Lito blasts the Eagles

POSTED: Saturday, May 16, 2009, 4:12 PM

Lito Sheppard is happy to be getting a new start with the New York Jets, but that hasn't stopped him from ripping his former team, the Eagles, in an interview with Bob Glauber of Newsday.

Sheppard said the Eagles purposely limited his playing time last season to send a message and to justify the signing of free agent Asante Samuel.

"After my second Pro Bowl season [in 2006], it started going downhill when I addressed the fact that I felt like I wanted a new deal," he said.

"I truly believe that if they paid me and they paid Asante at the same time, and if I had a pretty good year, then people would have asked, 'Then why would you bring in Asante?' They had to keep me at a minimum in terms of play time."

Sheppard's friend and ex-teammate, Sheldon Brown, has of course voiced his displeasure with his own contract this offseason.

And Lito expects his buddy to experience a similar cut in playing time.

"I talked to him and told him it's the same thing I was going through," Sheppard said. "I already know what the outcome is going to be.

"He ultimately won't even be playing before the end of the season. It's a known fact. I hope they prove me wrong."

I've heard this argument before, and frankly, I think it's ridiculous.

Can you really imagine Andy Reid or Jim Johnson playing an inferior player just to send a message about a guy's contract? What if it cost the team a game?

Their job is to win, and in my opinion, they make personnel decisions with that always being the primary focus.

Obviously, Sheppard feels differently.

"I wish the league would do something," he said. "[In my situation], you feel like you're doing everything right, perfect teammate, working hard, doing everything you're supposed to do, but it doesn't work out in the end. There should be some rules of guidelines. You shouldn't be able to devalue an employee like that."

Of course, Lito did not say that players should give money back if they don't play up to their contract.

"It's like injuries," he said. "You can't cut a guy when he's hurt, so how can you sit a guy without probable cause? Whenever a guy feels like he needs a new deal, if he addresses that, don't make it like, 'You don't tell us what to do. We have to show you who's boss.' That's dead wrong."

So what do you think? Does Lito have a point?

This is why sports fans love stories like Vince Papale. Guys like him who appreciate every second of being a pro. Living and acting appropriately. Making $ is fine - I respect that they want to earn. But if they trade you, move on. It won't add $ to your wallet to bad mouth former employers. It does not work outside of pro sports either. Smarten up, Lito and Sheldon. Cash your checks and be quiet.

Eagles management is shady. If the teams aren't beholden to a contract, than there is nothing wrong with players wanting to re-negotiate after they have out-played their current contract. Teams cut players who are scheduled to have pay raises all the time. No one talks about the teams that "signed a contract" with these players. Lito is another story all together. He had a few spectacular int returns and made the pro bowl, but he was not as consistant as we would have liked, or Sheldon was. Samuel is a better player. These two players are examples of Eagles players who see whats going on with mgmt from the inside and want to out. Lito wanted out of Philly long before this season, and I suspect Sheldon has wanted out for a while as well.

who cares ? this nation is going under, in 5 years hyperinflation will take over. then it will be state warfare over rights to water, land etc., when the feds can't hand out bailouts to states. get ready for change, and a world that has no more sports.

sorry Lito, but the truth is an NFL career is only a few years. The right to start must be based on merit and in your case Assante had merit on his side. The other truth is you were not there consistantly for the team and that matters. I thing the issues with Sheldon Brown will be resolved, but the truth is you have been given the chance to play a game you love and make enough money take care of you for life. the rest of us are outside with our noses pressed against the window. If you don't understand that then you will go through the rest of your life a bitter man. sheldon will move on and make the most of his life. I hope you do to.

