Defending McNabb; LT a fit for Eagles?
Rounding up some links: Would LaDainian Tomlinson be a good fit for the Eagles? And what do national media types think about the Birds' QB situation?
Defending McNabb; LT a fit for Eagles?
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
A few quick links to pass along:
* As you know by now, the Chargers have released LaDainian Tomlinson.
So the obvious question is: Where will he end up?
Tomlinson told SI.com's Jim Trotter he has a couple of requirements at this point in his career. He wants to be on a team that can contend, and a team that has a proven quarterback.
"I do know that I would have to go to a team that has a [proven] quarterback," Tomlinson said. "A place where you know you have a chance to win because of the quarterback."
Tomlinson did not mention specific teams, but Trotter listed the Eagles, Patriots and Packers in his report as teams that could potentially be fits.
Personally, I don't see how bringing Tomlinson aboard would make sense for the Birds. His yards per carry dipped to 3.3 last season, and he turns 31 in June. Have we heard anyone make the argument that he has anything left?
But if you wanted to make the case for such a move, it would have to involve them cutting Brian Westbrook and then bringing Tomlinson on board as a mentor for LeSean McCoy in a red-zone/backup role. He did score 12 touchdowns last season.
Again, I'm not really seeing it.
* Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com tells Eagles fans to relax. Donovan McNabb should be the QB in 2010:
McNabb deserves another year. Kolb can wait. And I think McNabb will get it, considering Reid has said as much twice already. Live with it, Eagles fans. Reid isn't going anywhere and McNabb will almost certainly be your quarterback next season. Is that really a bad thing? I can hear your responses from here: Eat #@&^X&, Prisco. That's why I love Eagles fans.
* Gwen Knapp of CBSSports.com would agree with Prisco, saying the Eagles would be foolish to deal McNabb:
The Eagles, however, have developed a near-fetish for shedding players as they head toward the periphery of their prime, and the patience-challenged Philadelphia fans don't know how good they have it with McNabb. They don't remember what it's like to dwell in quarterback purgatory, watching an Alex Smith, David Carr, Joey Harrington or JaMarcus Russell flounder for years. The Eagles already have the most important element of a successful team. They have a rock where at least a dozen clubs have a crater.
* Vic Carucci of NFL.com takes a look at how the Eagles' quarterback decisions could have a domino effect on the rest of the league:
It's hardly an exaggeration to say that how the Eagles address their Donovan McNabb/Kevin Kolb/Michael Vick quarterback glut is among the league's most anticipated decisions of the offseason. To what extent they do so is anyone's guess, but it's reasonable to assume that there will be movement of some kind. Such movement could quite possibly bring dramatic change to another team's fortunes while even affecting the competitive balance of one or more divisions.

LDT is not a fit here, plain and simple. Speaking of RB though, I would like to see us draft 1 this year, but not a guy like McClutcheon (sp?) who is a possible bust candidate, just like some of all the other *grunt* "little guys" that AR thinks he can *grunt* "get into space" for big plays but then fail miserably when trying to *grunt* "block a blitzer." I want a guy that can give us (don't laugh) the type of production Buckhalter could give us (admittedly, it was sporadic and only when he was healthy, but he had some good games and I liked his style more than his production). I like Shady and The Weave a lot, but a guy who can take the ball and hit the line at full speed with some oomph! 8-12 times a game @ 4 to maybe 5 ypc would be a nice addition to our offensive stable. Mr. Kapadia next time you write an article look at previous Eagles that were shed just prior to their decline. Offer an assessment of each move based on compensation and the player's post-Eagle performance. Beck

I like LT, it's just that RB is not one of our biggest holes right now. We need to concentrate our FAs and draft picks on safety, DE, LB, and O-line. The McNabb/Kolb/Vick argument wouldn't even matter if they're going to get pounded behind a soft O-line again next year. goeagles87
Come on Beck, we all know he's talking about Cunningham '98. Besides, it's Knapp who wrote that on his article, not Kapadia. goeagles87
LT is not a fit for the Eagles, don't bring him in, it'll just be a waste of money. Spend that f/a money somewhere else that will have a bigger impact, you can draft a RB to complement Shady/Bwest/the Weave...Bwest may be gone too. Focus the draft on defense, need immediate impact players. Pass rusher, somebody to play centerfield, strong side LB, they all need upgrades from current players. Need to be able to get some pressure for McDermott's defense... Bleue
hmmmm a nfl back on the decline at age 31, no thanks we already have one of those. Besides Bwest is much younger in football years, he saves himself because he doesn't practice, getting the extra yard is not smart and he has only played in a handful of games over the last few years tsump- One thing we wouldn't have to worry about with LT is no concussions! If we unload B-West, bring in LT. But forget what all of those no-nothings in the media say. Get McSlab's overweight arse outta here and get that safety Eric Berry or that defensive monster named Suh.
It is uncanny how RBs hit the wall at 30, almost without fail. allen_jones
I'm not seeing it either, becuase we don't have a proven QB or "a chance to win becuase of the QB". I would assume he's talking about winning the Superbowl and not 10 games during the regular season. Voytas

Chester Taylor won't sign anywhere to be a back up. He's going to be looking for an opportunity to start much like Derrick Ward last year for Tampa. BammBamm
