McNabb's work ethic questioned

It seems likely that Donovan McNabb's days as a starting quarterback in the NFL are over.

The man who holds several Eagles franchise records and helped the team get to its second-ever Super Bowl was benched this week as the Vikings will instead go with rookie Christian Ponder.

In six games (five of them losses), McNabb completed 60.3 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He averaged just 6.6 yards per attempt for a QB rating of 82.9.

But according to Mike Lombardi of NFL Network, McNabb's benching was about more than just his on-the-field play:

McNabb is at a point in his career that he does not seem to want to put in the time, willing to show up late for meetings and practice, and expects to just play well. He failed to really grasp the offense in Minnesota (as he did in Washington), having trouble spitting the plays out quickly -- which meant the play sheet on his arm got bigger and bigger. It did not take long before McNabb's lack of commitment was seen by the older players, causing them to understand that a move had to be made.

It's amazing how bad things have gotten for McNabb since Andy Reid dealt him to the Redskins on Easter Sunday before the 2010 season. He had a disastrous year in Washington before Mike Shanahan and company shipped him off to Minnesota. And now, things have gotten just as bad with the Vikings.

As part of the trade this summer, McNabb reportedly signed a new, one-year deal worth $5M, meaning he'll be a free agent after the season. At 34, he's not over the hill in terms of NFL quarterbacks, but it's difficult to imagine any team bringing him on board to start after the way the past two seasons have gone.

HARRISON UPDATE

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that doctors believe they successfully removed the tumor in Jerome Harrison's brain during surgery on Friday.

The Eagles traded for Harrison last week, but the deal was voided after doctors discovered the tumor. The Lions have placed him on the reserve/non-football illness list.
