree with Lombardi. Kolb has only attempted 319 passes in his career. Whichever club trades for him will be taking a risk. But that's the case with all the other quarterbacks that will be on the market, and it's also the case when teams draft QBs.

There are certain schemes that will fit Kolb's skill set better than others. I think that's why you hear such varying opinions on his talent and his future.

As I've said before, the key to the Eagles' compensation is the market. If there are multiple teams showing serious interest in Kolb, the Birds are more likely to get a first-round pick. If it looks like most teams have filled that need and only one franchise is interested, the Birds might have to settle for less compensation.

Meanwhile, Lombardi said he thought Cleveland could be a landing spot for Kolb. The Browns have been pretty clear all offseason that they will not pursue him, though, and that has continued. A league source tells Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer the Browns won't be making a run at Kolb. As always, what teams say and what they do can be different, but right now, it doesn't look like Cleveland will be a player.

And finally, while Lombardi doesn't think Kolb is worth a first-round pick, ESPN's Adam Schefter thinks the Eagles will get at least that much. Schefter says the Birds were offered a first-round pick and more last offseason, and he expects that to happen again this offseason once moves are allowed to be made.

Even if they get a first round pick for him, you have to look at the trade down and drafting of Kolb as a huge mistake. They basically will have traded a 2007 first round pick for a backup QB, Stewart Bradley, CJ Gaddis, and a 2012 first round pick. I hardley see the value in trading a first round pick for some moderatley useful talent and a 1st rounder 5 years later.

Mabus, Kolb has been a bargain as a legit #2 QB in the NFL.

I am not impressed with Lombardi's opinions, Remember when the Eagles were going to trade McNabb , he said they would get a first rounder. Then after the deal was made, how stupid the Eagles were for trading McNabb. As I posted several weeks ago, there must be at least 3 stories a week on Kolb. Some people show their anger at him in the posts, but its not his fault the stories are written. These writers are just looking for topics to write about, and Kolb is the target. And when things get really boring, a McNabb story surfaces to keep fan interest.

All of you people are so worried about Vick getting injured...and you think trading Kolb will be a bad thing if he does?? I don't get it, Kolb sucks...if Vick gets injured, KK is not the answer...get rid of him ASAP

"ESPN's Adam Schefter thinks the Eagles will get at least that much. Schefter says the Birds were offered a first-round pick and more last offseason"... And soooo they traded McNabb for a 2nd and a 4th??? Somehow I doubt the validity of Schefters rumor.

Lombardi is an idiot, you might as well find a hobo picking through a dumpster and get his opinion.

Kolb presents less risk and similar to upside to most QBs drafted in the first round given his NFL experience. Many first round QB picks aren't in football after 3 years. That won't happen to Kolb. We know he can start. The question is how many games will he win and the same cannot be said for drafted first round QBs in round one.

Lombardi told the truth and he is not the only one that has said the Brian Baldinger said it. Others scouts have said it also. If you listen to the commentary on what Kolb did last year, most say he looked lost on the field. I wish him well but unless you put him behind a line like Brady has he will be out with a concussion on his first start.

Keep Kolb to give us a chance of winning the Mike Lombardi trophy if Vick goes down.

4 years in and we are still talking 1] "potential", 2] "put him in the right situation" and 3] "wait and see". After all this time 1]we should be seeing the potential played out on the field in wins, 2]he had the job handed to him on a platter so so much for the situation and 3] how long do we have to wait? One win over a half way decent team in 4 years for how many millions and no real consensus of he can really do. Personally ...whatever we can get. I've seen all I need to see. And if Vick goes down people think KK will be coming to the rescue? Based on what? Mike McMahon, Vince McMahon, Vince Young, Steve Young, Steve Allen will get you the same result as KK.