I'd like to see the day when an athlete doesn't live up to his potential and asks to have his contracted renegotiated for a lesser amount. It's not going to happen - and it shouldn't happen for an athlete who does better than expected either.

lito you get hurt every time the wind blows, you quit on this team, no one cares what you have to say. i hope you play in alot of games next year so we get a good 2nd roudner, but after that i will hope every week you strain a hamstring..not that I have to hope for that

Well if Lito's theory held water, then an under-appreciated guy like him would have been in considerable demand throughout the league, playing a premium position as he does. Well, it doesn't seem like there was much of a demand so maybe he wasn't so mishandled by the Eagles as he claims. You can make his claims if you can back it up on the field. We'll see if he can.

Lito, I hope you have a Pro Bowl year because if you do the Eagles will get the Jets 2nd rounder instead of their 3rd rounder for you. Some players learn to play through injuries. Remember how many games you missed and then you were not effective and dogged it when you returned because the Eagles found a better player than you. Now you have coached Sheldon out of town too!

lito brought the signing of a new db on himself. for two years he missed games because of 'injuries'. that's understandable, missing games because of injuries but it's also good football business to find a player who will play. nothing personal lito, but samuels does play, you couldn't, remember?

These guys (Sheppard and Brown) make me sick. They had no problem cashing their signing bonus checks, but can't play out their contracts without starting trouble.

I haven't read all the comments, so this may have been said already. With the new CBA, give NFL players guaranteed contracts. Watch as there is no signing bonus. Watch as length of contracts decrease. Watch as yearly salary decreases. Watch as the players now complain about (probably) less overall money. With such an injury prone sport, guaranteed contracts will feel good for the players, but the teams will be more careful on big contracts. I say do it- then everyone can stop whining about how contracts are unfair and teams can cut a player or ask him to play for less money. No more playing with spreading cap money for signing bonuses over a span of years. Player whines for a new contract- sorry, sonny, you're on the practice squard for this year.

Lito: Thanks for all the fine years you gave us, and the way you took over when the veteran in front of you left for another team. But it's a shame you just don't understand that this is a BUSINESS! And if you had an employee that publicly bad-mouthed you in the newspapers, would you give him a raise.....especially if he was already signed to a contract???

How many games do he play in the 2 years prior to his return last season? Guy has no clue that it's a me now league. During those 2 years he was well enough to P/U a paycheck but not well to play. I don't know of any employer who would keep and pay an employee for as long as the EAGLES did with Lito. Then they want a new contract with more money for less work BS. You don't hear team saying I want to renegotiate a contract with a player who has not played but 2 years of a 4,5 or 6 year contract.

I'm tired of players believing they are owed something, whether it be money or playing time. The Birds made a business decision only. Lito needs to stop crying. The Birds did him a favor by trading him to a team he would start in a big market. Stop crying you little panzi!!

I think it's a half truth because Lito playing poorly when he was in shows that he was upset about the issue and he acted like a baby. He should of turned it up if anything to show how valuable he is.. not make it look like the eagles were right about the move. If he played better it would be more believable. There is no loyalty in the birds organization.

I totally disagree with Lito mostly because he's being incredibly one-sided. He still hasn't addressed the fact that he was injured all the time, and he gave up an excessive amount of yards after the catch during his tenure. Those are the reasons why the Eagles signed Asante in addition to the fact that he was available, the Eagles are always seeking to improve, and he's an overall better CB. It's amazing how he's taking for granted what the Eagles DID for his career. It just shows his selfishness. I shouldn't be surprised though - this is the same guy that was partying with T.O. after he was suspended by the Eagles. Good riddance.

"Can you really imagine Andy Reid or Jim Johnson playing an inferior player just to send a message about a guy's contract?" Yes I can imagine that. This is what happens when your head coach is also in charge of making personal decisions. Same thing happened with Buck last year. They didn't play him so they could keep his value down in hopes of resigning him at a low price in the off-season.

Phewwww! Sign a contract then wait until the years are up, if you are REAL good and play better than anyone thought you would them whomever you signed that contract with may decide to give you more than what is listed on that contract or they may even decide to gove you a new and better contract, but hey, that's entirely up to them, they have your contract and they expect you to live up to it for however long the terms are. There is no other story here, you sign a contract then you wait until it expires and hopefully you get a new one. Those of you who are unhappy with your contract, well, too bad huh, you shouldn't have signed it, but you did, now don't expect us to feal sorry for you (we don't), live with it or just leave, OK, seeya!!!

