No tag for Houshmandzadeh?

POSTED: Thursday, February 12, 2009, 11:34 AM

Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is not expecting to get the franchise tag, and if he does, he could make things very difficult in Cincinnati.

"I don't want any part of the tag," he told the Dayton Daily News. "The more I think about, I don't think I'll be franchised. It's a lot of money. If you franchise somebody what are you saying about the player? Obviously, you think he is that type of player, and if you think he's that type of player then you're franchising him.

"That shows you within itself that OK we think he's one of the better players and we're going to franchise him. If that's the case give him a contract like your franchising him. That's how I see it and don't see the franchise thing happening."

Houshmandzadeh went on to say he wouldn't participate in offseason activities if the team tags him.

"Coach Lewis made an emphasis of wanting guys at the offseason programs, on the field sessions and things of that nature. If I get franchised I'm not going to be there," he told the newspaper.

"So it goes against everything that the coaches want. You can't have the coach come out and say one thing and do another. If you do, then you're not going to have the cohesiveness he said he wanted when the season ended."

The Bengals would have to pay Houshmandzadeh $9.88 million for one season if they tagged him. NFL Network's Adam Schefter has previously reported that Cincinnati will not use the franchise tag.

As for where he'll play in 2009, Houshmandzadeh didn't sound too broken up about possibly finding a new home.

"It would be cool to remain with the Bengals because I got my start there," Houshmandzadeh said. "I'm not a person that prefers lots of change in my life, but if change has to happen, then change has to happen."

If you missed it (you'd have to be living under a rock for this to be the case), Houshmandzadeh told ESPN 950's Mike Missanelli last week that he could be a nice fit in Philadelphia.

Teams have until Feb. 19 to use the tag.

This is going nowhere and I am done responding. We were having a discussion on one topic where you were proven wrong. You then tried to prove yourself right by comparing an apple to an orange to prove it is better then other apples? Mr. Calabrese, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone reading this blog is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I have concerns with Boldin. He gets hurt a lot. TJ is a much better receiver than he gets credit for being. He has outplayed Ocho Cinco the last two years, and even put up solid numbers with a sub par QB for just about the entire 2008 season. I say sign TJ, and trade for Tony Gonzales. Those two, plus Celek become your redzone targets, with Curtis, Jackson, Avant and Celek stretching the field between the 20s. At that point you probably still have the two number ones (because it shouldn't take a #1 to get Gonzales) to get a RB to complement Westbrook and fill another hole (O-line or D-back?). TJ and Gonzales make this offense instantly more dynamic and potent.

Lito's trade value has dropped since last offseason. They'll be lucky to get a 4th round draft pick for him. They'll probably have to package him with a higher pick to get anything of value.

Back to the subject of the article: I wouldn't want this immature jerk on my team. He's a loser. He's going to skip the preseason if they put a tag on him? Then says he'd be ok staying with the team? He sounds like a 4 year old. And not particularly smart. I want nothing to do with him. He'll damage his team that he would also consider returning to? Would that be considered selfish? Come on. I'd boo if the Eagles' won the Super Bowl with this guy. These guys have no concept of how lucky they are. He can catch a stinking ball and thinks he's entitled to tens of millions. Pretty disgusting with what is going on in our country today. I'm sure this guy has no clue.
