McNabb: I'm looking at 3 teams

POSTED: Friday, June 29, 2012, 11:09 AM
Donovan McNabb thinks the Eagles would have still gotten to a Super Bowl without Terrell Owens. (Ron Cortes / Staff Photographer)

With training camps set to open in about three weeks, Donovan McNabb still does not have a team.

In an interview with NBC SportsTalk, the former Eagles quarterback said he still plans on playing in the NFL.

"The most important thing for me is I have about three teams that I’m looking at - a team that obviously has a solid running game, has weapons on the outside, a defense that’s been playing well and playing well together and that’s ready to win right now," McNabb said.

The opening of the interview was very awkward (video below) as McNabb basically stared into the camera and tried to convince viewers that teams were interested in him. He didn't clarify whether he was looking for a starting or backup job, but he put the chances of his return at "80 to 90 percent."

On another note, McNabb was asked about Terrell Owens and specifically whether the Eagles would have ever reached the Super Bowl without the playmaking wide receiver.

"It’s tough to say. I think we would have," McNabb said. "We’d been there at the edge at the cuff for so many years. I think we were just kind of biting at the bit to get there. What we did was we brought T.O. in and that gave us that extra boost we needed to get there.

"I feel like we would have made it, yes. The fact that he did come over and help us and gave us that extra push that we needed on the offensive side, helped not only the offense, but helped the defense as well."

Of course, technically, the Eagles did get to the Super Bowl without T.O., considering Owens didn't play in the team's first two playoff games that year. But he obviously played a huge role in their 13-win season.

The question of what would have happened had McNabb and Owens played more years together is one of the great "what-ifs" in Philadelphia sports history. Earlier this offseason, during a radio interview, Brian Westbrook looked back on what could have been.

McNabb reached three NFC championship games before Owens and one after, but never again played in the Super Bowl.

He was asked to reflect on his time in Philadelphia and had positive things to say, but it's clear McNabb has been paying attention to the fact that the Eagles have not won a playoff game since he left.

"Obviously there are a lot of people in Philadelphia right now who would love to have that same success we had," McNabb said.

And finally, he was asked to identify the best player he ever played with. McNabb first said it was tough to pick just one, but eventually settled on Brian Dawkins.

"When you think of a great player who dominated the game at his position, when he was out on the field, everyone on the opposing side knew where he was lined up, I would say Brian Dawkins," he said.

If only McNabb had Vick's attitude. It's a shame we can't combine McNabb's intelligence with Vick's willingness to work on his game.

Reid wasted 10 years with McNabb now he is repeating the same mistake with Vick. If Reid would have had a real QB instead of punt returners at QB, he might have won a super bowl.

Thats too funny, McNabb a QB coach. Poor mechanics his entire career, never had a true grasp of the offense and could not learn a similar offense in Washington. Coaching positions go to the smart guys, McNabb is not in that club.

Philly fans, at least many of the online people who post, seem to have selective memory. Many of the people who post tend to look at a player's shortcomings more closely if the player's personality doesn't connect with the fans (Mike Schmidt struck out too much).

Many of the same people embrace clearly flawed players that are "Philly", or "passionate" (Iverson the undersized, ball-hogging defensive liability).

While many fans were raring to see McNabb leave, many of the same fans just about shed tears when Dawkins left. If you compare Dawkins and McNabb at this point purely as athletes, McNabb clearly has enough ability left to be a contributor on an NFL team. Dawkins, on the other hand can could do little more than coach at this point.

And although I loved Dawkins as a player, the quarterback is the single player most responsible for a team's success in the modern era. The facts are that the Philadelphia Eagles never had a sustained period of winning until McNabb arrived.

I think most fans focused too much on McNabb's personality or admittedly odd statements, or that he didn't bring the city a championship. McNabb has flaws and made mistakes like all players. He wasn't one of the guys on defense that couldn't cover Joe Jurevicius or stop the run game.

If you look strictly at his performance on the field, he's accomplished more than 80 - 85 percent of modern era quarterbacks, and Philly fans look unappreciative and uninformed by throwing so much disdain his way.

Philly and Baltimore are most likely his top 2 teams. Is just trying to decide whether he really wants to be a back up. 3rd team is most likely not really out there, he is just holding onto hope. Philly makes the most sense, as I would much rather have McNabb waiting in the wings, then Kafka or Edwards. Do it Andy. Do it Donny. Let's make one more run at the chip!!!

Reid had to play his QB cards the way they were dealt. McN was the correct pick in that draft, the rest did nothing at all or not as well as he did. Vick made Kolb expendible and if anything it was KOLB that was the wasted pick. So we'll ride Vick until the next option comes along. Not every team is as lucky as say, the Colts, where they stink bad enough to draft Pmanning, then stunk bad enough again years later and were able to draft Luck. If Brees or Brady were available now I'm sure Reid wouldn't object but they aren't. Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw.

i still appreciate all the wins he gave us as a qb like when he played with that broken ankle for a few snaps and what not. like you know when we got to the super bowl and all those nfc championship games. yeah sucks we never won the big one but i cant complain about mcflabb all in all if we had him as a back up id be happier with him than kafka and edwards... seriously.

@PhillyisHome--- Couldn't have said it any better. And it's quite funny how many commentators will turn out for a McNabb article of any kind and complain that the media is talking about him. Maybe the media trotts out his stories like this because they know people will read them.

I just have one question for all the commentators out there. All the Reid bashers, McNabb trashers, and Vick haters. What QB has the Eagles passed up on a chance to get who would have miraculously gotten us a Super Bowl? I mean seriously, like what Joe Schmo did Reid pass up? I know, it was KOLB!!!! I mean seriously, get over yourselves. If Reid would have had a real QB instead of punt returners at QB, he might have won a super bowl. Seriously