Lito's a very good corner, who totally dogged it last year and finally got his wish to get out of town. Unfortunate situation, but we got Samuel because he couldn't stay on the field. When he played, he played well (excluding last year), and I wish him well, but it just makes him look like bitter and unprofessional to counter against his former organization like this.

Lito knows the Eagles are going to win the Super Bowl without his poor performance last year. Sour grapes. I hope he makes the Pro Bowl for the Jets because the better he plays the Eagles can get the Jets 2nd round pick next. Worse case senario is the Jets 3rd rounder. Banner stated this in the Eagles Insider last issue. Go Lito, go get us a 2nd rounder.

It's an unwritten rule in the NFL that you play when you're hurt. I guess that's another reason they pay you the big money. And it is strongly suggested that you play well when hurt. Litto has NEVER caught on to this concept. He might want to learn this if he expects to say with the Jets. That's the big difference between Lito and Sheldon. The coaching staff is going to start the player with the best ability who can answer the bell every week.

Lito talks like a pro football player. You can't be a pro bowl defensive back if you think other guys are better than you. If somebody else says you're not as good, well, they must be wrong. I don't think this has anything to do with the Eagles as an organization. It's pretty standard across the league, really.

Mike I, you raise some interesting points...however, the way I understand it, what the owners can and can't do is collectively bargained and the players know the deal going in...all in all, Lito should be set for life with what the Eagles have already paid him to play a game. How many of us get paid millions to play a game we started playing for fun? Is coal mining fun? Being a policeman? Walking around 500 feet above the ground on the I-beam of a high rise building being constructed? Or how about a roofer in July? Lito, if there's just too much disrespecting going on here...I guess it's time to put that college degree of yours to work. (You do have your degree in economics, don't you?)

I have nothing to say about Lito, but in response to the question posed about whether the Eagles would play an inferior player to make a point: Yes. It happens over and over and over again within this franchise, and has for years.

Posted by RichieAllen64 10:21 AM, 05/17/2009 So many people would give their right arm to play in the NFL. Don't sign a contract if you can't live up to it. Except that Banner doesn't livev aup to the contrcts he signed. A few years go he took a $half million from Jon Runyan's existing contract for no other reason except that he could. The NFL cuts players all the time with signed contracts. If players have to honor their contracts, shouldn't the owners honor them as well? You contract with someone to redo your roof. Midway through he says he wants more $$. You say he has to honor his contract. Fine. Now, if he was halfway through, doing a good job, and you decide to you don't want him anymore, you are still under contract to pay him for the whole job. So why is the NFL the only league that can tear up legitimate contracts with its players?

Lito should be more concerned about getting his body in shape to play an entire season and EARN the $ Money $ HE signed to play for. No one made him sign the extension. He took the risk and knew he might be paid below market value (which I am not sure is the case anyway) when he signed that deal for finanacial security early on. With the other corners on the Jets roster (Donald Strickland, Tyron Brackenridge, Ahmad Carroll, Drew Coleman, Dwight Lowery & Darrelle Revis) does he think he's going to have more playing time there then he did in Philly? Even if he starts the season his history has shown he will go down at some point. The Jets will go 3-1 when he is out and they won't alter there line up since they are winning.

We will see how he plays. There is no way the Eagles would have buried him on the depth chart to devalue him. Lito played plenty in the beginning of the year and his playing time declined when it became obvious that either his head or body wasn't right.

Lito and Sheldon signed contracts. They should play them out. Period. They should blame their agents at the time, not the Eagles. True "representation" would have told them to sign a shorther deal and take their chances on the open market. Instead, the agent gets a nice commission, then tries to renegotiate for even more. Criminal.

