Mikell: That wasn't Eagles defense

The Eagles' first-team defense had a rough go Thursday night against Peyton Manning and company.

The Colts went 81 yard on 12 plays for a touchdown on its opening drive. And it looked like a blown coverage from one of the team's newcomers led to a wide open Reggie Wayne catching a 76-yard touchdown later in the quarter.

Eagles safety Quintin Mikell, who has been given the title of leader on defense, was disappointed with the way his team played.

"I don’t even know how to put it into words," he said. "That wasn’t Eagles defense, that wasn’t what we are about right there. We need to work on a lot of things. Whenever you come in against a good team like that, you can’t really make mistakes. We had a lot of mistakes out there and we have to get better than that. That was not Eagles defense."

On the score to Wayne, it looked like cornerback Ellis Hobbs was passing the WR off to a safety. The only problem? There was no safety to pick Wayne up. Mikell gave the Colts credit for the play.

"That’s a good play that they had," Mikell said. "They had two guys running through the zone on one of our safeties and that’s a tough position. Any time you have a great quarterback like Peyton Manning it’s tough. But that point aside, we don’t have any excuses. We’ve got to make the plays, so at the end of the day we’ve just got to get better."

I'm about to take a look at the entire 12-play drive the Colts put together to see what exactly happened with the Eagles' defense.
