Last night, I pointed out that NFL Network's Steve Wyche was reporting that the Falcons would make a push for tight end L.J. Smith.

Today, Joe Fortenbaugh of the National Football Post says he's hearing a deal could be coming in hours.

It had been assumed that Smith wouldn't be back with the Birds after they slapped him with the franchise tag last year and he underperformed (37 catches, 298 yards, three touchdowns).

The Eagles drafted Smith in the second round of the 2003 draft.

Some other free-agent news that has caught my eye:

** The Redskins made the day's biggest splash with a $100M deal to Albert Haynesworth, but it sounds like not much more is coming. 'Skins VP of football operations Vinny Cerrato told ESPN the team is running out of money and has to be selective with what it does from here on out. The team will release cornerback Shawn Springs, according to washingtonpost.com.

** The Giants have been fairly quiet. They are hosting defensive tackle Rocky Bernard and linebacker Michael Boley, according to The Newark Star-Ledger.

** The Cowboys have been pretty quiet also, although Ray Lewis hasn't landed anywhere yet. A league source told ESPN.com's Matt Mosley yesterday that the Cowboys did not appear to be seriously considering Lewis. NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that sources close to Lewis say he will not return to Baltimore. Schefter also reports that the Jets are expected to sign Lewis' teammate, linebacker Bart Scott, to a $40M deal.

** We are moving at a frantic pace here at MTC, but hoping to keep it up. Keep checking back.

Good riddance, LJ. Why oh why did we ever take you over Witten? LJ Smith, you will officially go down in Eagles history as "The 2003 Draft Mistake"

Come to think of it, that 2003 draft was horrid for us in those first two rounds. Jerome McDougle followed by LJ Smith. *shudders*

I would tell LJ not to let the door hit him in the you-know-what on the way out, but even if it did, he'd probably turn around, try to catch it, and drop it. Good freakin' riddance.

Maybe if Atlanta signs LJ we can give them Greg Lewis as a "thank you" gift?

Whether we sign Dawkins or not, the Eagles should consider signing Derrick Brooks to its linebacking corps - for all the right reasons: knowledge, ability, leadership (on and off the field), championship ring, first ballot Hall of Famer, etc...Considering our huge rivalry with Tampa Bay, Philly is the PERFECT place for D. Brooks to finish his career and spoil some games for his old team... PK

Smith lacked consistency. Shame too because he looked like he was going to be as good if not better then Chad Lewis

Too bad about L.J. Smith. Remember how good he looked coming out of college? Makes you wonder what ingredient for success in the NFL he lacked. But boy, whatever it was, he sure did lack it.

What I wouldn't give to be there when LJ and Considine are working out for other teams and showing them "highlight" film. "Well see here I was out of position because, err, that TE was just faster than me". "Well see here I dropped that pass because the sun was in my eyes".

Y'all be hatin on LJ is a mistake. The eagles will be worse next year without my man Runyon, a locker room leader. They will miss the playoffs after the good ship Randy Reid continues to take on water. Andrews at RT, there goes the weak side trap. C'mon, get real.

Oh No! What are we going to do without our franchise Tight End? Bishhhhhh. See ya L.J. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