Lito finally got his wish and got traded. Now he should just shut his mouth and prove by his play on the field that he is worth a big contract. My guess is that Lito will be looking for a job after one season with the Jets. He's not that good to be worth the big money. Never was. Other than the occasional big play, he got burned a lot.

Lito is a tool. They brought in Asante because Lito already got hurt a lot, and DBs who don't aren't really dedicated to taking care of themselves don't age well. Seems like a good move to me. When Lito was on the field last year, he didn't make too good a case for having been benched unjustly.

Sheppard is just another of those allegedly high-priced egotistical players who think they are better than they are. I do wish we had been able to keep Dawkins but Sheppard - yuk! Good bet, like so many others who overestimated their abilities, he'll be looking for a job soon. I am an Eagle fan (not a blind one) and I don't agree with everything I see (especially, at times, the play calling) but I believe deeply -if youdon't want to wear the uniform in a team concept - you can hit the bricks.

There's a way to be professional about wanting a new deal. It's called outperform your present one. Westbrook did, McNabb did back when they gave him his big deal. Lito doesn't even acknowledge the fact he missed numerous games in 2006,2007, and 2008. How you can say I deserve a new deal, I'm one of the best, when you miss 4 games here, 2 games there. That 8 million went in the bank when the market was great. If it was invested wisely in 2004 when he rec'd it it is way more than 8 mill now. Lito's way off base. Players get wronged with no guarantee one way contracts, but if you do your job and be professional the eagles have shown that they'll get the deal done (in their time frame) Unless your name is Dawkins and you have shown your willing to be abused.

stay healthy lito and play hard. thats what you signed a big contract to do. next contract dont take all the money up front and make sure you have extra bonuses for pro bowl appearances. (also, maybe get a new agent before you sign another contract.)

Sorry Lito but I can't feel your pain. I've been an excellent history teacher for 39 years and would do cartwheels if I made over 100 grand a year. Give me a million and I'll throw in a back flip or two. How could anyone feel sorry for a spoiled athlete making what you made over your career with the Eagles? You were once a good corner back but those times are gone.

I guess Lito doesn't realize the the reason the Eagles went out and got Samueal was because he sucked in 2007. They had to replace him. The only thinkg worse than a player complaining about his contract is an bad player complaining about his contract.

fact is, players are livestock and owners/GMs/coaches are the cowboys. management manages, players comply. it's that simple. lito, sheldon and others (plus their agents) signed those contracts with their eyes open and all the i's dotted/t's crossed. if they don't like it, they can always wait for free agency. and as for lito shooting his mouth off, he sure isn't helping his bud sheldon with the front office. better to stop running your mouth, lito, and focus on helping the Jets.

Gotta remember Troy and Bobby where better cover guys so it allowed Dawk to roam more, when they went with Lito & Sheldon they always had a prime Dawk over the top, with a aging Dawk it showed that they could't cover. So now they need better cover guys cause they don't have the safties to help over the top.

Ever since McNabb open his big mouth about getting a better players, more and more Philadelphia Eagles are leaving. What make McNabb think that he's a better player? The Eagles went to Superbowl twice and lost, while McNabb keeps making blunders and throwing up on the field. As long as McNabb is the quarterback, we may never see the Superbowl because I don't feel positive about this guy.

Lito is not half as good as he thinks he is. Lito, you are no Asante Samuel, you're not even sheldon brown. Lito wants the league to protect his starting position? How about you perform and you get to keep playing and get paid. No one will pay you for complaining. I suspect we have heard the last from Lito. He won't make another pro bowl. He doesn't have the talent to back up his attitude.

I have a feeling Lito and Sheldon are ticked off the Eagles redid Westy's contract. One problem guys- Westy was(is?) an elite in the league. Last year not so much, previous years every Sunday night NFL recap was national talking heads praising Westy. Not to mention the rediculous percentage of plays he was involved with. for dinrah- considering the pounding Westbrook gets as opposed to Lito, I'd say Lito. By the way, would that make McNabb a "Tostito"? (only thing I could think of that rhymed).

