McNabb: I'm looking at 3 teams

POSTED: Friday, June 29, 2012, 11:09 AM
Donovan McNabb thinks the Eagles would have still gotten to a Super Bowl without Terrell Owens. (Ron Cortes / Staff Photographer)

With training camps set to open in about three weeks, Donovan McNabb still does not have a team.

In an interview with NBC SportsTalk, the former Eagles quarterback said he still plans on playing in the NFL.

"The most important thing for me is I have about three teams that I’m looking at - a team that obviously has a solid running game, has weapons on the outside, a defense that’s been playing well and playing well together and that’s ready to win right now," McNabb said.

The opening of the interview was very awkward (video below) as McNabb basically stared into the camera and tried to convince viewers that teams were interested in him. He didn't clarify whether he was looking for a starting or backup job, but he put the chances of his return at "80 to 90 percent."

On another note, McNabb was asked about Terrell Owens and specifically whether the Eagles would have ever reached the Super Bowl without the playmaking wide receiver.

"It’s tough to say. I think we would have," McNabb said. "We’d been there at the edge at the cuff for so many years. I think we were just kind of biting at the bit to get there. What we did was we brought T.O. in and that gave us that extra boost we needed to get there.

"I feel like we would have made it, yes. The fact that he did come over and help us and gave us that extra push that we needed on the offensive side, helped not only the offense, but helped the defense as well."

Of course, technically, the Eagles did get to the Super Bowl without T.O., considering Owens didn't play in the team's first two playoff games that year. But he obviously played a huge role in their 13-win season.

The question of what would have happened had McNabb and Owens played more years together is one of the great "what-ifs" in Philadelphia sports history. Earlier this offseason, during a radio interview, Brian Westbrook looked back on what could have been.

McNabb reached three NFC championship games before Owens and one after, but never again played in the Super Bowl.

He was asked to reflect on his time in Philadelphia and had positive things to say, but it's clear McNabb has been paying attention to the fact that the Eagles have not won a playoff game since he left.

"Obviously there are a lot of people in Philadelphia right now who would love to have that same success we had," McNabb said.

And finally, he was asked to identify the best player he ever played with. McNabb first said it was tough to pick just one, but eventually settled on Brian Dawkins.

"When you think of a great player who dominated the game at his position, when he was out on the field, everyone on the opposing side knew where he was lined up, I would say Brian Dawkins," he said.

Its funny how time changes your perception. Back in 2002 03 I was championing Mcnabb's cause. Telling anybody who would listen how he never had any wideouts and how he is carrying a offensiveless offense to nfc championships. How other qb's had good weapons and Mcnabb had torrance small and charles johnson. Then after year 4 of his career Andy started tooling the offense and he decided to become a pocket qb that also was a ground keeper. I wasnt sure for the longest time if Mcnabb was trying to protect his recievers or just too big to keep his arm in the air long enough to follow through. Like he lazy on the tail end of his throws or just throwing balls at people instead of spinning passes. His Technique sucked. Compare him with Vick and he makes Vick look like a technition. Qb coach? Come on man.. Does anybody really need to learn how to make the hot read or checkdown the first option in EVERY read when the real first option isnt there. Thats why Reid always had to be so creative with playcreating. Mcnabb went from the bomb to the 5 yard dump. I went from being his biggest fan thinking he was highly underrated to thinking he was a spoiled brat tht Reid had to design special plays for just to keep him relevant. The Cowboys retired Mcnabb in the playoffs when they said they knew how to shut him down. He has big games and then bad games.. No consistency in the middle of the field. Just air guitars and ingrown toe nails on recievers that have been hit in the foot too many times. Do yall remember those games. Quarter after Quarter of mcnabb smiling putting his hands up capping while another pass is fumbled to the ground because it was thrown at the recievers shin? He went from being loved to hated. I appreciated young mcnabb. Hated the new guy who thought he could sit in the pocket for 4 hours and throw a checkdown to westbrook.

McNabb was a GREAT fantasy football QB. He'll get you 400 yards passing and three touchdowns! Hell yeah!

But then in the real world, he'll lose the game with those meaningless stats! His records are all padded with junk YAC's because he would always dump off to Westbrooke who would run for 10 yards or so. I'd like to see what his stats are without the YAC number! 2,000 yards passing maybe?

McSapp, much like Iggy-duller, are athletes that could have been oh so much more to their teams but underachieved. The Mike Vick Experience is a WAY better QB than McSlabb and he will prove it this year. Fat Andy had to design check downs for Donowhine because he was destroying the new turf in the Linc. Poor Mcnagg. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Three teams he's looking at? That's all he's doing too..........."looking at them"......! GO EAGLES!

The only thing worse than a young, dumb stupid McSoftie is an old, dumb stupid McSoftie. Should of picked Ricky, as least they got to move on right away.

I liked McNabb when he was with the Eagles. When he was young and before he got hurt, he was a good QB. He never really had the weapons to work with. Then TO came and they finally got to the SB but lost to a good NE team and McNabb didn't have his greatest game. He probably has a right to feel vindicated that the Eagles haven't been the same since he left. But he wouldn't have been much better. He's just not that good now and he should take some responsibility for it. He sounds like a fool now. I don't know if he's trying to be funny or he doesn't care but he needs to tone it down. No one wants him and not everyone agrees that he was the greatest QB of his era.

I'd take Donovan back in a second as an Eagles back-up QB compared to the 2 worthless ones we currently have.

Hey I called it. I posted this week that no real news was coming out of Eagles land, and that we needed a good McNabb interview to get everyone going, and here we have it. Can't keep a good man down.

Mama McNabb;s little boy is delusional. He's "looking at 3 teams"; unfortunately, none of them are looking at him. It's a joke how this guy keeps trying to stay relevant. You're washed up, worm killer. Go home to Mama and eat your soup.

Here is how his search will go. The three other teams will turn him down to be a starting QB. McNabb will somehow fault the three teams for not seeing the foresight of picking him or Donny Mac will use the excuse that he turned the other teams down because they were not on the “same page” as him and that he feels at home on ESPN as their new commentator.

Zeru pretty much sums up the McNabb timeline. The Superbowl was the start of the downslide, as I see it. He never was a great leader, but he sure could play.
But he hit his ceiling physically and psychologically in 2004 season. Injuries, ego, failure to improve his game, defensiveness, and slow decline of Birds' defense all led to his being an object of disdain, instead of possibly a champion.

He still can't move on. I wish they would stop asking him, it's kind of sad