Lito was always hurt. Lito sulked and pouted literally from the day that the Eagles signed Samuel. Samuel, Brown and even Hanson completely outplayed Lito last season. Frankly, the emergence of Hanson is what sealed his fate. Once the coaching staff felt that Hanson was outperforming Lito, then they figured they didn't need Lito anymore, especially since he's not as good on the inside. He's not guaranteed a starting spot with the Jets and may not be the starter there once the season starts. That was his problem, he's one of these "entitlement" people that think things are just supposed to be handed to them.

Lito Sheppard has been a tremendous player for the Eagles once upon a time. For that chapter, I hope he knows that some of us (most of us, I'll wager, even though some of you have turned on him) appreciate the excellence that he brought to his position. Now is a different chapter, Lito plays for the Jets now. Once the season begins, unless they are playing against the Eagles next week, probably should think & speak only of his current team. Lito: thank you, and good luck with the rest of your career (exceptin' when you play the Eagles.)

All coaches are selfish, they want to win. If he was good enough to start, he would have been on the field more last year. He missed the fact that the Eagles didn't find him to be as good as he thinks. Prove them wrong or shut up. And don't sign the contract if it isn't any good.

Had AR and JJ continued to run that skater out there they would have been negligent in their jobs. He says he started asking for a renegotiation after the 06 season. Lito missed 4-5 games EVERY season from 05 through 07. Last season HE quit on the team and the team immediately started winning once AR stopped running him out there hoping that the football player in him would step up. I won't go so far as to call him scum...but his play and actions last season sure merit that title. I've lost all respect for him as a football player and anything that he has to say isn't worth a hill of beans.

From the reports I've heard, Lito is not going to start- he'll be their nickel back and did he get a new contract even? The key to this is you have to actually outplay your contract and Lito was always hurt and could not be counted on. Sheldon can be counted on but is not that good- Sheppard at least was a playmaker when healthy.

I'd like to know what Lito wants the league to do. It is up to the employer to decide what to do to its employees, as long as it is in accord with its labor agreement with the players. If he really has a beef, then when the next labor bargaining event happens, bring it up! I don't believe Lito or Sheldon understand why they are wrong in their situations. At the bottom line of both arguments is one word; GREED!

Don't blame the Eagles Lito.. they are just playing by the rules, and have been smart enough to figure out that as long as you throw big money at another team's free agent, you can treat the guys you drafted any way you want ( unless they're Brian Westbrook). You guys agreed to that CBA, all the Eagles do is play by it, if you want someone to blame try the late Gene Upshaw; if you guys haven't sanctified him. Maybe this Smith guy will represent your union instead of being the NFL's easy mark.

They really are out of touch with reality, I like that drog. These egotistical athletes have to understand that THEY S-I-G-N-E-D a contract. True, people in life get raises and promotions, but with sports it's different. While some get a couple hundred dollar raises A YEAR, these athletes are looking at millions in signing bonuses alone. Lito, Sheldon, McNabb, they have to realize that they haven't proved anything to ask for a new contract. Lito, you're gone, not our problem. Sheldon, provide more than incompleted passes and get some turnovers. Make the Pro Bowl! McNabb, well... I think we've talked enough about that.

I will keel over and die the first time I hear one of these millionaire punk athletes say they'd be willing to give back some of their signing bonus when they ask for a renegotiation. They have absolutely no sense of pride or ethics. A signature on a contract means something in this world, but if you're a punk athlete it is just a throwaway.

Lito is totally off base. His soft play at corner was his demise. If he spent more time staying with his guy instead of chasing him into the endzone, the Eagles wouldn't have been looking to upgrade. Lets face it, He was replaced by the best playmaker at cornerback in the NFL. The big plays that Lito made were poorly thrown balls that fell into his lap, although he was good at returning those balls for the occasional TD. Kudos to the front office again. They have always said if they could upgrade the team at any position, that they would make the move. As for Lito, just another spoiled athelete crying sour grapes and not respecting the fact that he was replaced by a better player.
